Does /k/ like leverguns?
>>
>>32614205
Gimmickguns are cool but I wouldn't buy one. Pistol caliber in a rifle sounds really meh to me.
>>
>>32614473
Fuck, now I want a pistol in .30-30
>>
>>32614205
Yes.

>>32614473
You're objectively retarded. .357mag and .44mag become seriously harder hitting out of rifle barrels.

>>
>>32614205
Is the 30-30 with those leverevolution rounds a decent primary rifle? Also why isnt there a leverevolution ripoff from every manufacture? I doubt that a piece of plastic in the hollow point is patent worthy when that has been done for years.
>>
>>32614205
Of course. I have a Savage 99 that's been passed down since my great-grandfather. At some point I want a Winchester 1895 which is another lever action that can readily use spitzer bullets.
>>
>>32614649
Why isn't the 1895 being made? If rossie of some other levergun maker would start making them, I think they would be a hit!

Did you know the cylinder on a BFR is long enough to fit military surplus 7.62x54R? I dropped one into my .45-70 BFR to see if it would fit. No clearance issues whatsoever. I am always on the lookout for a cheap .30-30 BFR that I can have converted to 7.62x54R.
>>
>>32614804
I think most people prefer lever actions to be in more traditional calibers like 30-30 or some other straight wall cartridge. 1895 chamberings, like 30-06 or 30-40 krag, are cheaper and more popular in bolt actions, so the demand for the 1895 just isn't there.
>>
>>32614897
I think left handed people would enjoy them. Personally, I would love an 1895 in .308. It would be a raifu that could go anywhere and do anything. A .243 or .223 levergun would be great for poping a pack of coyotes in more anti gun States and/or dingos or kangaroos in Australia.
>>
>>32614543
I'm sure they do, but it's retarded to not use spitzer bullets when you have the choice. Hard hitting and pointy is better.

Pretty nice. Mine is in 358 winchester.
>>
>>32615091
unless you want/need to clear brush. Then pointy is a drawback - they'll deflect and fuck you're accuracy more than rounded and flats

I like them. Good shoulder thumping fun that puts a shit eating grin on my face. Always nice to hear the 10" plates go TWWWAAAAAANNNNNNGGGGGGGG for eternity and fly 10', instead of just getting knocked over.
>>
>>32614205
nah, i can't stand those sexy beasts
>>
>>32615799
I've seen you around in the levergun threads, and I've been meaning to ask you: What's it like operating that gun with thick gloves on?
I'm about one correct answer and a grueling long and hard fishing season culminating in a fat paycheck away from ordering it.
Also, do you handload, or are there any factory loads for it that aren't entirely anemic?
>>
>>32615932
I honestly haven't used it with thick gloves so I just went and tried it with the biggest winter gloves I could find. The only slight issue was the trigger finger tip might get caught going in if it's an oversized long glove like the one I was using, but otherwise it worked good. I usually use outdoor research's Alibi II gloves (ice climbing so they're warm but also keeps some of your dexterity).

I've got factory HSM Cowboy ammo that I'm still burning through. It's fairly soft loaded 405gr cast lead and I got it for the starline brass. If you really want to push some heavy hot ammo through it like I'm going to, get some copper gas checked cast bullets, or some thick jacketed bullets. 405gr going 2000ft/s+ will fuck shit up.
>>
>>32616089
That was exactly the answer I was hoping for, thank you so much for the answer.
Re: ammo, I'm not exactly out for elephant hunting loads, but due to hunting regulations here, I'd need something that hits hard enough at 100 meters. Of the limited selection I have here, that seems to just be Hornady Leverevolution 325 gr or Federal Fusion 300 gr., but it'd be fun to brew up something that didn't cost an arm and a leg for a box and still could kill things dead. Maybe even a little extra dead.

>>32615091 sounds like you don't know a thing about leverguns
>>
>>32614205

Love them. They're a lot of fun to fire.
>>
>>32614648
What are you using the rifle for??
>>
>>32614473
you can get them in rifle calibers, too, anon
>>
>>32614648
That's exactly what I have. It shoots pretty well with the leverevolution and I think that there's a noticeable power increase
>>
>>32615091
If you would like to get spitzer performance, you could try the aforementioned Lever Evolution ammo, or you could pick up a gun that can load spitzers, like the aforementioned Winchester 1895 or the more recent Browning BLR.
>>
>>32615091
The only gun model I know that can take spitzer rounds naturally is the Savage 340 and that's only because it has a bolt action .30-30 variant with a removable mag.

Otherwise like >>32616441 noted you'd need the polymer tipped ones for a tube magazine.
>>
>>32614986
>1895

I'd like them more if they didn't have a retarded magazine. Henry and Browning have mag fed leverguns that are much more practical. As for cost, I can't imagine an 1895 costing more than an 1886 when they're basically the same fucking rifle.
>>
>>32616602
>what is savage model 99?
>>
>>32616946
Ah, I've never seen one of those. Really fascinating.

45-70 compare.jpg
43KB, 500x399px
I really want a .45-70 govt. brush gun, but at $1/round, I think I'll wait until I have a reloading set-up to shave some of that off.
>>
>>32616347
No problem, glad to help. The .45-70 will do more than fine at 100 yards. The aperture sight on the 1895SBL is quite large but I can still hit quite accurately with it. I shit you not I hit a (big) gong at 400 yards standing, offhand, with the peep sights...after maybe 12 shots.

I think a lot of people use the 405gr even at 1400 ft/s for hunting large game (elk/moose/bear); you don't need extreme speed for them to be very effective.
>>
>>32614648
The bullet itself is nice, but it's really the powder blends Hornady uses that makes it better. You can buy leverevolution powder, but it's not tailored to the cartridges, more of a catch all
>>
>>32615091
Spitzers are great for extended ranges, which the vast majority of lever guns aren't used for anyway for various reasons. Oh and outside of shimming cartridges to perfectly line up in a mag tube, then dropping the rifle off the 3rd floor, you CAN use Spitzers in lever guns because primers aren't made of potato chips and and straight walled Spitzers rounds are available in approximately fuck lever guns anyway
>>
>>32616441
>>32616549
>>32616602
>>32617331
You misunderstand me. That was an argument against lever guns in general, because they're not very spitzer friendly. Bolt > lever, and non spitzer rounds can go the fuck home to 1894
>>
>>32618198
But the 1895, 99 and a few others are built for spitzers.
>>
>>32616458
General do it all gun. Everything from hunting to HD to shtf, but mostly just shits and giggles.
>>
>>32617331
Given many people hunt from tree stands it is a somewhat valid concern.

Weird thing is that Peterson figured out the solution a couple decades ago but no one bothered adapting it
>>
>>32618992
It came at a time when bolt actions were the hot new thing and magazines eliminated the problem without things like the weird lebel cartridges

Now people have polymer tipped bullets, most people use it for 100-200 range anyway and authenticity to original designs are more valued so companies have no real motivation to bother stamping a part like that out.

Might be an aftermarket for it for home reloaders.
