Got my interview with the British army tomorrow.

Wanna go in as line infantry and I've gotta choose a regiment

Thinking of the royal regiment of fusiliers, opinions?

Thin

Which ever one gives you the sharpest spoon.
>>
Learn a bit of Regiment history, do some research on current/past deployments and where you'll be doing your training and for how long and what it will involve.

Oh and look forward to a long application process. With any luck you'll be able to start training in around a year.
>>
>>32507959
Fusiliers aren't issued with spoons as the Lancashire Fusiliers lost the Regimental Silver to the French at Nivelle.
>>
>>32507992

I'm a ex cadet and done training at altcar so hopefully ill get fast tracked.
>>
>>32507948
Have you done your BARB or assessment yet? Not to disrespect any infantry lads, but if youre pretty fit paras might be more interesting, and if you want some skills to be able to work in a particular field down the line maybe consider a techie trade like REME or R Sigs. That said, if you want to be a squaddie, go for it, know a fair few blokes who started off as privates on the line and worked their way up to NCO or got a commission, and they are usually far better than fresh faced younguns straight from sandhurst.
I would tell you to go Scots but thats just me, unless you like rain. Most of the 'ceremonial' appointed regiments like Coldstream & DoL are pretty understaffed from what I hear, not even half strength.
>>
>>32508320

Barb happens at the brief tomorrow.

My last timed run was 9:57 and I'm worried I won't make the 9:30 requirement in training.

I've considered being a techie mainly in construction as a brick layer but I'm generally too stupid to do anything else if I'm honest.

Ceremonial duty sounds like a piss take.
>>
Anyway, anyone who's currently serving got any advice?
>>
>>32508356
Might be wrong but 9:30 is junior entry for paras, infantry is only 12:45(?) so youre doing fine there, 9:57 isnt bad at all mate. Also remember it takes a good number of weeks/months to get your PECs and other shit done so you could likely get that down.
On the assessment run most people bust a gut and do a lot better than their training runs because of the pressure and competition aspect. Uncle was a para and he could run all day but as thick as two short planks. RE or REME arent bad at all and are good skills, but in all honesty youd likely make more as a brickie as a civvie than in uniform, and without having to deal with all the faff that comes with being on base all the time compared to going home every day after work as a civvie builder. Theres always the RLC too, lots of different stuff there.

Good luck on the barb mate, just remember its speed and accuracy, dont hang about for 10 seconds on one question, better to blag that question and move on, better for your score.
>>
>>32508408
Put in the effort, attention to detail because you will get bollocked over the most seemingly insignificant things, dont be a walt or wannabe napoleon, get on with your section even if you hate one of the cunts, watch each others backs, dont be a grass, have fun where possible and sleep whenever you can take it. Varies quite a lot depending on what unit youre in and what role but those should get you through training in one piece.
>>
>>32508455

Junior is 10. But yeah hopefully I can get my fitness up to a point of when I can do 1.5 in the required time.

As a civvie id have no experience and no qualifications. Money isn't an issue and I'm not doing it for the money even though it is a motivation. Thanks for the advice on the rlc ill look into it.

And will do, thanks.
>>
>>32507948
Walk in there and tell him you want to shoot sand niggers in the face.

Worked for me. Granted USMC and the Surge.
>>
>>32508561

Sounds like great advice
>>
>>32508555
Theres a lot of stuff in RE/ME other than a brickie though too, like design teams, combat engineers, manufacturing, maintenance and technician roles, all very rewarding roles im sure. Royal Artillery is another one thats a combat role without frontline straight up soldiering, as is the tankies, where youd also get an HGV licence, driving licence and get to learn lots of cool shit, and if you like your mechanics and engineering working on Challengers would probably be a wet dream.

Dont know you mate but man to man id rather you aimed high and failed than aimed low and didnt realise what could have been. Its late and im a bit drunk though so who knows.
>>
>>32508561
It was probably the fact that you could string two words together without dribbling...
>>
>>32508637

I either want to aim as a pti or a brickie there my two options.

I'm considering the paras from what you've said but id have to revise another regiments history.
>>
>>32508712
Fair enough pal, each to their own. For the paras itd be origin stuff like Pegasus bridge & arnhem (ww2), falklands, n.ireland and a bit of iraq. After your assessment in the interview theyll tell you everything youre able to go into anyway. Pti would be a good gig as well, need to be in pretty good shape though. You can appeal the outcome and retest if you dont make it into the role(s) you wanted.
>>
>>32508800

Thanks for everything man.

You currently serving?
>>
>>32508699
he said he joined the USMC, so either he's lying or started dribbling on the 3rd word
>>
>>32508963
No worries mate, if the threads still up tomorrow drop a line and let us know how you got on.
And not at the moment, decided to take the plunge and get my eyes lasered to stop being a speccy, but the army brass still isnt keen on it so im out of pretty much everything for a few months while I get all the checkups done. Worth it but at the same time bored as all hell. Hence /k/
>>
>>32509140

Fair enough hopefully my eyesight doesn't go wonky.

