/ktg/ knife thread general #66

My favourite knife that I own.
Christmas gift
>>32466819
Even if it's something you wouldn't use, just throw it in the toolbox or glove compartment and you'll always have a knife handy.
Thinking of selling some of my production folders nd dropping $500 on a midtech
Should I?
>>32466853
It's taken up residence in my m65. I usually keep a knife in each of my coats anyway.
Dead thread
Top one is a handmedown and bottom is this year's Christmas gift
You would think that given how frequently benchmade uses the axis lock, they would do something to make it not feel so loose and gritty. Kinda shitty to have a knife that costs 3x as much as another and they both have the exact same locking hardware and they're both kinda mediocre.
>>32467461
Im trying to find out where I should sell my knives and trying to come up with prices
>>32467470
Sheath I made for my new knife.
Just lost my edc looking for a new one.... I work at heights and need something that can cut cable and shit in case I get tangled... any suggestions?
>>32467505
Which knives?
Benchmade 860, is it good?
>>32467711
Bradford guardian 3 ffg m390 ( might keep it )
Benchmade mini grip (sheepsfoot)
Benchmade mini barrage (assisted)
Ontario rat 1
Maybe my Benchmade 940
Maybe some of my Spydercos but not sure yet
Trying to thin down the collection
>>32467493
Typical Benchmade.
>>32466532
Was this a mistake
>>32466929
No. What $500 midtech are you going to buy that isn't virtually a complete scam?
Just bought a plain edge USMC KABAR. Is it a good knife or did I fall for a meme?
>>32466532
It's hard for even to choose my favorite folder, much less favorite knife (I.e. including fixed blades).
Spydiechef or PM2 in M4 or Cruwear for folder, Calton necker in 1095 or Spyderco Mule Team in Maxamet for fixed.
>>32468460
Think I'm going to pick up that Mule for my next purchase. Where did you buy your scales?
>>32468588
I got the Halpern Titanium g10 scales.
>>32468424
I've been considering a g&g hawk Mudd
Fully sealed pivot and fully sealed locking mechanism would be very beneficial in the sort of work I do as it's not uncommon for me to have to be cutting in very muddy environments and or completely dunking my knives underwater
And it gets old dissasbling my EDC every day to dry out the ball bearings , or to clean out grit etc
>>32468424
>>32468724
Blood too somewhat surprisingly
Blood is very hard to clean out when it's 5+ hours old
>>32467821
Reddit's /r/knife_swap is a pretty good place to sell, or at least get an idea of good prices
>>32468724
We'll, I'll be damned. You appear to have a legitimate case for buying a midtech, and, assuming the Mudd actually works like it's supposed to in theory, it appears the knife actually has a functional purpose.
I like my Spydercos the most.
Next knife will probably be the Bitchmade 940-1. Love how it's probably the lightest folding knife it's size.
>>32469175
Well the pivot is supposedly completely sealed
And the locking mechanism is also supposedly completely sealed
Btw ball bearings are nice for smoothness but grit is terrible for them
Phosphor bronze is much better for grit but still not nice at all
Fuck if my $500 knife didn't work properly I'd have no issue calling up the makers and bitching about it /demanding money back etc
Water gets inside knives and does terrible things , especially muddy dirty water
Ball bearings start to rust and flat spot other shit starts to rust
Blood is even worse ( though that's only maybe once a month
Maybe a nitrogen based steel with titanium handles /titanium screws etc with phosphor bronze wouldn't be too bad but sand in a frame lock or liner lock sucks
I have to go through 5 or so knives tomorrow and dissasemble/clean/lubricate them
Probably do some sharpening while I'm at it
>>32469434
How do you like the southard?
Will trade you for a 940
>>32469497
>How do you like the southard?
It's my favorite knife. I think the PM2 is the more practical knife, but the Southard has so many weird things about it that all fit me perfectly.
>>32469530
Well fuck
That was the next knife on my to get list but then I started considering a midtech
The southard has sort of been a grail knife from when I very first started collepcting
>>32469564
It's the most expensive knife I've bought, at $200. Worth every penny. My only complaint is the pocket clip so I got a nice custom titanium one off ebay for $25.
It is also the sharpest factory knife I've ever had felt. The only knives that have come close have been my S110V Spyderco. By the time you feel it biting into your skin it's already at the verge of drawing blood.
Just went to Walmart and they had a whole bunch of shit on clearance. Crkt drifter for $15+multitool, sog multitool +knife, Kershaw double knife pack, and more.
I picked up this little Camillus kit that had a little pocket knife a hatchet and some survival key chain thing.
>>32470218
Also got one of those $4 Walmart Ozark trail knives and its not to bad so far other than the stiff lock. Weight is good and it flies out well.
>>32467727
The auto version of it is good.
