that's literally the case. People start fights because they don't think that there's a potentially lethal outcome. They think they can brutalise their victim and that it wont escalate past punching. The presence of a firearm means that if you instigate something, it will quickly escalate, and likely not in your favour.

In your scenario, the people who are angry at eachother and want to punch on instead have the mentality of wanting to murder the other person. You're not being realistic.

I'll give you an example from nofuns land

i have an uncle with adhd, and anger issues, who is huge, scary as fuck, and he spent some lovely years fighting viet cong. he mouths off to police, crazy people, religious leaders, who ever. he has also on one or two occasions needed to draw his gun when people thought pulling a knife on him would be a good idea.

just to extrapolate a bit, i'm not trying to say that they would have crashed into your yard and murdered you. maybe they come in and do the same thing, but instead of a bat, your buddy goes inside and grabs a 12 gauge. if the "gatecrashers" were strapped themselves, you're now involved in a deadly conflict.

i'm not sure how familiar aussies are with the whole trayvon martin fuckassery, but i think that's a pretty good demonstration of how firearms can escalate a situation. yeah, zimmerman put himself into that situation in the first place, and even though the shooting was justified, it was needless. the fact that he had a gun on him escalated the conflict from him getting his ass beat to him potentially losing control of a weapon and getting killed.

i just don't think the issue is as cut and dry as you guys could have it.
