I'm buying a Mosin from a friend for $160 but it's missing it's bayonet and it's not all matching serial numbers. What price you guys think it is. Pic is the rifle itself.
>>
OP here I forgot to mention that it's a 1942 Izhvesk
>>
What are you buying it for? To have a fun shooting gun or to have a collectible piece? If the former, then the serials don't matter and the price is average. If the latter, it's no good.
>>
>>32473098
sure, why not, not like you'll get anything better for $160 ever.
>>

I've started looking recently into naval warfare, especially "future" armaments and while it's obvious that people are moving away from large deck guns to missiles (for range and controllability ect) it seems odd to me that nobody has utilised a super fast projectile mechanism yet. railguns are currently out due to the ware on the rails but light gas guns have existed in physics labs for years and a projectile going 8km/s would surely be impossible to detect let alone intercept? Anyone have any input on this?

Don't be a dick, OP. $160 is a perfectly acceptable price for what your friend is selling.

Market price on Mosins these days is easily above $200.
>>
>>32473847
Why is that even a thing though, firing pins weigh like fucking nothing, for better cooling?

As far as replacement barrels go for the Jericho 941, to my knowledge the newer IWI ones use conventional groove rifling as opposed to polygonal rifling. The only other readily available barrels to my knowledge for this particular gun are those for the Tanfoglio Witness and I actually have no idea whether or not they are polygonally or conventionally rifled. Anyone with a Tanfoglio able to shed some insight?
>>
>>32479325
They don't ship to the US without some dicksucking. If it's an old 941 buy a parts jericho with a good barrel. If it's polymer then email IWI.

Cabela's sells them in "unissued" condition (pre-war with hex receiver) with bayonet, sling, oil can, etc for $250. Definitely overpriced, but they exist.

It's just my opinion, but I'd ignore the nugget in favor of a Mauser. You can get a mint condition M48 or M24/47 for ~$300 around me.

I know this question sounds autismal but has anyone used airshit accessories for real firearms? Not anything integral to firing the gun, I'm talking about furniture and maybe even sights or scopes.

I googled and had seen someone using an MP5 folding stock for their GSG .22 clone. I figure it probably held up okay since .22 has no significant recoil, but I'd be wary using anything made for a toy on a more powerful round.

I wouldn't ever normally consider this, but I am looking at some of these "real steel" $100 weaver mount SUSAT clones and considering just picking up one for shits and giggles and if crap then return/sell it.

It's a horrible gun for backpacking. It's long and heavy. If you were being charged by an apex predator with a particular appetite for human kidneys, you'd be fucked.

A large caliber handgun or a carbine would be a much better choice.

Hey I'm looking at getting a Mosin too. 91/30.
It's $450 with the bayonet, sling, and cleaning kit, apparently unfired since refurbishment. I believe they are all Izevsk of 1943.

For a similar price ($750), I can get a Howa 1500 mini action in 223 with a sporter barrel, and Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 scope.

Not sure which is a better choice, or if I should even go for a Howa 1500 in a heavy barrel instead

I live in Australia. Almost ever firearm, new or second hand, is $400+ unless it's a 100 year old piece of shit. But thanks senpai.

As far as barrel thickness, is a sporter barrel fine, or should I get a varmint (heavy) barrel?

Do you plan to hunt or target shoot? If hunt get sport for making carrying not a bitch. If target do varmint for better accuracy.

I'm not sure it would be bad for backpacking, especially if you intend on taking some game while you are out. But for cougar defense? No. if you are being threatened by a cougar it is going to be very close and a Mosin is going to be extremely unwieldy within 20 yards against a fast moving big cat.

For just shooting $160 isn't all that bad.

Shooting at an indoor range, got to shoot a 1911 for the first time.
I have experience with other handguns, I've handled a 1911 before, just never got to shoot it.

When I'm shooting the 1911, I handle it just fine, like any other handgun I've used.

But sitting down on the bench a few feet away watching my friend use it, I always flinch(blinking my eyes) when he shoots.

Is this fine? Just kinda bothers me how I only flinch when I'm not using the 1911.

I have a completely fucked question.

So this lady I know, she has to go back. However, she is married to a green card holder. He has three guns, a revolver he had before they married, and a shotgun and a rifle that he bought after. However, he is a domestic abuser (probably always been) and generally fucked in the head due to oxygen depravation to the brain during major surgery, which has severely exacerbated things. Recently he came in to her room when she was sleeping and beat her on the back of the head, causing a concussion.

We are all deep behind enemy lines in California. She (probably correctly) fears for her life. California will gladly come in, shoot her dogs, and confiscate all the weapons no questions asked, as per some recent shitty laws. If he is convicted for domestic assault in the near future, they'll probably confiscate them all then too. But they are hard up for money, and she knows the state won't reinburse anything. She would rather sell the guns to me, as I'd at least pay, but all firearm transfers must be done through an FFL here, and the legality of it all seems to be extremely fucking bonkers.

