I like the look of polished guns and have an unpolished Ruger GP100. Should I attempt to polish the gun, or would that be a bad idea for some reason? I already looked into how much it would cost to have it professionally polished if I were unable to finish the job, and that would be $400 or so. Is it worth trying?

what you posted is a 'brushed'/matte finish. Polished is like a mirror, or chrome rims.
Seeing as you couldn't even tell the difference - recommend you stay away from the cloth wheel and rouge.

What I posted was a picture of my GP100 in its current state. I know what a polished finish looks like. Picture related.

>Picture related.
that shit looks disgusting.....

It's a lot better than the matte finish that CZ offers.

I polished my GP100 with some rags and a tube of Flitz/ Mother's Mag. Looks great man. Sorry, no pictures from the office. Go for it. I would do a little polishing every time I was watching a movie with the lady and it helps to pass the time. Same with priming cases...

If there's any chance that you could post a picture or two after you're home from work, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I will do that. If your thread dies then start an other.

Thanks

You didn't use any sandpaper or anything, right?

I've done it with a matte finish stainless Smith 5906.
Just use mother's mag and a soft cloth, watch TV and space out for a while. Don't overdo it on sharp edges or you'll start to round them over.

No, just flitz and some old shirts. I have also used Mother's Mag and that seemed to finish it up because it is less abrasive. Not the best pics, but here you are.

Here is the last one... Home from work. I would suggest taking everything apart and doing piece by piece. Little goals are nice.

I've thought about polishing my mat stainless 1911, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Thanks for the pictures. Any idea how long it took you to get your gun to such a nice finish?

It's mirror, but the buffing marks from the factory are still there in the right light. I am okay with this. All in all, about two weeks puddling away every night. It's so hard to tell because I multitask everything when idle. Just take your time and stop at the end of a session to gauge your progress. I could have gone more, but again, I was happy with the finish. It's a utility gun anyway.
