Hey /k/, just bought an SLR104FR.
I bought 7n6 for it, and my question involves cleaning. For my Mauser and Mosin, after shooting corrosive ammo, I just pour boiling water down the barrel and over the parts, then clean like normal. Is the procedure the same for semi-autos? I know I have to clean the gas tube and whatnot but does chrome lining change the procedure at all?
>>
>>32557726
Keep doing what you're doing. If you're worried about it then shoot some wd-40 down the tube and around the fiddly bits, let it drip dry then use a real lubrication like you normally would.
>>
>>32557726
Just do what you're usually doing. The only chrome lined part of the 104FR to my knowledge is the barrel. I have an SGL31 and I spray everything down with boiling water mixed with some ballistol, dry then clean as normal.

And technically, you don't have to clean the gas tube as it doesn't really affect the function of the gun if it is rusted, but you should anyways because it's a $1,000 gun.
>>
>>32557726

Hot, soapy water down the gas tube and barrel along with a cleaning around the bolt, particularly the bolt face. That's all you need.

http://www.waltherforums.com/forum/free-range-time/36658-warning-romanian-mauser-8mm-ammo.html

8x57IS and 8x57JS are interchangeable, and that's what your gun is supposed to take.
it's possible there could be a problem with headspace.
OR there could be an obstruction in the chamber, like dirt or crud, keeping the round from going all the way in.
OR there could be a problem with that ammo.

If it were my gun the first thing I'd do is clean the fuck out of the chamber and try again to get a round to chamber. Don't force it, like retard strength. If it doesn't close with normal strength, step back and try something else.

Next I would buy a different ammo and try to close the bolt on it.

If that didn't work I would take the rifle to a gunsmith and ask him to check the headspace.

I have a question about German WWII -military acceptance markings aka. "Waffenamt stamps", I know that weapons issued to Wehrmacht (Heer, Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe) were marked with the Nazi eagle with a letter below it, what about weapons that were never property of Reichswehr or Wehrmacht & went straight from factory to the SS? Also could a Waffen-SS unit formed in summer 1941 & sent to the front in 1942 even have had weapons manufactured for the SS rather than for the Wehrmacht & later have been transfered to SS?

Alright OP, first of all there is a lot of disinformation on the subject involving "neutralizing" a corrosive salt. It's pure bullshit, the only reason they suggest you mix windex with water is because the Windex evaporates fast and water alone causes it to rust even more.

The fact is the only action you should be taking to avoid corrosion is whiping the corrosive residue out of the barrel, and a bore-snake works wonderfully for that.

On the bore snake you should use something that evaporates quickly like Hoppes #9, the more it stinks the faster it's evaporating.

Do not put water onto your rifle to clean out corrosive residue, ever.

My after-shoot cleaning regimen entails running a Hoppes soaked bore snake through the bore at least 5 times. It works.

>>
>>32562750
it is
1. more work
2. you have to dry every part you got wet or it WILL rust
3. will still need something to jam down the bore

Why not just use a fucking Hoppes #9 coated bore snake and be done with it?
>>

>>
>>32562791
Generally that means you didn't get all the corrosive stuff out.

Just like cleaning you gotta run a bore snake through it several times, 7 is a good number to shoot for.
>>
>>32562719
Yes it is. You pour water down the barrel to remove the salts. You make the water hot so it dries quicker. You scrub the barrel with patches or a borensnake to get remaining water. Then you clean as normal with oil.
>>
>>32562825
I guess I'll give it another shot on something that I can live with getting rusted, gas tube or something. Everything that google turned up with said that Hoppe's either didn't work for corrosive or required several days of cleaning in a row but I'll just have to see how it turns out for me.
>>
>>32562825
Or you just pour a bit of hot water in and run a snake through. If our wole argument is "using water is too much work" I'll counter that running a snake covering in oil through seven times to clear the salts is way more work.
>>
>>32562847
>>32562825
>>32562839

I don't shoot very much when I shoot, but I shoot often. I can verify a boresnake w/ hoppes works perfectly for keeping it from rusting.

it only takes like 3 rounds for it to rust on top of the fucking chrome lining in the bore, the grooves and the geometry around those cuts are where it's most likely to start rusting.

>>32562859
It's more work because you have to dry the fucking water off of it afterward. You should be running a snake through the bore several times anyway if you are cleaning it.

