The Free Syrian Army was always just a small fraction of the random group of rebels we were arming most of whom were jihadis who ended up joining ISIS or Al Nusra. The FSA is completely defunct at this point and many of its fighter has joined the Jihadis.

As fucked up as it sounds, our intelligence agencies actually predicted an ISIS like caliphate might arise in eastern Syria and actually considered it a positive step towards defeating Assad.

That's the big flaw in Obama's strategy and part of why the left is so freaked out. They were betting everything on Clinton's coronation going smoothly because it would be extremely easy for an uncooperative president to put 8 years of work through a woodchipper. A year of $55/Barrel says otherwise (world bank forecast). Russian population decline has been an issue since the early 2000's. Fertility rate is at 1.777, they lose ~170k citizens per year due to emigration (in a country of 144 million). And while the brain drain isn't as bad as it was after the fall, their universities aren't what they used to be (and its rumored that their figures are false, and that the numbers are higher, there was an article in the Moscow times about it).
