Here's the Kalaat Béni Abbès, a amphibious transport dock for the Algerian Navy, also in service with the Italian Navy.

Armed with:

>1 OTO Melara 76/62 mm SR Super Rapido
>2 x OTO Melara KBA 25/80 mm
>8-cell SYLVER A50 VLS for 8 Aster 15&30 missiles (1x8 more A50 VLS FFBNW)
>3 AW-101 transport helicopters or 5 Super Lynx helicopters type

In other discussion points,

Where can the DoD find savings for the Navy?

Why? To get resource contracts from dictator?

No idea, but it's an enhanced version of the Italian variant.

Speaking on the Italian Navy, here is the Horizon-class frigate which is almost a half sister to the British Type 45.

Armed with:

>48-cell A50
>8× Exocet MM40
>8× TESEO Mk-2/A
>OTO Melara 76 mm
>3× Otobreda 76mm
>1× Sadral Mistral CIWS
>2× OTO Melara KBA 25/80 mm
>2× WASS B515/1 single torpedo tubes for MU90 Impact (with 24 torpedos stored)
>1 x helicopter type AW-101 or SH90A

Pretty heavily armed for a frigate.

I too have wondered why Algeria bought this ship.

My belief is that they intend to use it for air assaults along the North African coast in the event of a conflict against Morocco or in the event of another civil war. Could also be used for ASW to monitor activity of foreign subs along the coast in crisis situations.

but all in all it's a somewhat odd purchase.

For guys that served in the Navy: what were the best and worst parts of being on a ship?
>>

>nation consisting of long coastline against trackless desert
Being able to land a couple companies of troops on any given stretch of shoreline is always important.

Why the tandem deck guns?
>>
>>32563297

Italy has a thing for them properly to do with the Mediterranean being their main operating environment where a lot of small boats can turn nasty at short notice.

Why Algeria though? Barbary fags gonna get their revenge on us?

>Put only AA on your destroyers
>Put only surface weapons on your frigates
What did they mean by this?

Worst part is difficulty communicating with loved ones. Watch everyday really sucks. Days blend together. Enough days without a port visit and everyone gets cranky and hates the environment. Never enough sleep. Depending on your job you don't see the sun for days and days.

Good things are the beautiful days on the open ocean. Port visit. The travel. The sense of being almost independent. Make your own power, water, can't run away from much. Those who are hungry can make a good name for themselves on a deployment. Lots of equipment to learn.

What would a radar return look like for that?

Being sandwiched by Libya and Egypt (which aren't exactly friendly) would justify the need for amphibious capability
>>
>>32560350
The LSC frigate, if done right (akin to the saudi frigate), will go a long ways to get cheap yet capable ships.

They did a test in '13 against a "high diving supersonic test target", which would be the mach 4+ AQM-37. mach 4 would be about how fast the kill package would be after going though the atmo, and at that range there is no real room to manuver.

>8× Exocet MM40
>8× TESEO Mk-2/A

It's 8 Exocet OR 8 Teseo. Not both.

>OTO Melara 76 mm
>3× Otobreda 76mm

It's 2x for the gimped French variant, and 3x for the proper Italian one.

>1× Sadral Mistral CIWS

Only on French version.

>2× OTO Melara KBA 25/80 mm

Only on Italian version, the French one gets little widdle 20mm.

So it's decently armed, but no-where near as heavily armed as you try to imply it is. They still both need to have AESAs installed on them though. Get the EMPAR AESA variant from the Spagetti FREMM, can't be too hard to implement.

The three barges on davits significantly ruin air operations. Having a broader deck at that point would make it so much easier to move helos around. Particularly weird considering it does have a well deck. If they really wanted to keep them they could just cover the barges with a larger deck and use another deployment system than old school davits, like some sort of extendable rails.

Africa and Middle-East hardly get safer by the day. Having a modicum of amphibious capabilities goes a long way toward having political weigh for African Union or UN potential missions.

2016 again saw quite a lot of commissions for the PLAN. Albeit only one Destroyer, it was a year of the supply and amphibious landing ships. Frigates and Corvettes were spammed just as usual.
2017 will probably be the year of the combat ships, with at least 3 DDGs and a large 50k tonne combat support ship commissioned, a new Carrier launched and another carrier as well as multiple cruisers taking shape.
Nothing is mentioned about submarines, again.
