I don't see people shitting on .22, it's a fun round for plinking and makes for a great survival weapon. They just aren't well suited to combat or defense roles, that's not the same as being shitty. And yes, a .22 can definitely kill you, but so can a butter knife. That doesn't put it on the same level as a broadsword.

It's a not self-defense cartridge. Sure an excellent or (more likely) lucky shot would be lethal, but its energy/x-section are so modest that you wouldn't want to bet your life on it if you had other options.

But that's okay, it was never intended as a man-stopper. It's a small game/plinking cartridge and its very good at that. It's also extremely cheap compared to centre-fire cartridges and that allows a shooter to get the practice he/she needs to be effective with more powerful rounds. Actually in that light, it is the most deadly cartridge even made, because it turns novices into marksmen.

Take the force or speed into factor too - .45ACP is a big round compared to .22; but it's also slower in all things considered equal. Ever shoot a .17 HMR? Tiny round but it fucking SPEEDS

It's a rimfire rifle round. Out of a rifle it's an excellent round. Out of a 3.5" barrel it's weaker than a .25acp but predictably unreliable. Hollow points in .22 are designed to expand at speeds of over 1200fps and from a pistol they only get up to around 800fps, so they are basically fmj's at that speed and overpenetrate.

Back when I could get 500 rounds for $10, it was alright. Shoot all day and never break the bank. I never got much personal enjoyment out of it.
But for 6-8 cents around for the shit stuff, I'll pass. I get much more enjoyment shooting cheap x39 and 223.

Pistol calibers 38/9-45 all have the relatively same wound cavitation qualities. Also, most gunshots do NOT end in death. What causes death is arterial hits that can't get to an ER (clamped in time).