It really is the easiest and most time-effective way to do it.
>>
>>32562886
Drying is usually done just in the basic course of cleaning though? Wiping shit down with a rag dries it. For the bore, the patches dry it, or the soft brush if that's what you use.
I'm not the other guy but I really don't see either how running a bore snake with Hoppe's >7 times is easier than some water (not even necessarily hot water) and once through with a brush.
>>
>>32562911
how are they applying the water?

Because I've heard everything from boiling a pot of water and pouring it down the bore to holding it under a spigot in the yard for a few seconds. Then you have to dry every droplet of water off of it, and it's going to take quite a bit of water or a lot of scrubbing after that too.

But whatever, if you shoot enough corrosive 5.45x39 you'll figure it out, as long as everyone knows that hoppes + bore snake is an option eventually I will gain converts.

I don't think red army standard and silver bear and that 5.45 stuff is corrosive though.
>>
>>32559497
I built a Hungarian Underfolder. Bent the receiver, spot welded, heat treated, black oxide finished it. Was a fun experience.
>>
>>32562937
It doesn't have to be hot, the heat just makes it evaporate more quickly. The water is what actually flushes out the salts. People who claim their favorite cleaner is "salt neutralizing" don't really know what they're talking about; if Hoppe's and a snake works for you it's because you run it through a bunch of times and it clears the salts out. A few seconds of water to flush them out seems a little easier imo. Not really sure what you meant by "quite a bit of water or a lot of scrubbing after that" because a single flush is actually all it takes. I've cleaned my Mosin and Mauser like that for years.

And "you have to dry every droplet of water off of it" is a pretty big exaggeration. A few drops of water isn't gonna rust a gun.
>>
>>32562937
I don't know about AKs, but for corrosive ammo in my Mosin all I do is pour a bottle of water down the chamber and make sure to get a bit of water on the bolt face, firing pin, and muzzle area. Then I run a water patch down the barrel and proceed to clean like normal.

Never had a rust problem.
>>
>>32562991
since we agree on the action of preventing the rusting (scraping the corrosive shit out) then it's much more clear that something that evaporates quickly is likely less work IMO.

>And "you have to dry every droplet of water off of it" is a pretty big exaggeration. A few drops of water isn't gonna rust a gun.

It might OP's Arsenal. It definitely would my Bulgarian kit build, lots of nooks and crannies around the rifle for water to sit in.

>>32563023
I guess as long as it works it's really not a big deal. To each their own. It's just my opinion that water is easier. I don't think a few droplets is going to rust an Arsenal if it didn't do anything to a Mauser with a lot of the finish worn off. Even if it does, like I said before drying can usually be done just during normal cleaning.

54R is significantly more corrosive than 7n6. Also the Turk surplus 8mm I shoot is some of the most corrosive shit you can possibly buy, the Turks were huge fans of KCl.
>>
>>32563023

My normal cleaning regimen is a patch or three of CLP down the barrel, a dry patch, and then one last patch of CLP. Then I wipe down whatever outside metal surfaces I can reach with a CLP patch. It's not really that intense.

Why are you so desperate to make everyone use Hoppe's, when flushing with water is what actually clears the salts? In fact it's the water in Hoppe's or anything else that actually clears out the salts. The main component of Hoppe's is Ammonium Hydroxide, or Ammonia dissolved in water. Basically the same shit that makes people think Windex works--it's not the ammonia doing the dissolving, it's just water flushing it out.

British army doctrine was to flush out a barrel with boiling water to flush out the barrel after firing corrosive ammo in enfields. There was even a special funnel issued to fit in the chamber to necessitate. Boiling water will evaporate quickly, and if you aren't a complete dumbass you'll do a wipedown of your gun just in case anyway before wiping it down with something like CLP

Again, in a pinch using water will work if you dry it out really well afterward.

The salts "dissolving" into the water is fucking bullshit, if you don't believe me, try with a pathc of water vs a patch of hoppes or something.

The action we are using is scraping it out of the barrel to prevent corrosion.
>>
>>32563527
But nobody said anything about it dissolving in water. I even said earlier that the goal is to flush it out. Are you even trying anymore? Or have you been huffing too much Hoppe's?

What's the cheapest way to get into concealed carry? I don't have shit, carry ammo, holsters, or even a firearm small enough to carry, and it costs like 150 dollars for the permit, and mandatory 16 hour training costs 100-150 dollars.

I only have 500 dollars I can devote to this, and if I was in any other state besides Illinois, I could get some very good carry options in that price range in any other state but the fees just to process the application suck so much into my gear money that I don't think it's possible.

