The problem with an 8 gauge shotgun is that they stopped making them over 100 years ago, and back then, highly inefficient black powder was used.

Since no modern-day 8 gauge round exists, and we assume that HALO tech is at least on par with our own, your best bet is to simply take a very efficient home defense round in 12 gauge, and "scale it up" accordingly.

Hornady make some great home-defense ammunition, which is considered one of the leading brands for police and tactical work as well. You can find detailed information on the weight and velocity of the projectile, and calculate from there.

It should be noted that, tungsten pellets would be much deadlier due to increased mass, and that a large and powerful shotgun like that might be larger and therefore fire projectiles at a faster muzzle velocity, meaning that this calculation could easily be off by an order of magnitude. That is more than twice the force required/delivered to target vs steel pellets, so the future shotgun would need to be made out of either very thick steel or some stronger material. Actually no it wouldn't; rifles operate at like 10x the pressure that shotguns do or something, regular hardened steel would be fine.

Still the issue is that that is the force of the full 15 pellets hitting the target at close range, the actual force of the shotgun itself would need to be higher due to the inefficiency inherent in the design.

The shotgun shells used by it were quoted as 8 Gauge 3.5".

In terms of firepower remember its all dependent on how much powder is in it.

But given the equivalence I would guess about 4000 ft-lbs... pretty much the same powder load as a 300 Win Mag.

Also if this shotgun was going to be real and it was going to have Any effect on the covenant forces the projectiles would have to be Armor Piercing Flechettes with a significant diameter (rather than needle-like they would have to be like the equivalent of long .308 caliber rifle bullets).

Otherwise the pellets, no matter how big they were (even 45s) would have no hope of penetrating the body armor the Grunts had, and I severely doubt that it would have any ability to bring down the Elite personal shields (considering how many hits it takes from the assault rifle to bring them down).

The game has it stats at 15 projectiles, with a rather unrealistic spread but if you had a good spreader choke on the gun this can kinda be irrelevant.

Im not sure how you could fit 15 of these in the weapon, because of stacking and honeycomb pattern... flechettes like these would likely be in sets of 7. So I say 14 projectiles is more realistic but its still the same ballpark figure.

Shotgun damage in Halo was overstated (or over-statted) but thats a result of Game Balance.

They could have made the weapon only relevant against Flood by giving it a damage multiplier against them and leaving it with shit damage like the PDW

(and we could say these large caliber flechettes Keyhole alot so they could produce the shredding damage necessary to fuck up Flood zombies).

It would have made it less of an end-all-be-all weapon and give you a reason to choose something else to engage Vehicles/Covenant or whatever.

But whatever, everybody has different ideas about Game Balance.
