Hey /k/,

I want another leveraction. I don't hunt.

Kinda tempted to get pic related 1895G in 45/70 trump bullets. (45th president 70 years old)

Sorta offput by price of ammo as I don't hunt and it will just be for fucking about and shooting paper but I am planning on reloading soon. (Have press and shit to reload 38/357 for my Rossi 92 in 357 magnum)

What do you recommend I grab?

-45/70 (Pistol grip or straight) Does barrel length matter? Large loop or regular?

-30-30 336 or 1894 winchester (Fired a 30-30 once and it didn't feel too different from 357 magnum with 150gr loads)

-44 magnum or 45 colt (More plinkan)

Which do you think I would have most fun with/easiest to reload?

Another reason I lean towards 45/70 is my love of trapdoor springfield, remington rolling block and sharpes. (browning hiwall too) But I don't have the dosh for these yet.
>>
>>32466550
>>32466550
45/70 is a big round with a lot of power. if you reload for it, its not too bad on the wallet. id like my first levergun and dont know what model or type to get. im looking into uberti winchester clones
>>
>>32466573
What model winchester?

the rossis are rough and BR quality but strong guns.

Uberti are pretty and well made.

Miroku - modern browning are beautifully crafted but aparently have some issues with breakage on hammer parts and are overly complicated.

To address some of your points:

>pistol grip or straight?

Pistol grip will generally be slightly more comfortable (personal preference though), but the difference is not really substantial enough to be too decisive in my opinion. Check out both for yourself in person though to see if you strongly prefer one or the other

>30-30 336 or 1894
Both are perfectly fine, but your decision should hinge on a few questions: Do you want to use a scope? Do you want to use cast bullets for 30-30? If you want to mount a scope, it is infinitely easier to do it to a marlin than a winchester due to the side-ejection on the 336. Also, the 336 performs rather poorly using cast bullets due to its rifling (only on their 30-30 models though). Finally, I would strongly recommend getting a pre-acquisition marlin if you decide to take that route, as they have FAR better fit and finish compared to their contemporary counterparts. Pre-64 winchesters will almost always be nicer than their later counterparts too, but the difference is not nearly as noticeable in most respects, so keep it in mind anyway.

>44 magnum or 45 colt?
Do you already have a firearm that uses one of those cartridges (or are you planning on buying one in the future)? If so, then you might want to just go with one of those, but please stay away from Rossi clones if you can. They are a firm step down in most respects, and you would be much better off getting a marlin, winchester, or even old ruger lever actions instead. Straight walled cases like 44 mag, 45 LC, and 45/70 are all extremely easy to reload, but 30-30 isn't terribly difficult either once you learn to use a case trimmer. If you ever decide to take up hunting, the rifle cartridges will obviously be superior for larger game, but its irrelevant if you're just punching targets.

Let me know if you have any other questions, but you're really on the right track so far

Love me some levergat porn. My brush gun, 29.5" OAL carbine. Going to the gunsmith again for more custom work
>>
>>32466708
>rossis are a step down
Out of the box, they are rough. 2 hours polishing mine and it's smoother than my Winchester 92. And the goofy safety can be removed. Not much different anon they are great clones and accurate as fuck
>>
>>32466594
i want an 1873 model winchester
>>
>>32466792
Well, I may have come off as harsh regarding Rossi clones, and I should clarify that they are not just 'junk'. My primary concern is that op is coming from a position of inexperience, especially regarding lever actions and polishing, although extremely beneficial to Rossi actions, is quite a task for a beginner who may not know the ins and outs of stoning components. Also, if there is something legitimately amiss with the rifle, it could take some time for warranty work to properly go through

Yeah fair enough, I'm pretty knowledgeable about these lever guns, and there are videos on YouTube of what exactly to polish. Like if you get the .357/.38, .357 might feed fine but .38 can be sticky. Mine is in .45 colt I'm >>32466774
Probably my favourite lever gun that I've acquired. Favourite caliber too for pistol rounds
>>
>>32466913
They're built by a brick shithouse eh? Love my Rossi. Was yours a bit rough at the start breaking it in and clambering rounds? Mine was a bit but I bought my ranch hand carbine off a gun smith who knew what he was doing
>>
>>32467047
Yes a little rough, but after I tore it down and a couple hours with Emory cloth its smooth as greased glass, carry this on most of my camping trips above all others, even my ar.
>>
>>32466708
The cartridge I want the most guns in is 45/70 I think.

