silly question: How'd you know what wood and what stain to use to get it exactly matching with the rifle stock?
>>
I was looking in my local gunstore today (in Canada), and I saw a Swiss M1893 Mannlicher carbine for roughly 750 USD. It seemed to be in decent shape, and was made in 1905, but it had been refinished a couple times during service. Would that be a reasonable price for it?

I'd have to reload using shortened 7.5x55 brass, if I felt like shooting it.

Stock finish was nonexistent carried it for two days in my weather and stock had water marks all over , I didn't want to warp or really damage the stock ,so it could be a safe queen or I refinish the stock water seal it and carry like I wanted, looks good spent another two days in the weather with it and no issues. Nice shooting rifle, plus found all kinds of armory marks and commie grunt carvings on it under the crud. Very happy with it

jesus man, I don't like shitting on other people's handwork, but the finish on that rifle just doesn't go with the mosin or its dark bluing. Maybe try something darker? That finish is just too bright in my honest opinion.

>>
>>32469215
Yeah mine was also, and if you don't plan on really making it in harsh conditions I'd leave it as is, mine looks like it does because I hand sanded the old varnish off, I know the commies used a red tinted varnish, but like I said before I wanted the markings to show. Depending on how long this finish last the next time I redo it may go for a darker finish, like I'm doing on my other weapons I'm having to redo the stocks on.figure the factories would use finishes a little more resistant to water but they don't.

There is kind of a "disclaimer" about it. The guy said the rifling looks sharp BUT, the bore has some mild "rust damage." Pics didn't look too bad. My guess is the owner shot corrosive and never cleaned it, or maybe it was never shot and still has cosmo in the barrel. Regardless, I can't imagine it's that bad. I'll clean it and see how it looks.

I've been clearing out my parts bin and I've found some stuff I don't need any more, but I don't know what to price it at to sell. Can any of you help me out?

I've got both front and rear M91 barrel bands like pic related. Liberty Tree sells them at $50, but Liberty Tree can also be a little expensive. What would be a fair asking price?

And the other is a brownish/greenish Finnish M39 sling with no [SA] or other markings of any kind. I see these selling for as little as $15 to as much as $40. What would be a fair price for this?

And a plane jane M91/30 cleaning kit. I don't know how to sell this because nobody needs one.

K31s are pretty much tapped out. Normally I wouldn't believe a local gun shop, but in this case, they were one of the big importers into Canada of Swiss rifles. They said that they've pretty much got all the Swiss gov't had in their arsenals (that they were willing to sell off), so the next batch was private buys and higher in price. Other than a few here and there, I don't think we'll be seeing many more.

Sooner rather than later is your best bet.

What's with the bubba bolt on the Mosin?
>>
>>32476718
The bubba bolt wasn't me, I got a deal on the mosin for 150 so I don't really mind too much. The type 99 is a Toyo Kogyo series 31. All the parts match down to the safety, firing pin, and dust cover. It's not shown in the photo, but it also has the AA sights.

Nice! I have a Tokyo Juki Kogyo rifle in similar original condition. And I could tell it has the AA sight wings. Does yours have the mum intact? Only thing missing about mine.
>>
>>32476792
The only thing that is preventing mine from being a museum quality piece would be a slight mark on the the mum. All 16 petals are clearly visible, but there seemed to be a very slight defacing, like a single hammer and chisel strike on it. It overall is a very lazy defacing, and 90% of the chrysanthemum is still intact. I was searching for months for one in a condition like this and finally picked this one up for 500 out the door last week.

I'll probably be able to post a picture later on today, or tomorrow. It definitely is an odd defacing because I have not seen any other markings like it in the probably hundreds of chrysanthemums I have viewed online. Do you know anything about type 38s? I heard some made during the war also had chrome barrels, I would be very interested in looking at picking up one of those if it's true.

Nothing is wrong with that. Tbh, intact mums only increase the value a lot when the gun is a rare variation or it's in super pristine condition which includes all original and matching. Some series are also more commonly found with their mum intact too.

>I heard some made during the war also had chrome barrels, I would be very interested in looking at picking up one of those if it's true.
Those were made before the war. Well, at least before the US entered the war. About '38-'39. It was the last ones made by Nagoya Arsenal in the 26th series. And it wasn't all of them of the series it was just a few thousand for a test. The bolt faces weren't chrome lined. They did that on some Type 97 sniper rifles, but not the barrels on those.

How can you fix THIS problem? I didn't know it was broken when I got it, and it broke up in two shots.

Do you recommend a new handguard, a fix, a shim...?

Use a wooden dowel (or multiple dowels) and some proper rifle stock epoxy like Brownell's Acraglas to join the two together.

In addition to that, I'm not actually trying to return the rifle back to its original condition, only to make it as neat as I can.

They also used Type 99s in China, but mostly Type 38s. Your rifle probably wasn't. It was given to a high school or university to train students in marksmanship. The army transferred old and worn out rifles to the schools for that purpose.
The symbol that was partially ground off with the mum (that already would have been defaced when given to the school) is 文(mon) which is the first character of the word mon-bu-sho which translates as "ministry of education."

Huh, you're right that it says "Big East." I thought big was a 6, but those two symbols are similar. But it says that in both Chinese and Japanese. My guess is that "Big East" is probably a unit or place name and it's the 71st rifle of that unit or place.

The two zeroes in front of the serial number were also added when it was transferred to a school.

