If you are anemic and have difficulty using 12ga, or you have a GF/wife/anemic roommate who can't and you expect them to be able to use the weapon go for 20ga. If everyone who can be expected to use it can handle 12, use 12.

Dick's Sporting Goods and Academy both sell Mossberg 500s in 20ga short stock yout" configurations under the "Bantam" designation for about $300. I've also seen Maverick 88s in youth configuration for ~$180 or so.

20g is plenty powerful, 12g just has the benefit of having more pellets when using buck or birdshot.

If you want a dedicated home defense shotgun (which is retarded in a day and age with PCCs and ARs) Just go with 20GA. Plenty of power but with less recoil. Shells are the same price as 12.
