Let's talk about Helm's Deep again. How would a force of 1,000 well trained soldiers defend the keep from a force of 10,000 Uruk-hai (super orcs)?
The Uruk's are utilizing archaic weaponry and seize equipement. The human defenders have modern weapons, but no vehicles and a "cap" at 60mm mortars.
We've had this thread before of course, but it's been awhile.
>seize
Seige
Napalm.
Lots and lots of napalm.
>>32578962
Any .308 rifle.
Each person shoots 10 times before they get in crossbow range.
Besides there were a lot more men of Dunland with the Uruks IIRC.
This topic is more interesting when it's 12-24 modern guys with space limitation on the equipment they can bring and time limitation on how long they can train the Rohan defenders.
1,000 MG42-s and a literal shitton of ammunition.
>>32578962
>modern weapons
They would be obliterated within less than three hours.
They would be pounded with mortars until they where within small arms range.
They wouldn't be able to suppress anyone on the wall. They couldn't bring siege ladders in to scale the walls. They wouldn't be able to get the ram up the gate. Any use of Catapults/trebuchet would be met with counter artillery rather quickly. They'd have no siege capabilties and would quickly route. Even if they managed to breach the walls/gate. They'd be funneled into a single area. The Uruks might be able to breach the lower sections of the wall where the camp was. But they would make no headway in the tight passage ways of the keep.
Even if the defenders where equipped with 500 bolt actions / 100 SMGS (Like grease guns) 10 machine guns and the rest with pistols and some grenades. They'd be able to just bring fucking havoc down on any besiegers. They could out range them in every single way, and that isn't good for a siege.

>12-24 guys with space/weight limit
Yeah that does sound better. I'll make that thread later today/tonight.
>>32579030
You're right senpai, I'll post a more interesting scenario later.
>>32579030
Even without mortars.
>Up the ramp with a battering ram/Testudo formation.
>Higher calibers pierce shields/armor. Open sides.
>Gunned down within minutes.
>Crossbowmen/Archers.
>Can be out-ranged by bolt actions.
>Catapults/Trebuchets.
>Can be out-ranged by bolt actions.
>Uruks have to scale wall on ladders.
>Grenades over the wall.
>Gun down anyone who is climbing up with a quick burst.
No headway could be made.
>>32579062
Lets take out the camp on the side and focus on the keep. Look at how dense that is. You've got two ways up, both are tightly packed areas. Lets go with what this anon said.
>>32579010
We've got 24 modern day Special Forces that are equipped with M4s, maybe one or two machine guns and of course some light AT weapons and grenades. For an added bonus, we can all say they have sidearms as well.
Them and 500 Rohan Defenders, who of course have no knowledge of modern day weaponry or tactics.
>>32579117
Should the Rohan soldiers be taught to use the sidearms? Or should the SF guys utilize their bows during the defense?
WP mortars, napalm, M134 predators, and claymores on wall entry points. The minigun can cut their siege engines and giant elephants clear in half from outside of engagement range, mortars will burn most of the army in formations alive, napalm can be shot over the walls and will provide a sustained burn to keep attackers at range, and the claymores are just for funsies when one of them actually makes it up the ladders.
These orcsies are wearing iron, leather, and carrying basic shields. Their engines are wood lined in iron plate. In WWI we demonstrated pretty soundly that a maxim will chew through that shit by the thousands in an hour.
>>32578962
A line of M2s alone would cut them to fucking pieces. Mortar the shit out of their breaching weapons before they are even in range and they are done.
you don't even need "modern" weaponry. WW1 mortars, rifles, and vickers will be enough.

how would 50 dudes with modern weaponry kill 10.000 uruks?
>>32578962
Grenades. Lots and lots of grenades. Just keep dropping them off the wall.
>>32578962
Polka music.
really obnoxious and loud Polka music played through a modern rock concert sounds system.
they would be so confused they'd literally fall to the ground pissing themselves before running all the way back to the saruman
>>32578962
Vickers/Maxim guns, lots and lots of them, and 60mm morter creeping barrage
Use Dis
>>32578962
Ma deuce will fuck up any uruk. I dunno how tough they're supposed to be but I imagine an M240 would do the same.
>"cap" at 60mm mortars
60mm HE bursting near the surface would wipe out scores of uruks per round.
Pretty much any area weapon would be extremely effective against the dense ranks of uruks.
>>32579749
>Not using WP to burn uruks by the thousands >Not then using catapults to send then psyops flyers saying saruman is a bitch and you they should join you, the actual most powerful wizard, mortar the white
>>32579947
I cant greentext for shit
NOT OP BUT NEW SCENARIO
One Ranger Platoon from WWII, armed with standard loadout(Garand/BAR/Springfield), let's say 30 of them. Mixed with 100 Rohan defenders.
Time to set up/train: 8 hours
>>32579947
>Not using WP to burn uruks
I was hedging my bets. Uruks are supposed to be superhuman in toughness and capable of battle rage. I figure dismemberment with a .50 cal or mortar bomb is a surer kill than incendiaries.
also
>implying uruks can read
Why not just two vickers MGs with a shitton of ammo?

numbers are too small for standard defense of a siege. thankfully numbers are also too small to be easily noticed. it's also a very good thing Helm's deep is located in a box canyon with a minimum of entrances.
set explosives into the ramps leading into the canyon. the intent is to shut that access path at a designated time (usually by manual detonator as was standard in ww2). while this is being done have one of the engineers identify that damn weak spot of an aqueduct and fill it (we have explosives, we know it's possible). the inner courtyard gets mined and the riders are warned what areas to not step.
[quick follow up: the bridge gets charged with explosives as well.]
when it comes time for the fighting, the riders are staged inside the fortress with orders to be willing to pull back. the rangers get positioned above the fortress itself (well out of reach of arrow fire, well within reach of their own guns); obviously concealed. The Uruk-kai move in unmolested and eager for what should appear to be a literal slaughter. the first half of the battle should be fairly quick. Uruk-kai charge in with their siege weapons and proceed to make a relatively unopposed assault. there are simply too few riders to put up a decent defense. they should quickly retreat into the main keep.
the second half begins with the first detonation of one of the mines. the riders obviously knew where they were, the Uruk-kai not so much. with that first detonation, the charges in the canyon ramps should also be detonated, thus cutting off the Uruk-kai's normal escape routes. with this the rangers open up with death from above. the initial targets should be those within the outer courtyards so as to push them into the mines or out of the keep. the ones inside the inner courtyards will be fighting to get out while the ones in the outer courtyards will be doing the best they can to find cover (not happening).
continued.

>>32580155
after the initial clearing of the keep it becomes a waiting game with dawn being the deciding factor. the Uruk-kai likely think they face a sorcerer of immense power and the defenders know they really only need to wait till the arrival of gandalf. anything attempting to enter the keep should be shot, as well as any command units that can be identified. thankfully those tend to act like bullies in the Uruk-kai army and are thus relatively easy to identify after they send a squad in.
if the Uruk-kai get bold and attempt to charge en mass, then you blow the bridge thus forcing them to come up with a new way in while still being shot at.
Failing that there's still the mines and the five hundred riders inside the keep who most likely think they're being defended by gods.

Went on a dungeon run once as a member of a LRRP team transported to the 20th level of a dungeon. Was much fun. Made it to the 12 level. Was in 1977. Yeah, Gramps.