If its not still up ill make a new thread and hopefully you spot it. It'll be around 3pm gmt
>>
>>32509255
Ahah nah youll be fine, its only if you wanna go UKSF you need eagle eyes. But you definitely didnt hear that from me on an anonymous Himalayan paper-folding forum...
Yeah ill have a scroll through tomorrow around then, best of luck to you mate, remember speed and accuracy in the barb, confidence and collectedness in the interview, youll smash it.
>>
>>32507948
You nevuh gunna carry dat L1A1 bro.
>>
>>32509320

Best of luck with your eyes pal, have done fun doing something that totally isn't UKSF
>>
>>32509330
Hopefully I get to carry a SA80 but ya know

No
>>
How long does the process of joining take?
i was looking at RE c3s
>>
>>32508309
Altcar? Do you know a big fella called Brett?
>>
>>32511472
It depends on their recruitment cycle, but average is at least a few months. Youd go to the careers office, have a chat with them, do your barb there or sometimes at the ATC with assessment, interview, if you beat the entry requirements for RE (i think its like 1.5 miles in under 13:30 or around there) then there will be a few weeks of your pre-employment checks, making sure you arent secretly Osama Bin Hiding, then youll go to your phases. Dependent on the role you could be in phase 1 for a few months at Pirbright (for RE?) And then onto specialist training which could be anything from a few weeks to 6 months dependent on role.
>>
>>32508615
Thanks
>>32508699
I can complete a sentenc
>>32509036
Oh really
>>
>>32508309
>I'm a ex cadet

Ah, don't bring this up post-interview.

Ever.

Rightly or wrongly people view cadets as all talk and no game. You'll only make your life hard by telling people this. Keep it to yourself and use what you know (how to care/iron your kit).

Forget anything else.
>>
>>32511574
This. Even more so for paintball/airsoft in all the milsurp garb, you will quickly earn the nickname 'Mr Mitty'
>>
Good luck man!
I'm enlisting in the guatemalan army reserve as soon as i get back.
>>
Take any spare cadet kit you have to basic training, spares are always handy.
>>
You're an ex cadet, been to altcar so I'd say you're from Merseyside, join the glorious FIGHTING MICKS!
>>
Do you dare to walk in uniform by a Irish Republican zone in north ireland?
Do it and tell me what happens.

What's the process for get laser surgery in the armed forces? Asking because I'm looking to go for Para but I'm a speccy too.
>>
>>32508309
No, don't mention that. If you get asked about being in the Cadets, say that you were and leave it at that. You enjoyed it but you're over it. Don't ever mention it again.

>>32508356
Here's the thing about the run.

You, if you go to Glencorse, will have to do it either around a parade square if the weather is crap (which will add about 40 seconds onto your time) or if you're lucky along the track. If you're in a mong group you'll get beasted in the warm up. If you're in a good group of fine young lads from across the Shire counties then you'll be eased into it. Don't eat a lot of breakfast. One sausage. One.

Practice running distance. Infantry work is difficult, far more difficult than people will let on, and you need to be able to cover mile after mile. Get used to running six miles in around 50 minutes or less.

>>32512082
Do you dare make more walty threads about pretending to be in PIRA, having insider knowledge of CIRA, having fought in the Yugoslav Wars and claiming to have had a shootout with the Parachute Regiment and UVF?
>>
>>32507948
You're going to get a LOT more help on ARRSE.
>>
>>32507948
You're making a massive fucking mistake joining peacetime mate. It's going to be a bore.
>>
>>32507948
Just remember that someone will slot you if you fall asleep on stag and you'll be golden
>>
>>32512082
Yeah cause the only Irish Republicans left are 14 year olds who are trying to impress their grandparents screaming fuck the PSNI and taking photos beside the free Derry sign. Everyone else has moved on. Gerry Adams shook hands with the Queen, no one cares about your sorry movement anymore
>>
>>32512112
12 months out if prior to entry, otherwise, dependent on the correction and your previous eye condition, youll be off pretty much every duty for a good 4, 6 or 8 months if it was a massive correction, with eye check ups every few months until your vision settles.
>>
>>32508007
As a Historian this pleases me.
>>
>>32512082
Uhm, except the fact that anyone who was anyone in the IRA fled to non extradition countries, and all thats left is wannabes and walters as evidenced by yourself. Also nobody walks around in civvie street in kit. Poor bait lad.

Damn, that seems like a pretty fucking long process. What happens with costs? Does the MOD deal with some of the costs for you? I'm pretty sure I heard that somewhere.
>>
>>32512473

Travel costs are reimbursed. When I was going through the process back in 2010 I had to tell them where I'd be taking the train from and they'd arrange the tickets themselves and send them to me. Not sure how it works these days though, I imagine it's slightly easier.
>>
>>32512699
Oh ok, cheers mate. Do you mean travel to and from where the eye surgery place is? How far did you have to travel to get to it? And if it's close to where I am, will they still pay for transport?
>>
>>32512765

I don't know about the eye surgery place, I imagine that it's not reimbursed if they haven't specifically ordered you to do it.

That being said, I have a wonky eye which they wanted checked out. They sent me from London to an RAF eye doctor in Birmingham. That was reimbursed, of course.

Generally anything they specifically require you to do is reimbursed, you may have to ask though.
>>
>>32512813
Oh fair enough. Thanks.
>>
>>32514082
Anywhere you get sent by HM Forces will include tickets for travel to the nearest train station. They'll email you a code, you put that code in at the train station or if you live in the middle of nowhere just give it to the person working at the station.

That applies to applicants, too. If you have to go somewhere it will be sorted out.
>>
>>32514289
That's actually quite surprising. I'd have thought that they would make you pay. Nice to know.
>>
