I live in South Africa, the gun laws are pretty shit compared to what they where like before 2004, but still better than many other countries. You can legally own basically anything with the right permit.

Self defense is legal, and you can get a handgun or pump action shotgun with a self defense license, but only one.

Then you can get 4 firearms that don't include full or semi auto weapons if you are a "occasional hunter/sportsman".

With the permit I have, "dedicated hunter/sportsman", I can own unlimited amount of firearms, excluding only full auto and mortars/rockets/grenades.

There are no carry permits, if you own the gun you can conceal carry without any problems. There are no bans on silencers, you can make one in your garage if you want without problems. There are no mag bans, you can get 75 round AK drums if you want. No barrel length restrictions.

A firearm collector can own full auto rifles/ mortars/ grenade launchers etc, but I believe they can't own the explosive.

Yes I have the dedicated permit, you have to belong to a hunting or sportsman organization. Membership costs me $20 a year so its not really a pain, and I have membership to another local hunting organization that also costs me about $15 a year, but I only joined them to use their private gun range that I have a key too and is almost always empty.

Yes, I had to write a test to get my dedicated permit, but it's pretty easy, they send you a book that you read. The test covers safety, first aid, hunting laws, animal identification, gun maintenance, its very easy obvious stuff if you've been around guns long enough.

The gun laws are annoying. For example, lets say you want to get a hand gun for self defence:

First you have to write and pass a legal test with a private firearms training institute (i.e. when you can and cannot shoot a skinny trying to murder you). This costs you money.

Second, you have to pass a pratical / theory test with mentioned firearms training instituition for that particular type of firearm [handgun]. (+-30 min theory exam with practical shoot afterwards to prove you will not shoot mandelas grand daugther standing near the skinny you want to dispatch). This costs money.

Third, now you can purchase your preffered handgun from a dealer. You will receive a police application form from said dealer. Now you must fill in the application along with a full motivation explaining in excruciating detail why you need this firearm for self defence. (If the person reading your motivation does not like it, your application will be rejected). Along with your aplication, you need to attach: proof of residence, proof of firearm purchase, copies of your ID, testimonials from people that know you stating that you are mentally sound and do not abuse alcohol.

Fourth, now you go to the police station to apply for the firearm licence, and a police competency (backround checks, putting your fingerprints onto a database.) You pay for the application to be processed.

Fifth, now you wait for the application to be processed and approved, licence card printed. Time varies wildly. For my first firearm, (handgun, self-defence) I waited 1 year and 1 week to collect my licence card. My next licences took 7 weeks to 20 weeks to be processed.

Sixth, now you can collect your fully-paid firearm from the dealer with said licence card.

This system is effective at keeping firearms away from mentally corrupt individuals, but it does nothing to stop skinnies getting thier mittens on AKs, R4/5/6 fully auto firearms.

Hope this paints a picture of what we have to go through hare in SA.

Here are a few FN's/R1's that where for sale at a local place a few months ago for $1100. They put a block in it to stop you from switching it to full auto, my friend bought a G3 from them for $630, you can't switch it to full auto unfortunately.

Tell your friend to look at sportsman's guide. I saw in their catalog today they had some G3 lowers. I don't know the internals of the gun so I'm not sure if there's any compatibility, but it's worth a look. To me they seem to be in original unaltered condition.

As for the admixture, it mostly coreleates with us Puerto Ricans and Cubans, alot of the other islands have more closer ties to the African Slaves that were imported there (Mainly The Bahamas, Jamaica, The Dominican Republic and Haiti, dunno about Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago and the Martin/Maarten islands. What do South Africans think of Americans who come to their country?

South Africa is my favorite foreign country and I've always wanted to go, I just don't want to be one of those stereotypical American tourists that nobody likes. If it helps I'm the product of Dutch immigrants and speak a little Dutch (not much but can hold a conversation as long as they speak slow and are patient with me finding the words).

I've got a friend from high school who was a chubby Filipino guy who played a lot of vidya online with a girl from South Africa and then out of the blue he moved to Pretoria and married her and has been there ever since. I wasn't super close to him and it'd be weird getting in contact with him and asking HAY GUY HOW DID THE LOCALS REACT TO YOU??

I've never seen a Neostead, some of the collectors I mentioned in the other post only collect weird South African guns, theres a guy on a local gun selling website thats always looking for weird obscure prototype stuff. We're probably the country that builds the ugliest most useless guns, the Vektor CR21 that the mercenaries use in the District 9 film also comes up for sale quite often. I watched a Larry Vickers video where he said the gun is super rare or something, but they're not hard to find here, after they didn't sell to the military lots of them were sold to the civilian market.

I contacted Truvelo Armoury about the cost of the Neostead. Something like $2000 USD, came with its own case and what not. They had a little under 2000 of them in stock last I spoke with them (2013).

They have since pulled the Neostead from their website. Not sure if it was just a lack of interest from others or they liquidated them.

Really interested in the Neostead as its just a neat design and concept. Have to imagine its better than the UTAS UTS-15, or the Keltec KSG. So it'd would have been cool to get a hand on it. Weird is that the 12+1 version is legal in Canada, but the 10+1 is prohib because it is a couple of inches too short.
