There are specific rules against flash suppressors in CA, but a slightly modified Springfield M1A is a good choice.

Of course, if you're getting a gun for home defense rather than for range time you should get a shotgun. But the M1A is a great rifle.

What is your budget, OP? What do you want it for? Home defense? To go shooting at a range?

I'd say get a rifle. Fuck shotguns, you can get those later after you have a bit of variety. Unless you enjoy skeet shooting there's no point in getting one as your first gun. Muh home defense fags can fug off. You'll get the shotgun and let it gather dust in a corner, at least with a rifle you can take it to the range now and then.

Buy a lever action .45-70

.45-70 is the only government you can trust. The rounds are easy to hand load, you can make em hot and shoot for distance, or light and plink all day. Its a damn good gun, and a hell of a lot more useful than a shotgun.

Some Kel Tec SU-16 rifles are legal in CA. They take AR-15 mags and are semi auto, but some people say the build quality isn't so good.
