I'm looking to hunt with a standard AR-15, not an AR-10. What caliber should I choose to get around the same power as .308? I'll be hunting white-tail deer mostly, but I'd love to hunt something bigger given the chance.

I'm not interested in hearing about "shot placement" bs. I want to be sure, so I don't cause the animal more harm than I have to.

pic related, what I want to build eventually

Any 5.56 soft tip will drop Bambi.
>>
>>32594809
you google the laws of the area you want to hunt in and check what calibers are legal
>>
>>32594833

This. There's quite a few states where .223 is legally too small of a caliber for legal deer hunting.

Luckily they make all kinds of uppers in bigger stuff.

>>32594833
.223 is legal in my state, but I >>32594829 don't feel confident in such a small cartridge. I want something around .308, and I'm dead certain about that.
>>
>>32594833
>>32594829
both of these if .223/556 is legal for deer in your area use that. an ar in most other calibers is a huge price jump
>What caliber should I choose to get around the same power as .308?
not rely gonna happen
>>
>>32594809
.300 meme-out

>muh 30-30 ballistics
>>
>>32594873
this weekend a person I know shot a deer with a 223. the deer ran away. they couldnt successfully track the deer. so right now, there is a deer slowly dying from an infected wound.

just use a 308 and kill the animal right. I dont want to slowly die and neither does the deer. do it right.
>>
>>32594920
thats because it was a miss
>>
>>32594920
Then that person can't aim for shit or was using FMJ like a tard.
>>
>>32594932
I wasnt there. maybe a miss maybe a shitty hit. I dont know.

.308 power's a tall order, and maybe not necessary. .300 Blackout is very common, uses the same bolt and the same magazine. It runs best on a pistol length gas system, and you don't want a barrel longer than 16" (it just loses performance past 16).

If you want the wood aesthetic, there's a thing called a national match float tube that allows you to free float the barrel and use standard handguards.
>>
>>32594809

I'd say .300 blackout.
>>
>>32594809
Your best option, regardless, would be an AR-10. Short of that, .300 AAC would be similar in power to .30-30 (perfectly serviceable). An upper in 7.62x39 will do much the same but far cheaper ammo. You might also consider 6.8 SPC, .458 SOCOM, or .50 Beowulf. These five options (in addition to 5.56) make up the most common cartridges for an AR-15 and all should have soft-points available for hunting.
>>
>>32594809
My god that's the shittiest looking rifle in existence
OP if you build that, I would sincerely hope that you use only one round for it. On yourself.
>>
>>32594952
That'll fit standard A1 handguards? I thought A1 was impossible to free-float, and I'm glad you told me about it.

>>32594906
>>32594991
I will be building it, not buying it. Cost is not a concern - it's a gift for someone precious to me.

>>32594908
>>32594991
.300 AAC is the current idea, and what I'll chamber it in if something better doesn't come up. 6.8/.458/.50 seems hard to get around here, but 6.5 Grendel is often in stock. How would that perform?
>>
>>32595031
6.5 is excellent for deer. Shoots pretty flat, hits pretty hard, penetrates pretty deep. Arguably the best overall caliber for the AR.

That said, 6.8/.300/.458/.45/.50/WSSM's are also very usable, just harder to find. Hell, I haven't so much as seen as WSSM anywhere I've bothered to look.

please dont gift someone a frankengun as a gift. thats a really shitty choice. if they want mods let them pick their own.

Saw some guy at Nugget Fest (not one of us) Drop a white tail buck with .223/556 in one shot, he had bad placement and hit it in the ass, still dropped it, rifle is fine
>>
>>32594809
I hunted wild boar with my AR and even though I hit it in the vitals it kept going. I eventually killed it but I wouldn't hunt anything but small predators with my AR again.
>>
>>32595237
Thank you. I'm gonna price it out, check around and see some stats, make sure it's all kosher before I go buying parts.

>>32595262
I've gone over it with them, and this is definitely what they want. The leeway they gave me was "Something around .308 caliber in power". I know they love the A1, and they specifically showed me pic related once and said "That's really fucking cool"
>>
Maybe .338 Lapua. If tou can get an AR chambered in that round.
