Hitler did nothing wrong. I don't think they were expecting just how much aid the US and allies were pumping into the soviets. If it hadn't been for that aid then the Germans could have taken Moscow and secured a victory in the East

I'm no expert, but it seems odd to me that the Germans would tie up so many resources fighting along the black sea when they could have piled all their strengh into a single thrust towards Moscow, taking the city and intersecting every line of communication in the country.

The war would be over at that point, the USSR would split into several disorganised states to be annexed or ignored later on.

If they hadn't fought along the black sea they wouldn't have been able to secure the oil resources and they would have also been put at risk of a counter campaign to cut off German/Axis forces from the main force that would be driving North East

They were evolved enough then, Napoleon was just shit at it. His strategy was for his army to loot everything they needed. That doesn't work when everything is being destroyed by defenders. The same thing happened during the Peninsular War.