If you're having luck 'scraping it out' you might be overcleaning like a motherfucker. There was a guy on one of the other gun boards who did a test popping corrosive primers over metal washers (like 30 or 40 of them) and doing a wipe down over each with a different cleaner. The point was to find a cleaner that you could by to skip the water step. Some of the washers rusted a lot less than others, but the only washers that didnt rust at all iirc were the washer wiped with water, and the control.

You are spreading disinformation that could damage peoples property.
>>
>>32563677
Bullshit, it works perfectly for me.
>>
>>32563676
I looked at some documentation, it looks like they didn't use the Waffenamt from 1941-1943, and after they became super huge in late 1943, they used a Waffenamt that looks a lot like the Wehrmacht one, but the eagle is more detailed.

Oh yeah, I remember that test. I don't remember how well Hoppe's did, I only noticed that Remoil rusted like shit.

And it only works perfectly for you when you scrape it out with ~10 passes with a bore snake. How is that not overcleaning compared to pouring some water down the bore?
>>
>>32563722
bore snake bristles are mostly worn down, it's just cloth on bore for the most part.

Bore snakes take multiple passes to remove solvent anyway.

ive seen the in range video. How do you seal the ak better?

Are there any better replacement systems than the piston?

I don't have the webm but it showed just how much the ak barrel flexed and imparted a wobble on the bullet. Im willing to bet the piston has something to do with it.

For my Feminism and Media studies class I'm doing my final project on toxic masculinity. I told my Teachress that I was going to do a performance piece on toxic masculinity where I blow off my dick with an AR15 to demonstrate the destructive nature of america's obsession with guns and how it relates to small penises and insufficient manhood manifesting itself as a violent facade.

The problem is I'm too poor to afford an AR15. In California they are really hard to find too! I did manage to walk straight into a walmart and buy 5.56 ARMORED PIERCING BULLETS because it's SO EASY to get them.

Will this work? do I really need a rifle since i"m only shooting at like 2 inches?

>Why do they keep saying there is no objectively best rifle? What can the G3 M1A Mas and AK do that the AR can't do light years better

It's because, by their own admission, that mudtests are very specific situational tests. Guns that perform well in the mud test may not perform well in other adverse condition testing. ARs, as far as I understand, do pretty poorly after being submerged in water, whereas AKs wont give a shit.

Also, it has a lot to do with the complexity of the system and what type of army you're outfitting. ARs are good rifles but they are more complicated to maintain (and actually require maintenance) as opposed to an AK platform which does not require that much careful handling. ARs are good for trained troops, AKs are good for untrained irregulars
>>
>>32566592
They don't do poorly unless you don't let the rifle drain. So, if you're in some situation where you have to come out the water and a nanosecond later fire the gun, maybe it's a bad choice. I don't think that's a realistic scenario, though.

Hello friends! I would like some advice.

I got some money for Christmas and my birthday and am thinking about getting a new rifle.

I'll be getting it from Field and Stream 'cuz I got a girftcard there. All in all, I have $150 to put towards a gun in gift money. After that, it's all me. That being said, price isn't the biggest issue, more so the somewhat limited selection.

Here are my choices;

Marlin 1895, 45/70; no real use, and probably can't afford to feed it, and I'm in no position to get a reloading setup.

Browning BLR, 308; I've wanted a lever gun and a 308 for a while so this is what I'm leaning towards

Oracle or other cheap AR; no use for and already have an SKS in case of SHTF.

Mossman MVP Patrol, 308; I want a 308 and the detachable mag plus smaller size seems cool

Other suggestions? Experience with any of these? Please and thanks.

Pic related is what's left of the current plate.

Has anyone ever bought online from cogunsales?
Looking at gunbroker I see a fun I want, but searching a tad more I found that cogunsales has the same thing but for a lot cheaper.

Any experience with them? I'm not sure if I should stay with gunbroker since I've already done deals there and they went smooth as fuck or if I should get the cheaper one from cogunsales.

Brass brushes, cleaner of some kind, patches, oil, and preferably a steel rod. Theyre pretty cheap.
>>
>>32582326
Reasonably you need a minimum of snakes, oil, and a cleaning wire with a brass brush. Patches and a head to hold them on the cleaning wire are good.

OTIS makes pretty ok kits. I think they even sell lower end OTIS kits at WalMart. They get bonus points for being very compact.

Add in q-tips and pipe cleaners from dollar stores. Get some brass scrapers for heavy buildup.

