PROTIP: The Expedition is cool-looking but is fragile trash. I owned mine for 6 months, took it off one night to do dishes, and when I pulled it out of my pocket, the crown caught the pocket lining and pulled the fuck off the watch, with almost no force used.

I replaced it with pic related. iirc it was $20 more than the Timex and it's 10x the watch.

Why does everybody hate Casio digital watches? I nabbed mine for $14.99 two years ago and it has been amazing. The stopwatch function is convenient on lunch breaks to make sure I don't spend two hours eating a sandwich and it is within 30 seconds of sattelite time after shooting with it on twice a month.

A smartphone battery lasts around 8 hours while using it as the "normal" person would. My watch battery lasts over 3 years and has a compass built in. There is no hope for idiots like you. Kill yourself.
>>
>>32472342
That's just because you don't have a power bank and spare batteries for your smartphone (you bought into the non-removable battery meme, didn't you? Idiot). And it's not like you have time to use a smart phone all the time innawoods either.

Casio g-shock watches are the most solid ones you could ever find.
>>
>>32472447
Sorry bruv.

Ride it out, see how long you get out of it. Like I said, it's a cool fucking watch (thing looks cool as fuck in the dark, for instance). Just not all that well-made.

Be careful of the crown snagging on shit and you might well get a lot longer out of yours than I did mine.

Overall I'd still recommend a better watch at some point. I tend to beat the shit out of my stuff, and that Seiko's held up extremely well. It's also solar-powered (Seiko rates the battery for like 20 years) and has a much more minimalist aesthetic than you really see with a lot of watches that cater to the /k/ crowd. See: all the G-shocks ITT (bar a few examples) with so much shit cluttering up the display you can hardly read the damn thing.
>>
There is a disturbing lack of "the sun and a stick" in this thread.

>Be careful of the crown snagging on shit and you might well get a lot longer out of yours than I did mine.

This is why, except for dress watches to be worn casually or with a suit or whatever (just not innawoods and the like) you must insist on a watch with a screw-down crown.

It helps somewhat with water resistance (usually watches with screw down crowns have better WR than those without anyway, with some strange exceptions) but mainly so that this sorta thing cannot happen.

also i've been wanting a chronograph complication. Grand Seiko, Omega Speedy, or a Zenith El Primero are the front runners. pic related... if only it had lume. and a less awkward place for the power reserve complication.
>>
>>32479626
yeah, honestly when i'm flying the more important things i focus on are timing legs of a journey, and calculating fuel consumption which if you've got that stuff committed to memory you only need a simple calculator to do the trick.
the ca53 has a "lap" function for the chrono which makes it super useful for timing legs, and a dual timezone function for if you're traveling far away
>>
>>32479663
pre-swatch speedmaster famalam
or unless you don't care just get a reduced gen speedy off chrono24 for like, 1200 bux from some jap seller, they're p common there
>>
>>32479667

i guess i'm spoiled, my jet'll tell me the fuel state estimate assuming i'm going direct to the next steer point as well as ETE/ETA, and predictive through the route of the flight to whatever steerpoint i tell it to. it's pretty intuitive, you just have to tell it where you're going to next.

GMT complications are super awesome though.

>>32479680

i'm considering the Seikos for autistic watchfag nerdiness based on their movements, and the El Primero for historic reasons and the fact that they've got a 36000 bph chronograph and because it's different/it's a snowflake

i mean back in the day i did it with a lot of 60:1 math and hacking clocks for 36 seconds (or 15 or 6 or 30) and a lot of mental math... but i've got an ADCP that tells me a wind-corrected heading to fly, why wouldn't i use it? i've got more important things to worry about like "how do i find this thing so i can blow it up"
>>

snkl23 has been my trusty go-to dress watch for the past year, got it because of a jack forster article https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-seventy-five-dollar-watch-that-looks-like-a-million-bucks
(the alligator strap is worth more than twice the watch)
>>32479865
true, a bunch of the field i'm studying in is related to human factors and making things easier for pilots so having instruments like that just boost the convenience level tenfold and make a lot of traditional items just, useless
still is handy to have an e6b at the ready just in case murphys law kicks in

For anyone thinking about picking up a F-91, I was looking for the same about 5 years ago. Then I stumbled across this watch, the W-59. I know, the F-91 has meme value, but this one, in my opinion, is more attractive. The W-59 is the same size and shape as the F-91, but I think the aesthetics are a little "cleaner" on the W-59. Additionally, it's also rated as water resistant down to 50M, as opposed to the F-91 which isn't even safe to take in the shower or get wet when washing your hands (Casio says this themselves). Anyway, it's the watch I have now and I really like it. I think it's worth a look if you want a watch like the F-91.

I used this for four plus years starting in my time in the Army as an infantryman to when someone stole it.

The only issue I had was the light-up function stopped working sometime around year two, but it wasn't a big issue when the dials glowed softly in the dark, anyway.

I liked the simplicity and leather band. Not a fan of NATO, plastic, or, worst of all, metal for innawoods. I never really needed the extra dials and barely cared to set the date. If I was a diver or something, I might have invested in something heavier, but it fit my needs well enough.

Thanks man. (Also nice dub 7s.)

I got the watch as a gift and didn't like it at all on the default strap, which was also un-comfy as hell, but getting this orange overload really pulled it together. It turns the watch from plain tacky into some kind of crazy statement thing.

