If you really want to spend your free time with melee weapons, I very much recommend a 5 foot bo staff and it's multitude of applications and incarnations.

You can increase your challenge from a wooden staff by picking up a 5 foot steel pipe, or a solid piece of rebar. And it's all legal to carry basically everywhere. Well CC your pistol also, ok?

I have trained with 5 foot staff due to it's speed. Less momentum and the lenght relates with everyday items like broom handles, billiard cues and traveller's walking sticks.
