why are you using the 223 cuck round instead of the 308? Not like you can do full auto
Controllable successive shots on target

Though i guess you could probably preform almost as well with lots of practice.

This. Plus you don't have to sell one of your kidneys to pay for plinking ammo.
I would much rather have a .308 because I can hunt pretty much anything with it.
I'd buy an ar if I had more disposable income but I need a hunting rifle bad.

Is the price increase from .223 to .308 on an expensive-ish hobby really that untenable?

50cpr for cheap brass ammo
Less for steel

The only problem with .308 as a hunting caliber is that it tends to leave huge holes in deer and anything smaller (rendering more meat inedible.)
You could easily use an AR for hogs and varmints though, but even with an intermediate caliber like .223 you'd really need to hit the vitals for deer.
I mean it's a fudd caliber but .30-06 is still one of the most versatile calibers to date for hunting game with a good selection of basic bitch scoped rifles to purchase. If you wanted a lever-action you could compromise with a .30-30 but you're losing out on punch and effective range.

I feel .308 is probably the better round if you could only have one, but 5.56 still offers:
>superior controllability for follow-up shots
>lighter weight, both with regards to weapons and ammo
>it's cheaper, so you can train more
>when you're teaching a new shooter (like, say, a girlfriend), 5.56 is generally just less imposing to shoot. It's a fantastic first centerfire cartridge, though PCC's are arguably better.
If I could only have a single rifle, I'd honestly want a .308, probably an FAL, actually. But both 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 have their place, even disregarding automatic fire.

I'd use 7.5 swiss exclusively if I could
>>32616600
.223 is 60% of the price of .308 so yes, .223 is much more affordable to those of us who actually use our guns regularly.

I would too, if availability wasn't an issue. Maybe if I ever manage to move to Switzerland...
