Noice.
I wanna get a 44 Mag lever cat for when I go up to New south for pigs. Reckon its a good buy? I've got a ruger scout in 308 already as a back up

This is an exit wound from a .308. It kills a lot of pigs.
I would recommend you stick with your Ruger Scout. 10 round mag would be perfect.
Most important thing is to get a good scope with minimal zoom and good target acquisition.
44 mag is a good round. My mate has it as a Revolver Rifle (Rossi Circuit Judge) but it would be good as a lever action. 30-30 is also good.
Pic related: .308 exit wound to the chest cavity, running shot at 3x magnification.

With lever actions you tend to blat off a lot of rounds and miss. Whereas with a bolt action, you tend to take your time.
Pic related is a good scope. 1.5 to 3x magnification is all you need. Target acquisition is the most important part and you must always be on the ready for pigs.

This book is required reading since you own a Ruger Scout. Jeff Cooper invented the Scout pattern rifle.

Can you eat them or is it not advised?

If they're anything like the pigs in the states I'd assume the smaller ones taste better and you have to check for tics then cut em open and look for maggots and such. If it's clean it's safe to eat.

you really need to have a vet check a sample to rule out worms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinosis

I personally don't eat them. I don't eat roo either, since they have so many worms in them. I guess it would be okay to feed your dogs though if you boil the meat.

Said in the article if it's cooked well enough there's no risk. But thanks for the heads up. I usually try to be wary of the stomach contents, if there's anything meat looking I toss it. This most recent one last year had been living in an orchard and was therefore tasty.
