Is it fixed? A folder? Straight or serrated? There are obviously varying opinions but is there at least a general consensus? Taking into account factors like the type of steel, blade retention, length, etc, can we resolve this once and for all?

What the article doesn't mention is that the original inspiration for the knife came from a puukko carried by Ilmari Honkanen. Randall knife is only a (smaller) part of the story.

A Finnfag here.

I propose our M95 or M07. Very tough fine grain steel, very tough knife. A tool for chores the first and the last, and a weapon in the middle.

A well designed sheath you can attach in you kit the way you want.

You can quickly sharpen it to cleanly cut kevlar reinforced ropes. You can also quickly sharpen it to shave. Me and my buddies once shaved our shadows with our sissipuukkos like with a straight razor. Obviously we used soap as well.

I have hammered it more than halfway through a 5" birch tree trunk, then using a steel pipe around the handle for lever I pryed the tree down.

I absuloutely highlight it's value as a sturdy bushcraft tool, and the well designed sheath.
>>
>>32494449
I'm not going to argue the M95's value, but wouldn't you say that it's more of a bushcraft knife? I don't know much about it but has it been proven in combat?

I nominate the KM4000
This is a German combat knife (Kampf Messer). It has multiple uses such as a saw, sharpener, hammer, and wire cutter. The saw uses the backside of the knife so it doesn't take up space. It's a very thick knife, the man testing it even hammered it into a tree and stood on it. It remained unbent. https://youtu.be/nc6mD3z3Q_E

The blade was originally made with the same machines, out of the same blanks and in the same place as the bayonet of RK 62. There are only minor changes to the blade. It's not strictly a fighting knife but that's what makes it so great.

Finka :)

Seriously, a Finka is a brutal design. It's base design stems from Finnish puukko which was adopted by Russians, who then modified it bigger and more badass gangsta street fighter blade. It gained notoriety to a point that if you were detained with a Finka on you, you were thrown in the jail on the spot.

There are stories that NR-40 is in fact a compilation of Russian finka designs which then were adopted as this Russian military combat knife.

>Ontario 499

Those things suck. The tangs are pitiful and the sawteeth are useless.

I don't collect knives, I use them, and the Ontario 499 is a bad utility knife with little to recommend it as a fighting knife. Mine didn't even survive Air Force POGshit like opening a bunch of crates which is where I bent the tang. I think the 499 was intended at a pilot pacifier to fill survival kits and I wouldn't want one there, either.

Blade is rigid enough to crack light Nam era prop job aircraft windows, a consideration with survival knives. Remember birds like O-2 didn't have ejection seats.

If someone gave me another 499 I'd gift it to one of my collector bros after warning him how much they suck.

KA-BAR also has weak tangs. I killed one of those, too.

If you can't beat the fuck out of a war knife it isn't fit for war. That includes using it as a pry bar, chisel on soft metals, and other harsh utility use.

Karambit is too short to stab deeply, especially through cloting, and poorly designed for typical military utility work.

I can see why the Yarborough knife is popular.
>>
>>32495849

While the design is brutal it is basically also a total sperg of knives. Finnish puukko is primarily a utility knife and excellent at that - and what the soldiers usually really need. Russkies tried to develop it as a combat knife, which is just fucking crazy, since a solid utility knife will do that as well if ever (rare to extreme) needed. As for quality - Russian quality control is often at such (sub-standard) level that I would most rather pick a Finnish product.

It's definitely not a heavyweight, that's for sure. The original saw back was for cutting through the aluminum fuselage if you had to, and you're right on all other accounts. Back in the day these things were like 10 bucks and you could lash them down all sorts of ways for airborne stuff and was just a cheap alternative to the KA-BAR.

They did better with the SP2.
>>
>>32496708
He my 499 for 8 years, of hard use. Regranted the blade and cut off the back of the finger guard. Been in tones of camping, hunting, hiking, fishing trips since then. I've moved on to a TOPS BOB, much better of a knife. MUCH better. But for the money the 499 is fine
>>
>>32496167
>victorinox farmer or gtfo
>>
>>32496795
I worked on OV-10 Broncos and that saw is a joke for cutting Nam ara light aircraft skin. I actually tried sawing different shit including some aluminum with mine in Desert Shield because I wanted to see if the knife had any redeeming value.

Someone with a mandrel and grinding discs could cut that back into a MUCH better saw, but there seems to be a design requirement that all knife saws/serrations will suck or be of such tiny length that a good edge doesn't save them.

There's enough metal for someone to have fun customizing one and the non-collectible versions are cheap.

Calm down homie. Russians can do things great/right if only they set their minds on it.

True for one thing though, Finnish puukkos were utilitarian (which is the whole purpose of the tool in the first place), they were made of excellent steel and they took a very good edge. I dare to say that every Russian who uses knifes knows the names of Marttiini, Iisakki Järvenpää, Lapinleuku and maybe even Pohjanmaa, Kainuu and Savo. Whatever and how might be, our Russian neighbours really truly liked our knives. Maybe partly WW2 and Winter War legend, but absolutely mostly practical approach towards an utilitarian design.

And then, they wanted to channel the lore of them, some in good way and some in intimidating fighthing form (the ganstas doing gansta shit in particular), and that's how the concept of Finka was born. Much bigger than a puukko but still having the pedigree features.

USAF pilot survival knife. I've had mine since I bought it in the 1980s at now-defunct Reese AFB in the commissary when my regular army uncle recommended it while visiting between deployments. It's a little brute, and the blade length of just under 6" is prefect. Stacked leather washer handles don't get slippery when wet. And the pommel makes a good hammer. Get the Camillus.

Gerber makes some great stuff. For example this bad boy has a ceramic coated blade, glass filled nylon handle coated in textured rubber, a glass breaker, and comes with a nice polymer sheath. Leaves nothing to be desired, yet pretty cost effective.

They do get a lot of hate because the Bear Grylls line fucking sucked, but it was meant to be Walmart priced so it makes sense.

Is slashing really enough? I've seen firsthand that cuts, through clothing, tend to just escalate the aggression of the injured person, which is absolutely not what I want. I image that a deep stab wound would end their ability to give chase better than some cuts.

Pohjanmaa, Kainuu and Savo are old provinces - from which Pohjanmaa is known for its puukko-manufactures, the others not so much.

As for "Finka" being bigger, there have always been puukko-knives in multitude of size and shapes geared towards specific uses. Here link to "iso-Ilves" aka Ilves 150 by Marttiini, it has 22-cm/8.7-inch blade and was one of the most Finnish knives among soldiers during World War 2:

>>
>>32500587
For starters, you don't want to lose control of the knife. I was always told if someone was coming at me with one, let them stab through my hand to gain control. Your goal would be to really cover as much surface area as possible with slashes and pokes to really overwhelm his nerves, with the adrenaline going I doubt someone in a dark alley would really notice a deep stab wound right off, but a dozen or so punctures would send a message. I recall a story of one lady just straight up slashing down a guy's leg, mostly superficial but all the blood really put him off.