Hello /k/, new shooter here, got some questions.
I finally got the chance to try my first gun, a new Weatherby Vanguard S2 .308 with a Zeiss Conquest DL 3-12x50 scope.
At 100 meters, I shot GGG 147 gr FMJ, with a near gale blowing from 10 o'clock in relation to the target.

I had no high expectations and really just wanted to get the scope sighted in, but I ended up adjusting 29 clicks UP (About 10 MOA) and 36 clicks LEFT (About 12.5 MOA) before I got it to hit center.

Is this normal? It seems like a lot of adjustment, "spending" a lot of clicks I could have, err, "saved" if I wanted to shoot at longer ranges, all to get it working at a range as short as 100 meters. (The turrets can be adjusted 65 clicks in either direction). To clarify, I am mostly worried about the upwards adjustment, as I reckon the fierce wind might have some part in my having to adjust left. Or...?
Could it be that the scope mounts aren't adjusted well enough?

Pic related, the rifle, scope and ammo.

Cougar defense is tricky. I try and position myself tactically near light-switches if I find myself in a low-light environment, like a bar. Assuming I don't have my 1000 lumen, Fenix PD35 on me. I find myself vulnerable to cougars only in low-light environments. If they sense their wrinkles are visible, they will avoid an attack.

I'm not really into the Mosin sub-culture/community at all so I'm pretty out of the loop... but has the value increased at all?

I got mine during a deal at Cabela's probably 6-7 years ago now. It was $100, came with a bayonet and most of the original field kit -- can't remember exactly but standard issue Russian stuff like a tin of cosmoline, some spare gas-mask carts. , etc. A little beat up but in fine shape. Are people really paying well over $100 for these now?

'bout $150-250.

Stuff increases in price over time. It's like how your grandpa used to buy sodas for a nickle.

I took my new FEG Hi-Power out to the range today and had a failure to extract. I fired 100 rounds of Federal Champion 115gr FMJ and it as my only failure.

Is it normal for this to totally shake my confidence in the pistol?

I've owned 20 other guns and have never had a failure to extract. Having to lock the gun open and strip the mag is not something I want to have to do often at the range or even once in a defensive encounter.

FWIW the gun is mechanically like-new as far as I can tell. It's barely had any ammo through it. I ordered a Wolff spring kit, hoping the included extractor spring will fix the issue, but I already don't trust the gun.

A while back my mom found out im hasgunz and freaked. She took my gun away and said she'd give it back when I graduate college.

However I found out my mom lost my god damn pistol. She claims that she knew where she put it and is assigning the blame to one of my uncles saying he took it because she is sure of where she placed.

My mom loses shit all the time so I'm doubtful that my uncle did indeed steal a firearm from his own family. I wouldn't be surprised if he did but I'm leaning more towards my moms forgetful persona.

I already reported it missing to the authorities.
They asked me if I wanted to press charges against my uncle but I declined because I'm not sure it was him.

This was a bit back but I'm getting more and more frustrated about what occurred and I really want to get my gun back.

If I press charges, can the police search his place for it? Because if so I'm thinking about doing so...

I've already searched my house but nothing has turned up.

Please spare my the lectures, I just want to get my shit back. It was my first gun.

>$13.00 gas tube
>$26.00 FSB
>$8.00 Front sight post
>$50.00 carbine stock kit
>$85.00 Weekend deal BCG and CH
ending up at $211.94

Anderson

>$4.00 triangle end cap

Anderson Lower and lower parts kit and upper from Brownell's
>$174 (shipping twice cuz I order too early like a dumby)

Are only closed bolts capable of holding +1 ammo and not open bolt?
Also, what are advantages of open bolts and why are they illegal in US?
>>
>>32506941
Yes. The +1 refers to having one round in the chamber, open bolt guns don't put a round in the chamber until it is fired.

They are very simple to build, maintain and shoot. They are also very easy to turn full auto, which is why the BATFE doesn't like them.

I'm for OC if that's your thing, however you need to think about what people see when they look at you. Most people happen to be of the opinion that the 18-20 year old crowd (that I'm assuming you're a part of) are not the most responsible people in the world. What image are you going to be giving off with a gun on your hip? I'm almost 30, probably look more 35ish and last time I OCd I was wearing slacks and a button up. I still got a couple looks (Portland metro area.) Are you ready to be confronted by some deranged lefty who assumes you're a smart ass kid who doesn't know guns are evil yet? Are you ready for a soccer mom to SWAT your ass cause you're probably on your way to shoot up the closest school? OCing, if done properly, can really help our cause. If you can't handle the shit that you may have to take, which may be more due to your age, are you going to continue to set a good tone out there with a gun on your hip?

