While most of that story sounds like bullshit anyways, that ending is what made it utterly undeniable the story is fake. In divorce court, the mother can literally be shooting up dope every day in front of the kid and the judge will still give her 60 days to get clean before the kid is taken away. It is next to impossible for custody to be taken away from a mother and given to the father.

Source: myself. My parents divorced when my sis and I were little (3 and 7, respective). Mom was a cheater, but otherwise not unfit, not a user, etc. Difference is, Dad has money, mom does not. Dad lawyered up with a team, while mom got a phonebook lawyer. Dad won custody, no support, no alimony. Mom got the house, had to go back to school to restart her career.

I love my mom, but Dad did the right thing.

I love my mom because she's my mom.
She met someone else while Dad was on deployment. Told him when he got back, he left her, she married the Jody, and now nearly 30 years later the asshat is still my stepdad.
I love my mom. I don't love what she did, and I hate the effete, guitar-playing liberal pussy she did it for.

Still makes me smile a bit remembering the night Dad dropped her off at his house, broke his jaw, and caught the next flight to my family's hometown.

As far as the other thing goes, I don't know what to tell you guys. Your mom is your mom. You don't get to stop loving her because she did a shitty thing. Not like she gave up on getting custody, either. She fought tooth and nail, just lost anyways. Then moved across the country, got a ghetto fleabag apartment and a minimum wage job, went back to school to be a schoolteacher just so she could see us tuesdays and thursdays after school.
She's not an inherently bad person. Just did a bad thing.
