To everyone decrying the lack of innovation in firearms:
What could a gun possibly do that represents a meaningful improvement over extant guns?

Nothing "new" is coming out because firearms have hit a dead end (or rather, a logical conclusion). Cheap, reliable, lightweight, modular guns are widely available. If full auto was legal and there was market for it, we would likely see more recoil mitigation innovation in the way we've seen innovation in suppressors due to the relative decrease in price of the tax stamp.

I appreciate kel tec trying, at least, but it seems the only thing left to do is to apply existing tech to new areas, or further integration of electronics and guns. I wonder if you could make a gun with a laser thermometer that would prevent the user from firing unless it was pointed at a living being. It could help reduce police collateral damage. Just point and sweep.

Baseless or semicased ammo.

Magazines that hold more rounds in the same size (more efficient follower or springs)

sling by nature includes oiler.

I really love the little things, but 5.56 is a much better cartridge and they're so close in weight to AR15 carbines its just silly to think they're more practical, even if I might want to.

I have been hiking with both an m1 carbine and an ar on seperate occasions. Both with irons, both times with near identical gear and camping stuff. The weight difference is noticible. But to bring back 30 carbine for an even lighter pack rifle would be awesome.