I'm Canadian so the shortest firearm I can carry legally being NR is the ranch hand, by itself it's more of a novelty but with a carbine stock it is incredibly useful. Great caliber and is the perfect brush gun for us Canadians. No stamp required. What do ya think?
>>
>>32467145
Sweet really want one in.45 colt to go with my toklat I'd do the same and put a full size rear stock on it and carry like that. Hard to beat the lever action as a camping/ brush gun
>>
>>32467246
Love me some .45 colt. A friend just loaded me up some hot rounds that are more powerful than my dads .44 magnum. Factory ammo 44 vs 45, 44 wins but when you reload 45 blows 44 away. It was invented to take down a horse at 100 yards away. Hard to beat a lever gun, I'd suggest the Rossi vs Henry mainly because of the loading gate vs the tube and the price is half as much. I assume you're American? That sucks that you need a stamp but I'd trade gun laws in a second we're mostly cucked for what we can have and carry out in the brush

30-30 or 357? I don't plan on intentionally hunting with it, mainly range fun to pair with my 357 revolver.
>>

>>

I would have talked down .375 in a long-gun, but it sounds like an easy answer for what you're planning to do with it,
>>
>>32466550
I'd like to up the ante and ask about 308 and 338 Marlin Express lever guns. I really like the idea of a lever gun that can reach out to 300 yards, but is it going to impossible to find ammo for them as the years roll on?
>>
>>32466913
I heard they have sticky levers. Plus they are made by Taurus so I would rather have a Marlin 1895
>>
>>32467896
Every lever gun is sticky, until you break it in. Have you even read the comments in the thread? Taurus makes shit handguns, their levers are really good considering their a Winchester clone.
>>
>>32467819
I wish marlin still made 357
>>
>>32467896
No issues with it,also own two other Taurus pistols judge and tracker plenty of rounds throughout all with no issues, most of the hate I see for Taurus is unfounded I think
>>
>>32468038
I heard rumors they will again soon
>>
>>32468061
Where did you hear it? I noticed they started making 1894 cowboy recently but only in 45 and 44.
>>
>>32468086
Maybe that was it... hit them up. Honestly my favorite gun. I hate they stopped.
>>
Considering that .45-70 is well suited for minute-of-fucking-shit-up shooting, a hand-loading kit works quite well for plinking ammo. Load the rounds on the light side and the brass will last for 10+ shots. Add in bullet casting and you can cook up relatively decent plinking loads for less than 50 cpr.

Think of the mad pussy you'll bring in when you pull out a .45-70 to plink with at the range.
>>
>>32468105
Nothing wrong with either 44 or 45. Prefer both to 357 honestly, much more power and I feel comfortable bringing either to bear country
>>
Canadian newfag here, planning on getting my FAC right away. For my first rifle I'm thinking a levergun like a marlin 336w or henry. I'm not a hunter, so it's mostly plinking and range shooting, as well as some defense when camping. I'm thinking a 30-30 marlin 336w. Opinions on this as a starting gun?
>>
>>32468645
About the best starting rifle there is, 336 is damn fine cheap, tough, and the .30-.30 has taken more deer than any other round out there

Here's the Marlin 1895 I just received from my grandpa for Christmas.
Me and him went hog hunting together with it pretty much this same time last year.
He put on an xs rear ghost ring, some kind of trigger kit I'll have to ask him which one but it's very nice, and he had a guy do the custom big loop lever.
I got his 45-70 dies, brass, bullets, and all the loaded ammo he had for it.
Best Christmas ever kommrades.

Does rossi make a normal loop lever for thier rio grande model? Hate the large loops and is one of the reasons why I haven't picked one up yet.

45-70 or .444 marlin. I would scope a .444 and leave iron sites on the 45-70. The external ballistics are different enough to own one of each.

