BRANDISHING i would imagine would involve the courts proving you to have an unholstered firearm in your hand. Without a valid cause or reason to do so in a property outside of your control where you have no explicit permission of the owner to do that.

Let's say I wanted to train for summer/winter biathlon in the nearby national forest. My state is open carry. I want to run along NF roads to designated shooting areas, and then shoot at targets I laid out driving there earlier. Would I expect any trouble to be running along a NF road/trail with a rifle slung to my back? Would it make a difference if it were loaded/unloaded?

The shooting areas nearby in the NF aren't near particularly popular hiking trails anyways, so I don't expect soccer moms to call the cops if they see a guy running around with an SKS on his back.
