Are they really that good, or are they just a glorified, foreign equivalent of the marine corps?
Their training is more rigorous than the USMC, as far as I know.
bump for interest
Certain parts of it are good, but there's plenty of 3rd-worlders who just join for the food, money, and passport and don't give a shit about proper soldiering.
The 2 REP(parachute regiment) is considered the most prestigious and strict. It's where most of the prior service guys from first world countries end up. They usually get the top combat assignments that come up for the Legion. The 3 REI in French Guiana is also held in high regard. They are generally considered some of the best jungle fighters in the world and operate one of the best jungle warfare schools. Unfortunately they are secluded in South America and don't really see legitimate combat too often. Their last combat deployment was in Haiti in 2004.

Remember that time in 1941 where the FFL units were fighting each other and knew it? Yeah, classy fighting force there.

They had reasonable disagreements considering the overall situation. FFL vs. DeGaulle after he gave away Algeria was even more interesting.

Did you even read the rest of the post?
is it true that service in the ffl is considered as valuable as sf for pmc employers?
>>32496832
Depends on which PMC. The ones that do most of their business in Africa love ex-legionnaires because they speak french(like half the continent) and have usually had at least one deployment to some African shithole so they are already familiar with the environment. American based PMCs that operate in the mid-east: not so much unless you have other experience in addition to the Legion.
It's worth pointing out though that global demographics are shifting, and Africa is undoubtedly going to become a very busy theatre for PMC operations in the coming decades.

Is fluency in French and prior military experience the only requirements for employment in an Africa-based firm?
>Africa is undoubtedly going to become a very busy theatre for PMC operations in the coming decades.
What's the reason for this?

Black people. The average sub-saharan IQ is 2 standard deviations below average. Enough smart ones to realize they need good fighters, too many dumb ones to form competent 1st-world military units.

Muslim infestation.
