Just found this picture browsing the internet. I think Colt is poised to reenter the double-action revolver market for the first time since 1998.

They're resurrecting the Colt Cobra in .38 Special. It's not the Python but god damn I've been wanting a new Colt double-action forever.
>>
theyre scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to avoid going into bankruptcy again.

new cobra, new delta elite, i wonder what else they have up their sleeve.

I welcome the return of their DA revolvers, there's no reason why they should've discontinued all of them in the first place.

They still have the Python tooling and spare parts mothballed at their manufacturing plant.
>>
>>32477749
Got a link or anything else to go on? I'd love to see them reenter the market.
>>
>>32477794
>They still have the Python tooling and spare parts mothballed at their manufacturing plant.
No, they dont.
Also Pythons required a tremendous amount of hand fitting.
>>
>>32477804
Here a article from TTAG, they speculated that his might be a pre-release ad for SHOW show 2017.

I hope they do the 1903's again, but don't fuck it all up like they did last time they made new ones
>parkerized
The person who had that idea should be killed.
Also hope they do 1908's.
>>
>>32477814
Why do you think they would just scrap all that expensive tooling for.
>>
>>32477749
That looks exactly like their D Frame SV-IV/Detective Special II but they slapped the 'Cobra' name on it.
>>
>>32477841
And people will eat it up. They don't even have the talent to produce quality revolvers anymore, either they are farming it out or it's going to be a rough gen1.
>>
>>32477749
>It's not the Python

They DO realize that they could leapfrog Smith and Wesson just by bringing the big snake back, right?

Bankruptcy? Schmankruptcy, I'm talking about becoming a market leader, here, bringing in enough new cashflow to jumpstart development on new semi-autos so they can chase the law enforcement market, etc.
>>
>>32477887
The problem is that they more than likely scrapped the tooling for their DA revolvers in the late 90s. And then they'd have to redesign the Pythong since it was built using handfitting, but I could see them reintroduce the Anaconda with relative ease since it was designed to be built on CNC machinery.

to get in a price bracket to even think about being competitive with smith, they'd end up taking a massive hit with each gun sold and just sink further into the black hole of dosh.
>>
>>32477894
Whatever it costs to bring it back, they would make it back in the first 6 months of sales. I'm not even a wheelgun guy (or pistol guy, for that matter) and I would buy one just because they're so fucking a e s t h e t i c.
>>
>>32477929
Let's be completely honest here.

It's a fucking new-build Python.

They could price them at $1300 starting and they'd still be on backorder for the first few years.
>>
If they're steel I'd buy one easy.
>>
>>32477749
Awesome
Hopefully they're not going to shit it up like they did with the 1908's
I've honestly been looking for a small, compact 6 round revolver

One great thing about it is that there's already a bunch of aftermarket grips and holsters

nope. they decided to be typical colt jews with it and do a limited edition custom run that looked like ass
Remington tried to reintroduce the r51 and fudged that as well. Nobody is going to risk reintroduction 100 year old pistols from a by gone era now, not when you can keep doing that with 1911s anyway and making the newest glock clone
>>
>>32478006
When do you turn 21, Anon? I turn 21 on the 29th of next month. I originally wanted to buy a Hi-Power but they're $800-$1000 and that's a little out of my price range.

I'll probably just settle for a Glock 19.
>>
>>32477749

Not only that, the import mark really sticks out on them.
>>
>>32477831
Because it was old and getting worn out and needed to be scrapped or replaced, and at the time ceasing Python production apparently seemed like a good idea so they went with the former.

>>32478054

wat?

yes they were
>>
>>32478270
Except they don't have CNC production tooling for them. From what I've read new production Pythons would cost more than the $3000 that the old ones go for.
>>
>>32478213
I just compared two picture of a Python and Anaconda together and they're both pretty similar.

Or, you know, they could just redesign the Python to be produced on CNC machinery.
>>
>>32478348
>just redesign the Python to be produced on CNC machinery
That sounds like work, though.
>>
>>32478362
It'll be work to make tooling to produce the Anaconda again too.
>>
MEDUSA WHEN
>>
>>32478398
Production was stonewalled.
>>
>>32478376
Scaling down the Anaconda also has the benefit of preserving the market for old Pythons, since a lot of purists would get their panties in a twist over the new ones "just" being .357 Anacondas, whereas redesigning it from scratch wouldn't trigger autists nearly as badly.
>>
>>32477969
Doubtful. What makes snake guns desirable is hand fitting. I have a colt trooper from the handfitting era. Same lockwork, same gunsmiths, same handfitting as the oh so precious pythons. My smith from the 70s is better.

There seems to be some misinformation in this thread. In particular:

>muh hand-fitting

The reason why the Python has as much hand-fitting as it did was partially because it was Colt's Rolls-Royce but mainly because the outdated lockwork and production methods involved in its production process entailed that degree of hand-fitting.

For those of you who are not aware, the double-action lockwork used in the Python was a licensed copy of the Schmidt-Galand revolver action from the fucking 1880s. The Schmidt-Galand lockwork, while fine for its time, is unnecessarily complicated and structurally fragile compared to the lockwork of any modern double-action revolver. This is the reason why the lockwork of Korths and Manurhins, both of which are made to the highest standards possible for a revolver and are overall much superior to the Python in function, takes its cues from the lockwork of Smith and Wesson revolvers rather than Colt revolvers. It's also why the Python was/is more prone to having timing problems and other issues than any of its contemporaries.