Can someone walk me through buying a online?
>Buy gun
>Tell FFL I want gun shipped to them
>They talk to Company
>Company sends it
>It arrives
>I fill out 4473

If i Ordered a lower as part of a larger order, how would it work? Do i say ship everything to the FFL and they hold it?
>>
>>32512334
I usually go to the FFL first and ask their transfer fees so I don't get fucked for $30+ and let them know a package is coming. Place your order, submit address of FFL, wait for phonecall from FFL, pay fee, leave.
>>
>>32512334
Do it in this order:
>find gun you want to buy
>call FFL and ask about having X gun shipped to them
>sometimes they say "I have that in stock for $Y", may or may not be a better deal when you factor in shipping + transfer fee for online firearm
>if you are satisfied with the FFL, they send a copy of their FFL to the online dealer
>online dealer then sends gun to FFL
>you can fill out a 4473 with the FFL before he ever receives the gun, that way if your state had a waiting period, you can pick it up as soon as it arrives
>go to FFL when he says he receives it and (fill out 4473 if you haven't already) pick it up

How useful is a red dot magnifier? Do any of you use one or is it just more tacticool trash?
>>
>>32497179
Tell mom that you are going to call the cops and report the firearm as stolen. You are then going to call her homeowners insurance carrier to file a claim. See if that jogs her memory.

Looking to extend the lop on my norinko SKS. What are some not-garbage pads I can get?
>>
>>32508132
Dude no wonder they call a pistol a "rooty tooty point and shooty" that revolver looks likea fuckin clown gun
>>
I'm trying to get a guy to trade me his extended mag cerakoted 870 for my stock Norinco SKS plus stripper clips, cleaning kit, and aftermarket mag. I kinda want the shottie more than the SKS, but I'm still not sure if I'm jewing myself.

Does the trade seem fair?
>>
>>32515538
Keep the SKS.
>>
>>32515538
if you were to buy the 870 new and do all those mods yourself it would cost more than the sks.
the 870 like all pumps has minimal resale an sks resale is better. if you actually want the modded 870 its a good deal.
however if you want the 870 to sell off later keep the sks.

its fair enough

I have a question about barrel twist rate. There's 1:7, 1:8, 1:9, whatever.

I was wanting to know, is it possible to have a barrel where the twist rate starts at 1:9, and slowly turns into a twist rate of 1:7, and would that make any appreciable difference in the performance?
>>

Tanfoglio uses conventional rifling.
To the best of my knowledge, the only polygonal rifled 941s in the US were imported by KBI.

>>32480918
Do you like to punish yourself or something?
Get a small frame Witness and stick to not-retarded calibers.

What I want to know - I have a shot out Witness Compact 9, and the .22lr conversion kit.
I've thought about getting one of the dirt cheap Polymer Witnesses, using its 9mm slide on my Compact, the .22 slide on the Poly frame, and chucking the loose whore slide and barrel I have now. Anybody know if the slides on poly and steel witnesses are interchangeable?

I'm looking at buying a CVA Scout V2 in .45-70 for next deer season, anyone own one of these or know if they're reliable/a good choice?

http://www.cva.com/CVA-Store-View.php?id=849
>>
>>32515652
Look up progressive rifling. Short answer is that easing from a long twist to a shorter twist helps extend the life of the barrel.
>>
>>32515864
Thanks, m8. That's pretty interesting
>>
Just finished Westworld and want a western gat.

Henry lever action in .357 or 1851 Navy cap and ball?
>>
I recently bought a bunch of surplus SKS stripper clips for my Yugo that I'm going to get in a week. Is keeping them loaded bad for the clips?
>>
>>32515652
It's not a new idea. Been around forever. Search "gain twist", or progressive twist as the other poster said.

While it can offer benefits, they aren't dramatic, and for the most part, aren't sufficient to justify the extra expense.

I know Bartlein makes T-Style rifled barrels. Schuemann makes 1911 gain-twist barrels too.

I believe the 20mm M61 Vulcan still uses it as well.
>>
rented the sig p320 today, and i have two questions(i am use to shooting a 1911 so this might just be due to inexperience.

1st do all polymer pistols feel loose? like the barrel & and magazine felt wobbly.

