You need:
1) A valid, current CA driver's license or ID with your current address on it.
2) A Firearms Safety Certificate, which can be acquired at almost any dealer for $25 after passing a simple multiple choice test. There is a study guide. If you fail you are probably retarded and shouldn't own guns.
3) This shouldn't apply to long guns, but a secondary proof of residency. This is a current government issued document with your name and address. Most commonly a car registration or PG&E utility bill. Some dealers insist on it for all firearm transactions.
