I'm looking to purchase my first 308 sometime this year but I was hoping you guys would have some advice as to which one and where I should look.
I want it to be a battle rifle but would probably use it for hunting as well (White tail deer and Elk with my brother).
I was looking at the PTR 91 as a possible candidate. Can't really spend over 1500.
I'm probably going to get a Mosin Nagant as well but that's not really a 308 (But damn close)
>>
>>32570659
why not just buy the mosin and a couple crates of ammo
>>
>>32570670
Might do that, but wanted something that wasn't made almost 70 years ago.
Also hearing a lot about a 6.5 round.

Do it faggot. Don't worry about reloading; you're never going to feed it ammo whose cases are worth reloading. Remember it's a battle rifle; expect 2-5MOA with cheap ammo and brutal but reliable cycling.
>>
>>32570659
I love my PTR-91 GI
It has yet to have a FTF, FTE, or anything like that. Even when I shot a few mags through it at -30F. I'd say the only caveat is that it's fairly heavy.
Mosins are pretty crap. Avoid if you can.
>>
>>32570722
interesting, I'll keep that in mind.

What about a 6.5 Creedmoor?
>>
>>32570740
6.5 creedmoor is .308s brother. It's smart, well educated and pretty much outshined him on everything possible. But he's a bit more expensive and not available as often since he's newer and everyone wants him

Google seems to agree. There's a lot of complaining AR10 owners and a few articles.

So the 6.5 does well in semi auto but not belt fed. Is that what I understood from this?

I looked around and really only found Savage as the main seller for the 6.5. There are a few others but none that I could find have the really nice look of this one.
>>
>>32570789
Correction: Everyone needed at least one Mosin when they were ~$70.

At current prices nobody needs one.
>>
>>32571139
No. 6.5 is purportedly shit in semi autos because it was designed for bolt actions. I don't even know where you got belt fed from.
>>
>>32571179
Sorry, was looking through the other threads and somewhere down the line someone mentioned belt fed.

I love mine. I got it for $700 new when they came out. It should come factory with 20 round mags x 2 and one 5 round magazine.

>>

OP isn't asking for perfection here lol.

My other recommendation would be the Remington 700. If OP doesn't mind bolt action. They have decent price ranges between the 700 models.
>>
>>32571475
>>32571488
So I guess I won't get that thing then...
>>
>>32571481
What would you recommend?
>>
>>32571629
You can't base that off one picture... 1000 rounds through mine and not a single issue.
>>
>>32571680
That's fair. I'll do more research.

>>32571618
I'll take a look at that, thanks!
>>
>>32571646
Just use .308/7.62 NATO like everyone else, or get an AK and use 7.62x39 (AK-47) or 5.45x39 (AK-74). You're really overthinking this I think, unless you're some kind of competitive shooter
>>
>>32571709
Your probably right but it's my first real purchase so that was bound to happen.
>>
>>32571709
>>32571735
I just saw you referred to hunting. In that case, do not go with 7.62x39, as it cannot reach out as far as .308. 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 are also rather light for hunting such big game
>>
>>32571746
So, .308 then.
>>
>>32571746
>>32571765
In other words, if you want a battle rifle that you can hunt deer with, you are looking at .308/7.62 NATO. For more accuracy/stopping power, just use ammo meant for hunting rather than milsurp or other cheap ammo
>>
>>32571774
Any nice battle rifles in .308 caliber under 1200 that you could recommend?
>>
>>32570659
DSArms FAL
>>
>>32571810
I'm still doing that research myself unfortunately so I'm not really qualified to give an answer. I have heard that gas piston-operated AR-15s are more reliable than the usual direct impingement ones, albeit somewhat heavier. If you can't find any good answers in this thread, there are always /arg/ and battle rifle general threads on /k/ too. Best of luck

PTR 91 GI
AR10 build
Molot VEPR

If you want a FAL up your budget and do an Imbel build. DSA cuts too many corners and Century is S H I T.
M14 is also a thing but it's out of budget and sort of lackluster aside from looks.
FNAR is a thing that will sometimes drift into your budget. Super accurate, borderline impossible to field strip. Not a weapon of war by any means.
>>
>>32571848
>>32571873
Not sure if same person but thank you!

This thread has been great and I've certainly learned a lot. Didn't know you could build your own FAL. Might buy the stock version then upgrade it over time but that seems like a waste.

Canadian-fag here. I used to have both a 91 and a 93 with all the options back in the day (1980s). Got confiscated several years ago by the Gestapo. I miss my black girls. :^(

Those are nice pics. Never tire seeing them.

Comparing my PTR and FAL and AR-10 (that I just traded) I always liked the PTR. Got my deer last fall with it.

Here is my opinion on the three:

AR-10: good gun, easy to use but a bit expensive. I got a PSA kit rifle on sale with a Primary Arms optic and it was always accurate. Seemed to be a little under gassed and would short stroke on occasion. Overall OK but I have more fun with AR-15's. 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards.

FAL: DSA is the only one making new ones. Garage builds can be epic rifles. I happened to get lucky with an early DSA built STG-58. No problems with function and decent accuracy 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards. Mags are $20+

PTR: I have the railed top version. Do not put a long scope on this rifle. The charging handle goes back close to the receiver. I put a fixed 5x optic on mine. It beats up brass but that is still reloadable. Never fails. 2-4 inch groups.

That's what you get for not violently resisting communist jackboots.
>>
>>32573804
>Do not put a long scope on this rifle.

I put a Vortex 2-10 on mine and it works okay. I do have to be a bit careful with the charging handle though.
>>
>>32573643
Did you get some sort of compensation?
I'm guessing you didn't but I was wondering.

Faaru is best raifu.

Memes aside, though, the PTR really is a great entry level BR, and in all honesty its better than the DSA Voyager because the PTR GI is essentially a complwte semi-auto G3 clone will all the features
while the Voyager is missing a forged receiver, lacks a carry handle cut, and contains a lot of alloys to cut costs (unlike a proper FAL, which is made from forged steel and 2.5mm thick stampings and weighs over 12lbs, like God and FN intended).
>>

PTR-91 a nice, but a fair word of warning, unless you have Hickok45 hands, you will have a hard time reaching all the controls aside from the trigger (safety, mag release, charging handle).

You literally needs Aye-Aye fingers to reach the mag release, but luckily as of very recently PTR has included a secondary paddle mag release (just like on the military issue G3) so you don't have to loosen your grip on the pistol grip to remove a spent mag.
>>
>>32570659

If $1,500 is your budget and you want an accurate rifle and don't mind bolt-action then get a Ruger Precision Rifle. You can get one on Gunbroker for around $1,100 shipped (I see one now). You'll have a little money left over for a cheap optic, too. Or you can save up and get some decent glass.
>>
>>32570659
The Poverty Tier Rifle 91 is a fine
rifle.
>>
Well, Here's my issue. The only current MFG for the FAL is DSA and I hear bad things about their products.
The PTR has a load of complaints, many of which can be seen here, but at least they can be made ok.
Anyone, besides the other guy further up the thread, have any luck with the DSA FAL?

Shitty memes and racism, my friend.

I've taken it as a sign that I'll just have to wear it down myself.

yeah it was a great sub $80 rifle, but its not worth nowhere near current market prices, which are manipulated like hell by the resellers and big dealers like Classic that are sitting on 10's of 1000's.

So is the only way to get a proper FAL by getting a surplus kit and making it yourself?

Or does DSA make a new production semiauto FAL that is more faithful to the design than their voyager is?
