Funny thing about pocket sand, the concept can work. While I was in training to be an EMT, we had a Captain come in to give a period of instruction on deescalating or escaping violent situations as an EMT. For example, he had the whole class search him to try and find all the weapons he had on him to show how easy it was to hide a deadly weapon (we missed some).

One thing he recommended was keeping crumpled paper balls in your pocket. If someone gets aggressive, you throw them at the person's face and hightail it out of there. Because the aggressor is most likely amped up and ready for a fight (being aggressive and all), they'll flinch and give you a minute to run off and find the cops.

So yeah, pocket sand could theoretically work, if applied properly.