2nd the brass kept hitting me in the forehead what was i doing wrong(the brass wasn't bouncing off the range walls)?
>>
>>32517516
anyone because i'm actually curious about this
>>
>>32517516
pretty much everything with mags that drop free has play in the magwell even 1911s

Not yet, just got it and i'm currently away from home, it'll get a glow plug engine when it's done though and run on nitro fuel (free flight, no controls)

pretty sure i've seen you post on /o/ before
Union firearms seems to have been another one of those "dime a dozen" firearms companies that came and went right around the turn of the century, and were sold through sears catalogues
that's pretty much all i know about 'em, the gun isn't particularly anything unique but a double barrel does seem to go well with that sportster's straight pipes

AR-15 with an EO-tech sight, a laser, and angled grip.

Thanks, I just put this pic on /dbt/, someone liked it so I started to research it. Sadly with this company people are more interested in trying to value and sell them, instead of actual information.

Can't specifically speak to the Scout, but I have two CVA black powder guns. One is a SxS 12 ga. shotgun, the other a .50 caliber inline muzzleloader. Both are quality weapons. The muzzleloader comes with a breech plug for shotgun primers, and another for percussion caps. The plug for the shotgun primers was missing the spring that holds the primers in place. I called CVA and asked them to send me the spring. "No. We'll send you the complete breech plug instead. Hold on to the one without the spring, it might be handy some time." They sent it via regular mail the next day.
>>
>>32519245
For free? My eclipse is missing same spring
>>
>>32519381
Yep. That was a few years ago, though. Give them a call, ask for the spring. They'll probably at least send it. You might get lucky and get a plug. If not, midway sells them.
>>
>>32473098
Yeah man go for it! If your planning on shooting it a lot you should pick up a limb saver and a cheap sling off eBay

>>32519406
I saw them, I think they are like 30 but I'd love a free spring. If I got a free plug then cool, I'd be happy at spring though. It's bot that important though, I prefer my wolf magnum

>>
>>32473105
$160 is a pretty good price for a Mosin these days but the 91/30 '42 Izzies are basically shit tier. I'd only buy it if you have fired it before and know that it shoots and functions well (no stickybolt/reasonable groupings).
>>
I'm thinking of buying a Russian capture k98, this is what he sent me: https://sli.mg/a/heSMCG what do you guys think?
>>
>>32520038
For $400 you can get a Finnish M39 or Swiss K31, both of which will shoot circles around that thing.

If you want a Mauser that's not a terrible deal for an RC I suppose, but you can also get Yugo M24/47s for ~250-300 if you look around and those tend to be in good shape. Of course they aren't German so it depends how badly you want an Ex-Nazi rifle.
>>
>>32520155
Yeah, I'm trying to obtain a nazi era k98, not really looking for long range accuracy but something fun to shoot and some "cred" for having a nazi era weapon.
>>
>>32520194
Then try to talk him down to about $400 and go for it.

Dragonman out by schriever is a cheap outdoor place, but it's pretty barebones. You can rent there at least.
There's also the Cheyenne range by ft. Carson that doesn't have rentals, but it's bigger and nicer while running about the same price.
The only indoor range I know is magnum shooting center up by briargate. It's a little overpriced unless you go on a Monday.
>>
Can someone explain to me why people use stainless barrels in handguns? I understand it in ARs because you can actually shoot hundreds of meters but in handguns it seems that its pretty much impossible to shoot accurately beyond 50 yards because of the inherent traits of a handgun. So why do some come with SS barrels, seems like nothing more than a burden that wears out far faster

How can I replicate the BBQ paint finish found on most refurbished Russian SKSs It's worn off in a few spots and underneath is parkerizing and it really clashes with black BBQ paint finish.

Would Krylon or Rust-Oleum BBQ paint work?

Is cosmoline removal a fun project?

I want to buy two Mosin Nagants because my buddy and I have no guns and he is way into Soviet history, but I'm not sure if I want to buy them from a gun shop or try and find some still in cosmoline so that we can strip them as a fun project. Never having done this before I don't know if that's even logical. Thoughts?

sounds okay maybe a little high by today's standards. But if it's in good condition it should be a decent pick up.

it depends on your concept of fun. It's a little tedious. There are some videos on youtube that can help you. Iraqveteran 8888 has tons of videos on mosins and how to care for them

Is it cheaper to buy things at a gun show? I'm new to guns and there's a show this weekend, thinking about stopping by. It's a $10 entrance fee so I guess that has to be factored in
>>
>>32528043
Not really, you may find a good deal every now and then, but its usually at or a bit over msrp. Now, if you're after something come back on the last day and commence haggle.
>>
>>32528043
>Is it cheaper to buy things at a gun show?
No. You don't really go to gun shows for the prices. You go to see stuff you wouldn't normally stumble across in a typical gun store. I still would definitely recommend going though. I always have fun drooling over the neat guns I find.
>>
Is it possible to get a German-made K98 for $300 or less?
>>
>>32529401
You could steal it, might be able to snag one at a locally owned pawn shop that doesn't know why it has funny words on a durr rifle.