RAR fucked front sight.jpg

I bought a Ruger American Rimfire a while back and recently put some techsights on it. I thought the barrel might have been canted when I first got it but now that I've put the techsights on it (they're taller so it's more noticeable), I can tell the barrel is definitely canted or the hole for the front sight was tapped on an angle. I have to have the rear sight adjusted about a third of the way to the left to get it to shoot straight at 50 yards.

Should I just call Ruger and have them fix it? How much do they charge for this? I'm pretty sure the barrel is pressed into the receiver on RARs, so wouldn't they basically end up just giving me a new gun?

All I wanted was something I cared less about than my CZ 452 ultralux for /innawoodsing/ that also had a flush fitting magazine. This sucks.

Is it just that nobody wanted it, and it served no real purpose? Not small enough to CC compared to all the compacts on the market and .380 is too weak, so it serves no purpose but to have just because you want it?

I've never fired a rifle before, and I picked up a nugget the other day. What's a good range to start practicing and what are some good practices to do?
I'm also cross dominant, should I try shooting with my main and just close the other eye or should I learn to shoot with my off-hand to shoot with both eyes open?
>>
>>32586067
Well, you picked a shitty rifle to learn on. But I did it too, and millions of Soviets and Chinks did it, so you should manage.
Start off short range. 30-50 meters will do. Don't even think about going shooting until you have the four big safety rules memorized. Always remember to hold the rifle firmly to your shoulder, pulling it in- it'll reduce recoil. Trigger pulls should be smooth and done with the pad of your finger. Don't try to control recoil at first, you'll pull your aim off. Try to start off sitting down, or you'll have to worry about your stance. Always remember to stay leaning a bit forward.
Learn to shoot righty, keep both eyes open. Maybe squint your left some if your brain doesn't want to focus through your right.

I'm looking at getting my first AR.

I live in NY, so a standard AR is unfortunately not an option. I can choose between pic related, a featureless AR with detachable magazine, or a modified M&P 15 with the collapsible stock and pistol grip, but a fixed magazine, which loads from the top.

I'm not sure which to go for. It seems to me the featureless would be more useful in an emergency situation, with the ability to quickly reload, but realistically I'm thinking I'll only ever shoot it recreationally at the range. The fixed magazine variant is also about $100 cheaper.

Is it feasible and/or reasonable to go for the fixed magazine variant, but convert it to pic related later, if I change my mind and decide I want detachable mags? I know I could swap the stocks no problem, but what would be involved in getting rid of the fixed magazine to accommodate detachable magazines?

Any insight or other suggestions are appreciated; thanks.

As someone who is new to guns, can anyone tell me if there's performance differences (accuracy, general quality, etc) between a Ruger 10/22 and a Marlin 60? From what I understand, the Ruger gets a removable magazine instead of being tube fed, and it has a much larger aftermarket. I know they have pretty much interstate access across the US to have a ccw if they wish, but what if they are going outside of the country. Asking for my dad, former deputy sheriff for 32 years, he might do some traveling this summer and wants some "peace of mind" aka his .45 glock

Yes it fucking does. Higher temperature massively increases water's effectivity as a solvent. Otherwise dishwashers would be using cold water and nobody would bother to boil water to brew tea or coffee.
>>
>>32591767
>traveling outside of the country
>Europe
>wish to bring a firearm

You need the European firearms pass and an invitation for a shooting or hunting event to bring a firearm into any EU state (unless it's transit with the purpose of permanent importation).

>former or current LEO

No exceptions for special snowflakes.
>>
>>32591767
You're subject to all laws of the nation you're going to, which basically means:
Don't, you'll be arrested because they dgaf if you're a foreign cop and almost any country you can go to will frown intensely on the idea of anybody having a CCW.

HR218 LEOSA only applies to the United States and its territories.
If you're really itching to travel with your LEOSA right to carry, try Hawaii, Guam, or Puerto Rico - although all three of those still make you jump through huge hoops for LEOSA carry.

Since guns that use black powder aren't considered firearms in the US, does that mean it's legal to attach suppressors to them? If it's not, why? If it is legal, why don't we see tons of suppressors on the market for black powder guns? Do suppressors not work well on black powder guns for some reason (ie, maybe the gas expands too slowly/the bullets aren't supersonic anyway)?
>>
>>32594063
I believe that suppressors are regulated as their own NFA item. It doesn't matter if you put it on a gun or not.

