2010 - Britian declares the wonderful, ground-breaking, combat-proven, highly useful Harrier aircraft redundant and sells its entire fleet to the USMC for £115m to be used for spare parts. They sit slowly rusting in the desert, including brand new airframes and recently upgraded aircraft. For less than the price of a single F-35B which was intended to replace it. And still hasn't appeared yet.

Meanwhile the new British "supercarriers" have no aircraft because the F-35B is so late and is underwhelming even if it works as advertised, which it probably won't.

Gee, if only Britain had some jump-jets to fly off its carriers.
>>
Christ what a pointless whine.

How can you have nothing better to do with the last day of the holiday.
>>
>>32503621
They haven't done anything right since September 3, 1783.
>>
>>32503621
Don't forget the L85 and General Montgomery.
>>
>>32503621
The whole fleet of British Harriers would cost a hell of a lot more than a single F35B just in maintenance. The F35B is finished, and if you've read actual pilot reports and not ausairpower you would realize the F35 beats all other planes in air combat except the F22.

Not like those carriers were doing anything

>General Montgomery.
You mean that guy who defeated the Axis and threw them out of an entire theater of the war? Headed up three huge amphibious invasions? Pulled the US army's head out of its arse at The Bulge? That General Montgomery?
>>
>Meanwhile the new British "supercarriers" have no aircraft

Because they're not built yet?

Because the UK isn't due to have an F-35 squadron till 2019?

You might as well be screaming at a pile of eggs, flour and sugar as to why they're not a cake yet.

nowings here

is there anything a harrier can do better than a dedicated heli/fighter/CAS thingy?
>>
>>32503909
Thats when they surrendered to the colonies :^)
>>
>>32503982
Eh, Empire 2: Naval Boogaloo is where the Brits really shone though. They wouldn't reach the height of their power for another century.
>>
Sure it was a shame they did it with the cash shortage, they had to choose between the Harrier and the Tornado. The more capable Tornado's they kept have been working hard in; Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq and Syria while there hasn't been a desperate need for STOVL aircraft or a carrier.

Meanwhile, the USA have been bro's and the USN is helping keep the RN crews trained in carrier operations before the new ones are in service, while the USMC is going to operate out of the carriers once they are.

It's not ideal, but it is going to work out.

Just because business is slow right now doesn't make it that much less stupid.

You must have such a simple head on those shoulders if you think MANAGING A BUDGET SO YOU CAN BUY A BETTER AIRCRAFT is the same as SELLING YOUR CAR FOR FUEL

>2010 - Britian declares the wonderful, ground-breaking, combat-proven, highly useful Harrier aircraft redundant and sells its entire fleet to the USMC for £115m to be used for spare parts.

1. The harrier is nothing special in 1991+19

2. The sale was not to make money, it was to save money, look at the operating costs of aircraft carriers and aircraft

3. It was during the largest financial crisis the world has seen

>They sit slowly rusting in the desert, including brand new airframes and recently upgraded aircraft.

What the USMC do with their aircraft is of no interest to the UK, no doubt the USMC will have removed engines and avionics for parts in currently flying aircraft

>For less than the price of a single F-35B which was intended to replace it. And still hasn't appeared yet.

F35B is still on the same time schedule and budget that was around in 2010.

>Meanwhile the new British "supercarriers" have no aircraft because the F-35B is so late and is underwhelming

They are still being built and fitted out, why would they need aircraft now? The first deployment is in 2020. By which time they will have had access to the jets for two years.

>Gee, if only Britain had some jump-jets to fly off its carriers.

If only we had an island with a runway within strike distance of the whole middle east. If only we could have spent the last 6 years operating more capable aircraft from such a place.

This thread stinks of the taig that got BTFO in the IRA thread.

Harries is 1st gen VTOL, sickening amount of compromises for the VTOL ability makes it an all around meh jet
>>
>>32504425
>It was during the largest financial crisis the world has seen
... Yes, without any doubt.
>>
>>32503958
In 1991 it was the best CAS platform available, it was operating from roads in Kuwait and could be in the air and over a target in minutes.

1991 was the last gasp for the harrier. Since then more capable platforms have taken over and its unique ability to operate away from airstrips has become surplus with the fall of the soviet union.
>>
>>32504395
?
If the motorpool has nothing to do for the next few years, yea it can scrap its current old af inventory then buy new stuff

What super carriers?

They aren't built either and aren;t being rolled out till 2020, also we still have plenty of harriers in storage.

Finally VTOL aircraft don't make much sense for a modern force and the wars we fight, fuck knows why we are getting vtol f35s as they are inferior in every way to the standard f35s.
>>
>>32506337

> fuck knows why we are getting vtol f35s as they are inferior in every way to the standard f35s.

They're still by a significant margin the 2nd best maritime fighter out there.

If you went for the "standard" F-35, then they can't take off from carriers at all ya doof.

Hm, thats strange. Could have sworn we taught English here, but here you are, unable to do even the slightest bit of research before you run your stupid pie hole.
>>
>>32506337
Not the OP, but VTOL has it's purpose. They can operate in areas where building fuckhuge runways isn't feasible. They can also operate from smaller ships (relatively speaking) like WASP Class LHDs. They have a niche role.
