Technically that makes sense but .30 carbine doesn't really seem like an intermediate cartridge. It's more like .357 out of a rifle. The French had some 1907 winchesters they made full auto in ww1, and .351 is pretty similar to .30 carbine so are those assault rifles too?

An Asault Rifle has to have a cartridge with an effective range out to at least 400 m. The .30 Carbine cartridge's effective range is only out to 200 m.

I would say the M1 carbine is a PDW and is the grandfather to weapons like the P90 and H&K MP7. The cartridge it fires straddles the line between pistol and intermediate rifle round much like those aforementioned weapons. It was much more compact than anything else of the era, much like how modern PDWs are super compact and of course the whole concept behind the M1 carbine was to arm non combat personnel with something more effective than a handgun but much more convenient to carry than a full size infantry rifle. Which is also the premise for modern PDWs and was exactly how FN marketed the P90.

It is more handy than the heavy m1 Garand though and it's not as powerful as an actual assault rifle.

Which sounds nice, but all pistols and pistol calibers are a dice roll when it comes to lethality. You can ask any paramedic and they will all have stories along the lines of a guy taking a whole mag out of a 1911 to the back and living while some fat dude takes one .22 up the armpit and died on the scene.

But you've got 20 shots with a Carbie so it makes up for it a bit.