Secondly, black powder is probably way too dirty to get more than a few shots out with a suppressor before it becomes clogged with residue.
>>
>>32594098
But airguns in the US often have suppressor or some kind of sound dampening on them (I think, I'm not sure. I don't own any airguns) right?
>>
...Is it actually bad to release the slide on an empty chamber with the magazine in, or is that just a bunch of fuddlore?
>>
>>32594157
Airgun suppressors are kind a legal gray area, not even the ATF wants to get involved in it. But here's what I found with some googling

>So, if a device can be REMOVED from an airgun and ATTACHED to a portable firearm and diminish its report, that device is then legally defined as a silencer

So, as long as the gun came from the factory with the suppressor, then it's fine. This works on airguns because they generally don't require too much cleaning.

However a black powder gun would need to have a removable suppressor so that the user can clean out all the gunk that would quickly accumulate. But by making the suppressor removable, it becomes an unregistered suppressor.

tl;dr its more trouble than it's worth to suppress black powder guns
>>

>>
>>32594598
Nope, Hoppes and elbow grease. Clean the barrel and inspect for pitting, cracks, and bulges. Brush/snake it out, put it back together, shoot paper. Easy as that. It was probably some old hardware store special you could get out of a barrel in the days before the ATF. Just don't shoot magnum rounds with it and to ensure barrel longevity I'd stick to lead only. Even if it is a modified or improved just to be on the safe side.

I've wanted to ask Ian this for a while, but can't find a good video to comment on. If anyone has asked this question and Ian has answered it, could you link me to the video? Or maybe one of you supports him on patreon and can ask him there. Or maybe this has already been answered in detail by someone else.

Anyway, I want to know why heel (also called european? why?) mag releases on pistols became a thing and why it was decided as better than the button mag release.

Watching some of Ian's videos on early semi-auto pistols, I noticed that the world's first semi auto has a button mag release, as is found on modern guns. (The C83, pic related). Additionally, many other early semi-auto pistols have botton mag releases. It seems like the button mag release came first, and then for some reason the heel mag release became popular for a short time, and then died out.

So who pioneered the heel mag release? Was it really just a euro thing? Why did their pistol doctrine prefer the heel mag release? I've never shot a pistol with a heel release, so I can't say if it's better or worse, but it seems like having to use a second hand on the gun to change megs increases reload time and takes your attention away from looking down range. Is this wrong? Can any of you guys link me to a good explination or give me a rough breakdown of this topic?
>>
>>32557919
Me. I will personally fuck you, if that's what you want.
>>

>>32594708
Well, she's got rust pitting here and ther everywhere down the barrel. Doesn't look remarkably deep but considering how much rust she bled when I pulled the snake out of her, I have a feeling she won't be operational.
>>
>>32594977
The heel release is much easier to manufacture than the button. Earlier Browning pistols (i.e. 1900 and 1903) used heel releases. You'll notice nations devoted to making fast, cheap pistols will use heel releases (P38, Tokarev, Makarov)
>>
>>32595539
But the Luger has a button mag release, as well as the Tokarev. But the service pistols that replaced both of those have heel mag releases (the P-38 and the Mak). So at some point it seems like nations wanted the button release, and then went with the heel release, and are now going back to the button. Is cost really the only factor in this? I can see cost being a factor when talking about civilian guns, since we always want the cheapest, newest thing, but the military would have some requirements and since they order on the large scale, the price difference would be negligible. Not that I think it costs much more for a button mag release than a heel release, a button release just needs a slightly different mechanism.

If this was the case when semi-auto pistols were first being developed, I could see it being a traditional thing. But it seems like the vast majority of removable magazine fed pistols had button mag releases and then after they were being phased out of service is when we see heel mag releases start popping up. Admittedly I might be wrong, but to my knowledge this is what happened.

Could it be combat doctrine in preserving mags? A button release means you can drop a mag very quickly and pop in a fresh one. A heel mag release forces your hand to be down by the empty mag being ejected, and thus forces you to do something with it (keep it or toss it on the ground). Does this factor into the desire for heel release mechanisms over button release mechanisms?
>>
Do y'all niggas not use brake parts cleaner to clean your gats? That shit is magic.

Also, if I wanted to get a rifle for longish range shooting and hunting should I get it in .270 or 6.5 Creedmore?
>>
>>32595644
Cost and ease of manufacture are basically the only reasons, sorry to say. In WWI and before Germans didn't really care about cost or complexity, they just wanted super nice guns. Nazi-era Germans gave less of a shit about ridiculously good quality and liked cheaper stuff. Nobody prefers a heel release to a button release, they're just not as easy for the soldier. But when you have costs to consider something as simple as that is usually first on the chopping block.
There's a reason basically every handmade Vietnamese and Chinese pistol uses a heel release.