My rifle is a Karabinek wz. 98. The Poles re-used parts from German WWI K98AZ's for the first series to be made. Mine has a domestically produced, Polish proofed stock.

By the time the Wz.29 rolled around, they were using only domestically produced stocks.

Poles kept the cutout for a turndown bolt handle even on straight-handled weapons such as the Wz.29.

Photo is of how my rifle should appear. I still want to get it reblued to at least get rid of the pitting.

And more on with Daito "Big East" stamped on the stock. There is a city of Daito in the Osaka Prefecture. It's probably the stamp of a school there.

>>32490134
>We just found that there was a connection between 'big east' and second sino-japanese war
You found no connection. What reason would there for the Chinese to stamp "Big East" on a stock?

>yes, I know I put the dogtag upside down. I wasn't paying attention when I took the picture.

>>

We thought it could have been carved and not stamped into the stock. Again, I'm going on what I have and most commonly supported clues/ evidence- it's not a lot, and it's not stable, but it's something.

It's actually probably a brand. It's clearly made in one strike unlike a carving. Nothing atypical about it. I see brands similar to that on school rifles all the time.

The Chinese did also have brands on captured Japanese rifles, but they usually will say shit like "people's militia" and those were imported in the 1980s and were all beat to shit by said militia for 30+ years.

"Field use of the K98a rifles showed that as an infantry weapon, and not a weapon for auxiliary or special troops as originally purposed, the design was inadequate. The greatest flaw was the weak bayonet mount (the bayonet lug would break off when hitting hard objects). The K98a also used a small-ring Mauser action, which complicated production and parts interchangeability. Following the postwar shift to large-ring carbines with 600 mm barrels and Gewehr 98-style bayonet lug/muzzle lengths, such as the Czech vz. 24, the decision was made to develop an intermediate model rifle for the Polish Army. The design was finalized in 1929. The new wz.29 rifle was based on the old wz.98 rifle, but with a shortened stock and barrel, stronger alloys for the receiver and barrel, a reinforced chamber, and increased dimensional tolerance in the action, allowing for easy interchangeability of parts. There were two versions of the rifle: Infantry models had straight bolt handles, while cavalry models had curved handles. Since both variations used the same stock, infantry models had a cutout in the stock for the curved handle."

>yes EVERY Wz 29. read things once in awhile.

I'm not disagreeing with you asshole; I'm saying that there's no way they had enough German-made Kar.98a stocks to refurbish and then fit to K.29s like Anon said.

I think you're the one with reading comprehension problems.

Mind if I ask where you picked this one up from exactly? I would love to have one of these. Do they still shoot well, or are they too old to really take down to the range and put a couple hundred shots through? About same accuracy as mosin? Really any info on these would be appreciated.
>>
>>32494326
Got it on Gunbroker. More often than not, you can find them at the Rock Island or Julia auctions though, but they won't be cheap (neither was mine but whatever).

Shoots great, I havent done any formal accuracy testing but I can nail shotgun clays all day long at 100 yards offhand, so I figure 2ish MOA. Honestly I love the thing and can't really find a flaw outside of the shape of the butt.
>>
>>32494382
I saw a few in the next Rock Island auction, couldn't find any on Gunbroker. It also seems the latest battlefield 1 game featured this gun, making the price rise even further, and add to the scarcity of them. With the french and russian expansion packs coming for that game I wonder which guns will be featured and subsequently rise in price. Better snap up what WW1 milsurp I can before it all goes off the deep end.
>>
>>32494444
I don't think BF1 is gonna change the price on these much. They've been $2000+ for the past 3 years that I've been searching for one. Same with Lebels and Berthiers. For the most part WW1 surplus hasn't been cheap for awhile.

Muh dick.

Speaking of Lee Enfields tho, I have a No. 1 Mk3* that I am considering having its stock set redone. The foreend cracked in like 4 places a few months back and while I got it repaired its still pretty shitty looking. I know about oy vey you bubba its like anudda shoah but im concerned to shoot it again because of how many places it cracked. I would just try to find a new fore end but I have the stock variant with the little block and I cant find any of that type anywhere.

tl:dr version. Should I have my Enfields fore end refinished and repaired or just leave it as is and risk it cracking in another spot

Im gunna shoot it next weekend and see how it does and if it holds up for like 50 rounds I think I am good. I will be getting a few more SMLEs this year tho. Have a couple of projects in mind for bad sporters and a nice Pre MkIII SMLE.

No I thought about getting a packet and a round of the Slugs but I just havent gotten a chance. sort of a blessing and a curse with the .410s. Its great that alot of them were converted to the American .410 so ease of ammo acquisition but it sucks that all the original ammo will go unused

If you are arguing FOR getting a sniper nugget, what are some things I should be looking out for specific to the PU nugget (anything out of the ordinary barrel check, etc.)

yes the old stuff shoots fine, but can have trouble extracting....the old british cases are short and FAT, its like a .303 case that got a .40 cal ball shoved it in.

Centurian ammo was cheap as shit, but its crap and the brass caps bulge and you need a flathead screw driver to pry the rounds out.

it probably chews up the Golden Bear because those cases are longer than standard .410.

The Federal stuff worked the best out of the ammo I tried, never had an issue.

If you're going to shoot the rifle you should remove the cosmoline. It will get dried out and baked into the barrel channel by the hot barrel and then it's a huge pain to remove.
>Is it best practice to just leave it as is or gently wipe away the grease?
Just heat the stock up with a hair dryer or heat gun (125°F is fine) and wipe cosmo off the stock until no more comes out.
