This is an overview of the Czech war plans for WW3 circa 1964. Fun bits:
>total conviction that NATO had offensive designs on the Pact nations
>war plan operates on the assumption that there will be a nuclear exchange at the very beginning--there is no discussion of a war with no nuclear weapons, and all of their exercises featured nukes by 72 hours at the latest
>request for enough hospital beds for something like a quarter of their military--no mention of expected deaths
I know there's a Polish war plan as well somewhere on the net.

I was amazed when I read about Able Archer 83, and find out that Soviets actually believe that NATO will attack them.
So all this military budgets was wasted for nothing.
Cold War was weird time, for sure.

>Soviets actually believe that NATO will attack them.
Trauma from world war 2 made them think like that. Most of them lived during it and saw all the horror.

I have a friend from Belarus. He says that most of the Soviet military in his father's region was not placed on alert. Yet again he was Motorized troops so I dunno about formation alert categories.

The only time they ever did get placed on super high alert was Reagan's "we begin bombing in 5 minutes".

FUG was a Hungarian-designed vehicle used pretty widely by the Warsaw Pact

Along with a number of Czech weapons it was one of the few non-Soviet made weapons permitted by Moscow

After the 1956 revolution in Hungary the new regime under Janos Kadar sought to keep the population satisfied and begged the Soviets to allow for the production of domestic vehicles to create jobs. After the instability of 1956 the Soviets approved as they considered it a national security issue

Normally the Soviets forbid any sort of serious domestic weapons development to Warsaw Pact states save Czechoslovakia who was able to begin its own arms industry 1945-1948 before the Soviets could put down restrictions.

Soviet air defense troops in Egypt. The Soviets sent nearly 50,000 troops and advisers to Egypt & Syria to try and help the Arabs against Israel in the 1967-1970 War of Attrition where they performed quite poorly. After a dispute between the USSR and Egypt as to who was to blame for the poor performances of both Soviet and Egyptian troops, Moscow withdrew in disgust and drastically cut aid.

It's all memes. The split between the USSR and China was inevitable and would have happened had Stalin lived longer. Mao saw the Soviets as a source for technology he could later reverse-engineer, the Soviets saw them as a client state that should behave as such.

Mao had a certain level of respect for Stalin but saw Khrushchev as an upstart and this is why relations got so bad under him when the Soviets demanded that China undertake a degree of de-stalinization. Mao thought he should be the natural leader of the Communist world with Stalin's passing and Moscow disagreed. These were greater intangible issues that drove the split more than any personal spats.

The reason Romania had so many "reserves" and patriotic guard was they considered any abled bodied male, who had preformed a turn of service, aged 18 to 65, to be some form of reserve.
Romania probably didn't have enough small arms to arm their men, at least not modern. You could have seen whole Regiments armed with old Mausers from WWI.

Anyone employed in a state security or public safety role, from firefighters, ambulance corps, security guards, to city sanitation workers, were part of the patriotic guard. So we're the oldest members of their youth corps, 16-18.

This was also true to the GDR and USSRs reserve figures though they were backed up by a far more militant vanguard of troops, including the party militia of the GDR and the MVD of Russia/USSR.

T. Russian guy whos too autistic about the Warsaw pact.

1.) The T-72 was produced under license in both Czechoslovakia and Poland and this gave them access to more. East German economy and workforce was too small to do this.

2.) East Germany cut its military budget in the late 1980s, following Gorbachev's lead. Honecker of course opposed Gorbachev at every turn but with Soviet aid drying up he was desperate for economic stability.

3.) The Soviets planned to "loan" T-72s from their own forces in GDR to the East Germans in the event of war. They had upwards of 6,000 MBTs there in the 1980s with many being replaced by T-80s so there were plenty of T-72s to go around.

Interesting enough the Soviets didn't station their best T-80 tank model, the T-80U, in GDR. Instead they went for the T-80B as they were trying to prevent NATO from gaining intell on it.

Warsaw Pact was the Second World's answer to NATO.
A military alliance that was centered around protecting their borders, interests, and way of life from Western influence/invasion (Though it most scenarios it was the Warsaw Pact initiating a battle). They were pretty much subordinates to the USSR, which was the major source of all resources. But each nation had their own government and military, which were really all Soviet puppets to varying degrees.
They almost all (mostly) used Soviet designed weapons and equipment, to ensure operational compatibility/familiarity, but each designed their own infantry gear.
>>
>>32593547
For example, East Germany had a surprising amount of independence for what they were. They were free to modify what they wanted on their equipment and to organize their forces however they wished. Government served citizens of the nation and only referred to Moscow when they wanted to know how the situation between the USSR and NATO was.