Plus it's just damn useful. Easy access to calendar, timer, etc, and I even use the flight computer when playing flightsims. (It's useful as hell because I fly in Imperial measurements and most other people use metric.)

Rude. The W-59 actually looks very similar to the F-91, so calling it 'ugly' is essentially like calling the F-91 ugly.

>shit battery life
Not true. You have to change the battery once or twice a year, which is good for a watch like this.
>seals fuck up
Depends on do you fuck them up or not. I didn't, because I know how to swap a battery. It shouldn't be hard for anyone.
>ABC function sucks
It does, if you don't understand how the watch works. It can't magically know your altitude and barometric pressure, so regular calibration is required to get accurate data. This is true for all ABC watches whether the company tells you this or not. Suunto does.
>must remove watch for 15 mins for accurate thermometer reading
True and completely normal, if you think about it. After all, your body heats the watch and it doesn't have any reasonable way of figuring out, which heat comes from the environment and which heat comes from you body.

Core isn't perfect though; it's not shock proof and the water resistance is quite bad. If you want a durable Suunto, buy one that's made in Finland. I broke my Core and got a Traverse to replace it. Traverse is a million times more durable than Core and now there are also versions with sapphire glass.

bought it when in Iraq. The barometer is excellent and will give a great reading if you plug in your elevation. (or the reverse).

Don't use the compass because the re calibration time (~30 seconds to remove and spin it) to set it up negates a lot of the usefulness. You're better off with a magnetic compass to get reoriented in 7 seconds reorientation. I suppose it would work in a survival manner, but I don't have those problems. For primary navigation you wouldn't use a watch compass.

Temperature is also accurate to within 1 degree, but you have to remove the watch for 15+ minutes, so practicality is low.

overall, I am happy for the $45 it cost me.

I have worn this watch just about 24/7 for the last 13 years barring a few days here and there to replace batteries, band pins, and spring bars... I finally just bought a big set of pins, spring bars, and the battery case tool to repair stuff on my own since I feel naked without it. The only scratch to the crystal was from bashing the shit out of it on the edge of a stainless steel counter top. I thought it would have shattered... My wife keeps wanting me to get a new one and I keep telling her to go fuck herself...

I wish somebody would make something like this but without the Breitling price tag and with slightly less gaudy styling.

I had a pebble for a while and found it pretty useful for basic notifications but I don't like the styling or interface of smart watches. This is pretty cool since it'd give me texts and caller ID but would still be a regular analog watch at the same time. A high-end watch is a definite no, though, because I find the smart features most useful when I'm working in the shop.
>>
>>32498248
That's pretty slick, what model is it?
>>
>>32498304
And shit, I just read a review and I guess it just gives you a "Call" or "Text" notification but not any details. Never mind then.

I don't know why nobody has made something like this with a good hybrid of smart and traditional features. An e-ink display could replace the digital ones on that watch if necessary. I really like a smart watch in the shop because it lets my leave the phone somewhere safe and the watch tells me if a call or text is important enough to stop what I'm doing, wash up, and reply to it.
>>
>>32498164
I think you got a lemon, have you talked to Seiko about it? The watch thread on /g/ made a single digits number of seconds per day sound like the norm.
>>
>>32498322
The back says Seiko 5y23-5099
>>
>>32498164
That definitely sounds weird, I haven't noticed anywhere close to that much with my SKX.

That said I switch watches so often that I usually have to restart and reset my SXK every time I wear it, so timekeeping isn't a big deal to me. I've worn it for weeks straight before, though, and didn't have any issues with timekeeping.
>>
Is the DW5600 the best casio, or is there other types of square g shocks that are better or similar (without increasing the price drastically?)
>>
>>32498304

Citizen has a blue tooth enabled analog watch.

I forgot the model name but it has little hands that point to a spot when you get a call or an email etc etc
>>
>>32498284
What is it specifically?
>>
>>32498304

Tag's smart watch is pretty nice looking. no hands-on experience though.

Could you stop being a faggot?
>>
>>32503890
not him, but I'm right handed and I wear my watch on my right hand and holy shit does that ever trigger the fuck out of some people. not really sure why they feel the need to tell me I'm doing it wrong.
>>
>>32503936

because you're doing it wrong you fucking mong.

start wearing your watch on the correct wrist like an adult.
>>
>>32503942
i'm in my 30's and i've always worn it on this hand. seriously, why does it trigger you so much? why do you care? and who (other than you) says I'm doing it wrong?
>>
>>32503954

western society. i'm in my 30's too, and my father sat me down when i was about 5 and told me how to wear a watch. maybe if your father wasn't possibly half of the trailer park yours would have done the same.

the crown is on the right hand side for a reason. pushers are on the right hand side for a reason. you can shoot a gun, write a letter, do work with your right hand and check the time with your left.
>>
>>32503983
well I've never felt the need to look at my watch while I'm shooting but if it ever does become a problem I'll be sure to take your advice and change wrists. thanks dad.

That's the watch I have. Haven't had any issues with it, only thing slightly annoying is the dual time feature and the lap timer. But it just werks, and if it ever doesn't I can spend another $15 and get a different one or similar one. It seems as though most watches are jewelry, toys, or toy jewelry.