45-70
Cast 405 gn flat nose over Trail Boss is very nice shooting.

300 gn jacketed hollow points over Reloader 7 is dead deer.

400gn Woodleigh Hydrostatically Stabilized Solid over Reloader 7 is dead elephant.

Lehigh Defense Xtreme Penetrator are cheaper but have no known elephant or cape buff kills.

Both solids should punch holes in the space time continuum.

I yeah the mags are stupid expensive. For the price you pay, you should at least get two. But that's browning for you paid thousands of dollars for a weapon just to be handed a cheap cardboard box. As far as the 10 round magazine would go. I don't know about the short actions, but I know with the long actions you can't have a ten Round magazine because the lever goes to far forward and would be stoppped by the magazine causing a short stroke.

30-30. After taxes it comes to like $430, which I feel isn't a bad deal. And it's a nice setup for deer hunting if I get into it.
>>
I love lever-action guns for their being so friendly to shooting things. They don't go quickly enough in hitting repeatedly without having to keep quick on your toes when there are too many things to shoot... but they love being abandoned by having their bullets exit their barrel!

Short barrels are the best for strict fun play, especially with rapidly mobile rounds (like with better velocity and sharper shapings in a bullet that hits its trajectory with both velocity and any vortex-shaped movement?) I don't know if you like vortexes, but my scientific calculator always forces me to draw them when I chart its calculated solutions to my attempts at using it for geometry... it makes me fantasize about how Depleted Uranium rounds fly. But a short barreled L-A Rifle with fat-ass rounds that are 'technically' smaller than the .45-70g, while the weapon is designed to be AIM-enabled with one hand (even if it takes both hands on it to use as a gun for shooting stuff, like targets, and not just a display piece) would be ecstatically fun to put into a usable position in your life experiences. I'm hooked on auto-loaders and the theories of energy-based systems that really get into sophisticated designing in tech; but I will never stop loving lil' ol' L-A guns like they were made to make a King out of a mere Man. Shorter barrels may not be the longest range-finder's choice... but they really do lead to good association with handling the weapon out of my observational studies in having people trying to use manually-chambering tube-fed weapons in general.
Like... theoretically? It seems pretty available to believe readily that any lever-action or break-action ranged firearm is just more taxing on the user when used with a longer-than-standard-issue barrel on it... while being natural for targeting with grand ol' easy impulses when you have shorter barrels, compared to factory intentions. Admittedly... it's best when PRINTED and PRESSED with these shorter barrels.

>Finally, I would strongly recommend getting a pre-acquisition marlin if you decide to take that route, as they have FAR better fit and finish compared to their contemporary counterparts
Mainly because they were hand-built to no firm specs and custom fitted one at a time. It was physically impossible for Remington to get a good reproduction baseline, and the equipment used was insanely ancient and poorly maintained. They're getting a modern build right in the last few years at least, though, but not quite at the excellence the originals had quite yet.

That's roughly what I paid for mine and it didn't have a scope. I was also retarded and bought it in the time leading up to rifle deer season so the price was a bit inflated. i have a Zestava m77 ak in .308 im thinking of selling for a rossi .357 in 16".

i rarely use the m77 cuz .308 is somewhat expensive. i cant hunt with it cuz "straightwall only", and where i am in Ohio the range would be wasted by trees anyway. even my farthest local range is 300m lane, so the commie scope it came with is sorta wasted in potential. Its kinda awkward and heavy to innawoods with compared to a light lever-gat...

anyone think i should sell a $750 gun for a $500 gun? i could probably use the surplus to get into reloading .357 or .38 at home.

really the m77 is fun, and i like having an AK Battle rifle, but frankly its not as practical. i have a .30-30 marlin and an old winchester that gramps left me, and lever action is super satisfying, but again Ohio has gay hunting caliber laws and .30-30 is pricey here. .357 seems really practical to me

Yep. I beat the hell out of my 1894 in .44mag and it still looks really good. I've never had a functional issue, and only some of the bluing got messed up after six months of open storage in a humid, salty environment (long story, shitty location, have since acquired gun safe).