The only real stipulations placed on East Germany by the Soviets were that they could not use Stahlhelms like in the World Wars, they could not reunify with West Germany, and they had to make payments to the USSR for damages after WW2.
>>
>>32593271
Most likely.
>>
>>32593613
This isn't true.

The East Germans had their economy deliberately made 100% on the Soviets, their foreign policy had to be identical to the Soviets down to taking part in wars like Angola and Ogaden and helping Arabs against Israel that they had no interest in otherwises.

The NVA were basically extra Soviet divisions and in wartime would have fallen under direct command of Soviet Generals.

After Poland East Germany was the least independent Warsaw Pact state. Bulgaria was the most.

To clarify what I meant. Bulgaria was the most independent by permission of Moscow. The Romanians were more independent, but the Soviets didn't like that.

Romania was the most independent, to the point where they were Warsaw Pact in name only. Really, the only reason Ceausescu didn't withdraw from it was because he remembered what happened to the Czechs and Hungarians when they went "too far". He played Moscow very well, opposing them on certain issues (i.e. not cutting ties with Israel, still supporting China, and opposing the 1968 Czech invasion) while maintaining the alliance with the Communist bloc in name.
>>
>>32594880
It depends on the era. Stalin was very clever and in synch with the US. He made some errors, such as thinking that the US wouldn't commit to Korea, but he also knew that the US would never attack first.

Meanwhile by the early 1980s, the hardline Soviet leadership led by Andropov was very much certain that there was a strong possibility that Reagan would start shit first. This is why the early 1980s was such a tense time in the Cold War.

>To what degree was Bulgaria independent? Sorry if it appears that I'm getting overly specific with this. Also were there ever any indications that certain countries wouldn't hold with the PACT for long if war actually broke out?

Bulgaria's communist leadership was extremely loyal and crisis free. It was created by avid Stalinist Georgi Dimitrov who while Bulgarian was a member of Stalin's inner circle. Dimitrov even advocated making Bulgaria a Republic of the USSR, but ultimately Stalin killed the idea over fears of it creating a war with Turkey.

The longest ruler of Communist Bulgaria, Todor Zhikov, was just as loyal to the USSR and followed Moscow's lead in any policy chances and shifts. Becoming Stalinist when Stalin demanded and destalinizing when Khrushchev demanded.

As a result, Bulgaria was treated with a greater level of "trust" than the other Warsaw Pact states and was given quasi-autonomy. They also had access to weapons systems the rest of the WP states got later or not at all, such as MiG-25's and S-300's.

As for countries not holding up with the Warsaw Pact, the Soviets were well aware of this threat. East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland all had large Soviet garrisons that would rapidly take over the territory in the event of war and the satellite regime not complying with Moscow's demand. Bulgaria was always quite loyal, but the wild card was Romania. Ceausescu was in many ways a member of the Warsaw Pact in name only and probably wouldn't have fought NATO unless it was clear-cut aggression by the West.

>Come again? Leftists actually revere the leader of the Stasi?

The German Far-left still has a certain level of reverence for East Germany. In particular, the substantially influential pro-Palestinian and pro-refugee groups, the Greens, and so on. It's becoming weaker over time as the far left trades Marxist-Leninist Communism for a more modern vision of social justice mixed with idealistic Communism.
>>
>>32604955
Interesting. Also I'm not sure how much you know on the topic but do you know if there's still any large-scale communist sentiment in any of the Eastern European countries? Also how far behind is East Germany compared to West Germany today (in terms of regions, not meaning countries)
>>
>>32604955
>idealistic communism
>idealism

this is the work of those fucking Social Democrats, goddamn centrists
>>
>>32605059
Communism is extremely unpopular outside of Russia in Eastern Europe today, the ideology is basically seen as a tool of foreign domination and repression. In places like the Baltics they'll essentially arrest you for being a Communist. Moldova, a former Soviet Republic, recently elected quasi-Communists to power though and Belarus is still essentially Communist in all but name only.