Any modern reproduction of the Python is probably going to have completely different lockwork and will be redesigned to be compatible with production on CNC tooling. It will look the same on the outside but is very likely to be a completely different (and hopefully better) snake on the inside. The only problem here is Colt itself. Given how pathetic their copy of the Pocket Hammerless was, I don't expect them to do a good job with resurrecting the Python. The only way I could see it being decent in the end would be if it was a Custom Shop-only item, and the price tag it would end up carrying if that were the case would make it a poor choice compared to just buying an MR73 instead.
>>
>>32478672
How much trouble is it to find an MR73 in decent shape?
>>
>>32477749
>I think Colt is poised to reenter the double-action revolver market for the first time since 1998
>1998

Jesus, why'd it take them this long to make DA revolvers again?
>>
>>32478638
Worse than HK.

For decades, Colt didn't bother with research and development, ignored advances and changing market trends in firearms technology, neglected to establish apprenticeships/training pathways to sustain the levels of skilled machinists/assemblers/craftsmen that they needed, and sidelined the civilian market in favor of military contracts.

They believed they could sell their products forever without the need to worry about innovation, competition, or quality simply because of their company name. The result? Such fine products as the Colt All-American and the loss of the M4 Carbine contract.
>>
>>32478672
So how did they make new Pocket Hammerlesses? Did they make them on original tooling or what?
>>
>>32478516
S&W 686 has one
>>
>>32478746
Colt has been on full-retard for the past 20 years and how they manage to never actually cease to exist is mindblowing to me.
>>
>>32478727

>>
IDK why everyone here is thinking this is a new python somehow. The last python to ever be built, as in they've run entirely out of parts, was put together in 2014. Whatever this is may be of high quality but if they actually hand fit everything and do all the fancy stuff they did with the python the price will be astronomical.
>>
>>32478727
You can buy a new one by contacting one of the importers and having your name put on a list. It will cost you around $2600+ last I checked (consider that a new Colt SAA will run you $1500 minimum). You will then receive it whenever the next run is finished and shipped from the Chapuis factory. They make two batches a year IIRC.

Some of the importers also sell used ones. You can get a used one that's mechanically sound but that might have cosmetic issues/been reblued for ~$1100.

>>32478746
Double-action revolvers were really out of favor from the early 90s into the 2000s (think how everyone is dumping .40 right now if you want a similar example). They have, for whatever reason, had a sort of upswing in interest and market share for whatever reason. I suspect it is as more of the younger guys find out that Glocks, while good, are not the alpha and omega of handguns.

>>32478791
From what I remember, they were made by another company on CNC tooling and licensed by Colt. The problem with the new Pocket Hammerless isn't like what happened with the R51 in that it simply didn't work; its problem was that it was an unaesthetic and inaccurate reproduction (it had horrible and cheap-looking parkerization rather than the nickel or beautiful deep blue of the originals) on top of costing over $1000.

Who the hell is going to fork over $1000 for an inferior copy when an original can easily be found in the $500-$800 range?

That built in retainer in the cylinder.

So many people have wanted an M47 that if Colt started making a modernized equivalent it would sell LIKE IHOP.

And make it capable of taking moon clips at the same time, geez that sounds like christmas.

A price that would get a lot of people to move on a new Python would be a street price (not MSRP) of ~$950 +/-$50. Even a lot of people who think revolvers are "gay fudd shit" would probably consider it at that price, and it would get a lot of people who've wanted a Python but don't want to pay collector prices to run out and order one immediately. It would be theoretically possible for them to make a profitable Python at this price point as well if the new Python was engineered in such a fashion that it could be reliably manufactured while needing a minimum amount of hand-fitting to function properly.

Knowing Colt though, they'll probably get greedy and charge $2000+ because that's what the old ones are going for and then end up canning the new ones after a few years due to alleged lack of interest.
>>

Well, Colt WAS going to do something with the design. Keyword here WAS. Back in 1999 some gun mag or internet form showed off a pre-production revovler called the Colt Survivor. It was in a sense a Medusa clone in that it reused the cylinder from the Medusa but used a Colt frame.

Sadly, Colt exited the double-action revolver market in 1999 and the Survivor was cancelled after one pre-production gun was made.

I don't think this dishwater not detective will sell.

No underlug is the real Colt style
>>
>>32480519

The reason older Colt's are nicer is because prior to CNC technology coming out in the late 70's, everything was done by hand. You had machinists turning raw forgings into completed frames and slides, master crafstmen polishing edges and contours by hand, and workers fitting parts by hand. That kind of operation just isn't profitable in today's day and age, especially at the pricepoint for Colt. If they maintained that same level of hand work, they would be $2000+ easy. They still do some of the work by hand though at the factory, most of the polishing job on the bluing and flats of the slides is still done by union craftsmen.
>>
>>32480524
Kinda like how Nintendo had to make a ad telling people that the Wii U was different from the Wii.
>>
>>32480469
How many new production Colt 1911's have you handled? Please tell me why the hell I should pay $1.900 for something like a Colt Special Combat Gov't when I can buy a Dan Wesson Valor or Specialist for less, or even a Les Baer. I would get a significantly better gun, in all aspects, in both cases. That's just one example, pick nearly anything they make and I'll show you another manufacturer doing it better. The fit and finish on the Colts is dogshit compared to their competition. Hell even Kimber, who has had slipping quality for years now, (and produces way too many variants of the same gun over and over) has better fit & finish than Colt. If Colt was doing anything right their competition wouldn't exist.
>>
>>32480648

I don't know why you would pay $1900 for any stock 1911 pistol and you would be stupid to seeing as you could take a Series 70 Colt and build it into the same pistol for $800 less than that. Probably even less if you surplussed off the parts you were replacing to help cover the costs. I've handled probably more than most people have since I'm that greaseball who goes into gunshops just to finger fuck everything and then buy online. Colt's finish is just fine, as are most other 1911 pistols. but I personally find the Colt rollmarks to more aesthetically pleasing than any others. I'm not trying to argue that Colt is superior to any models, just refuting the common misconception sprouted on /k/ that they are inferior.