As for East vs West Germany today, they were in essence two different countries at the time ore reunification much like North and South Korea, with the capitalist counterpart drastically ahead of the communist one. Today there are still differences and the admittedly "ugly" Communist architecture still plagues must of eastern Germany. But it has taken decades, and the German Federal government and effort of the locals has allowed it to notably lessen the gap between East and West.

Interestingly enough Eastern Germany still votes fairly left-wing, with Merkel (an East Germany herself) finding much of her powerbase and support there. This is opposed to Bavaria, which is essentially the Texas of Germany. A bastion of conservatism (for European standards) that acts quite independent and often defies the Berlin government. Bavaria's current President has refused Muslim migrants, for instance.

In 1989 Polish Il-14 and MiG-15/17 were long gone (last was decommissioned in 1985).
Also An-12 were permanently grounded at this time, due to problems with servicing its engines.

Su-17 were never considered as spearate "trainers". Su-17UM3 (in Poland designated Su-20) were always part of regiments equiped with Fitters only

Also Polish AF never had 12 UB Fulcrums. They had around 12-15 MiG-29 in total, from which no more than 4 UB version. Later additional used MiG-29 were bought from Czech and Germany

In 1989 Polish Navy had Mod. Kashin class (proj 61E) not Kashin class (proj 56E) destroyer (ORP Warszawa)

This list is also lacking around 150 SA-3 (S-175) SAMs, which were (and still are) used by Navy

Fun fact: during its service in Polish Army OT-64 were never adressed by this name. Till the end of it service it was known as SKOT ("Sredni Kołowy Opancerzony Transporter" - Medium Wheeled Armored Transporter)

No. Romania had licensed the AKM from Russia and was even exporting them (and the PSL) to various sandniggers. There were plenty to go around.
also the "patriotic guards" were stood up in 1968, as a direct result of the events in Czechoslovakia
other than that, you are correct.

Poland would definitely have told the USSR to fuck off, Romania would try to do the same before discovering that Moscow didn't even invite them to the party, but you can be sure that Czechoslovakia, the DDR, and ESPECIALLY Bulgaria would have followed. Tough shit mate, they've got the best stuff and lots of it.
Fuck, the Bulgarians were so closely aligned towards the USSR that some Soviet diplomats and politicians found them too extreme.

Reminds me of a joke. Deng Xiaoping and Jarzuleski are discussing politics.

"So, comrade Xiaoping, how many dissidents do you think you have in China?"
"I don't really know... I'd say, 35-38 millions of them? And you, how is it in Poland?"
"Eh, more or less the same."

Until the 80s, you get mostly WW2 tier stuff. Fake leather belts and webbing, canvas pouches, a shovel, a canteen and a tent.

Then, they jump 40 years forward, and get the 6b3/4/5 series of vests, which work as both body armor and webbing, with pouches for a couple mags and grenades or similarily shaped accessories (tourniquets, medpacks). 4 mags isn't that big, so in Afghanistan they wore that, plus a Chicom chest rig widened to take 6 mags instead of 3, and an old canvas pouch on the belt for 3-4 more mags. Fun fact, you can still see Russian forces with modular webbing, modern body armor, kevlar helmets and all of that jazz, with a 60s vintage canvas pouch hanging on their belt, because you never have enough ammo.

The warsaw pact were upgrading their T-54/55 to T-54/55AM standard.

Which was cheaper then buying a T-72M.

Sure thing anon, here's Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia of course as we know nearly went to war with the USSR during the Stalinist era, but relations recovered quickly when Khrushchev came to power. How've ever Yugoslavia was highly critical of the Soviets interventions in Hungary and Czechoslovakia and were often supportive of the Chinese, which led to cold ties until Gorbachev who allowed for a drastic increase in the amount of weapons sold.

In a war between the east and west, Yugoslavia would have tried to remain neutral. It's army had reserve stockpiles of nearly every type of weapon the state had acquired dating back to even before WW2

Albania. Albania under Enver Hoxha withdrew from the Warsaw Pact and sided with China against the USSR. They received huge amounts of Chinese aid. However after Deng Xiaoping relations with Albania deteriorated

Albanian doctrine was modeled along Maoist "people's war" concept. This included the construction of thousands of ineffective bunkers and the importation of more artillery systems then there were soldiers. As a result of this and budget shortages much of Albanias artillery was thrown away.

Information on how much equipment was in service is hard to come by due to the nature of the regime and poor maintenance.