>>32470250
Forgot pic
Is spine whacking a valid test of an axis lock for EDC or is it autism? I got some Ganzo's for kicks while ordering some other misc chinese ripoff stuff and liked them as a cheap knife till I found out about their axis lock design failing at this. Will I lose fingers or will I have to be doing stuff like batoning or chopping quickly at brush to trigger this?
Plus a buck 55 that I got for christmas and is my new edc, grip is too big and I think I'm going to retire it
Looking to get a new Benchmade knife before their new Balisong comes out January 3rd.
I am thinking about a Emissary or Mini Reflex 2. Anyone have either of them?
>>32467470
When are you getting a usa made one? Fuck Chinese chink shit.
>>32467470
Made in Walden or Ellenville? If not, throw it out.
>tfw I grew up 15 minutes from the Schrade plant

>>32470404
Bid on a couple, haven't got one yet. Working on it.
>>32470405
It's China
>>32470357
i dunno what you get up to while EDC'ing but most everything i do is straightforward cutting, so i'm not exerting any force on the knife that could cause the blade to close on me.
>>32470357
Ganzo's Axis isn't as strong as an actual axis, and realistically you aren't going to suddenly get a ton of force on the back of the blade anyways.
So should I get a southard as my next knife? Or should I save for a while longer and get the Mudd
>>32466532
Is that a Stretch? I own the ZDP-189 Green original (not the Stretch 2). Love it.
I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it wasn't assisted open
>>32472906
If you want a flipper get the ZT0450 or 0095, or if you wanted the Spyderco get a Magnitude or Gayle Bradley Advocate
>>32473399
It's the drop point UKPK. I also have a stretch, but after carrying the UKPK for a while the stretch seems massive.
>>32473405
Is AO not legal where you are or are you just not a fan of the mechanism? I could totally understand the latter, I once sliced open a finger while grabbing my keys because something caught the flipper on my Lcck. I swear that thing has the worst safety device in the world, it holds the knife closed when I want it open and it fails when I need it. I like the Leek itself though.
>>32473417
I have an 0452 cf
I'm trying to decide between a southard and saving a bit longer for a midtech
>>32474027
I don't see what the Southard offers you given the issues you mentioned earlier. Save for the midtech.
>>32474099
I just like the look, I'm a fan of Spydercos , like the sheepsfooty blade
Like it overall
>>32474108
No, I get that, I mean that it doesn't do anything for the grime in the pivot issues you mentioned. Sell the ZT and buy a Southard if you like, but only the Mudd is going to address the grime issues.
>>32473901
Assisted knives are just less fun to fiddle with.
>>32474154
Yeah, I still carry knives when I'm not at work that don't (necessarily) have the same grime issue
And I'm still a collector
IL probably end up with both tbqh just depends What one I get first
I'm actually off work for a while so I'm not in desperate need of a grime proof knife not for a month or so
Also tried carrying a fixed blade for a while ( for the grime issue) but I need something that isn't attached to my belt for work due to ease of access
I need to be able to throw my knife in a breast pocket or toss it to a co-worker
And having a sheath totally attached to my belt means I can't do that
A tech LOC might be better hen the normal sheath but I still prefer folding
Can we get a trigger warning on the OP? I nearly took my finger off with a UKPK I got as a souvenir from the company store where I was in Denver. Finger choil safety my ass.
>>32474455
What were you doing?
>>32474571
Trying to cut the top off a shampoo bottle for my wife.
I cut myself three times in the first four days I owned it, and have since named it Stormbringer.
>>32467687
What kind of cable?
Would I rather have a spyderco fine ceramic stone, or a strop and CBN emulsion?
>>32474027
I don't see why you'd need a Southard when you have the 0452. I think midtechs are not worth the money though. I'd get the Advocate.
>>32474455
Why should we have to account for user error?
>>32475276
That's a pretty hard use for it. I wouldn't try to cut hard plastic with it.
Anyone else have a Manix 2 LW? I think I can hear the spring rattling against the support bar it's around when shaking/moving the knife.
Is that bad?
Should it irritate me?
Got one of these bc of the color and size
>>32475700
Depends on how you use them. A Spyderco F is good for creating and touching up microbevels, leaves an apex finish like a ~8k waterstone, with very high push cutting sharpness while retaining some slicing aggression.
16 micron CBN on balsa can be used to create a similar effect with a convex microbevel but can be a bit more finicky to get good results off of because of how much effect angle, stroke length and force used have when stropping.
Avoid the kind of ~1 micron CBN emulsions typically recommended online, they tend to remove all slicing aggression from an apex with too many stropping passes meaning they can't be used to keep a convex microbevel touched up.
My Spydiechef has been used and kept touched up daily for over a week now and still easily touches up back to ~100% of initial sharpness.
>>32476595
when researching about the spyderco stone, i saw some people didnt have totaly flat stones, and had to grind them down with a diamond. any knowledge on this? i've not got a tough enough stone to lap with.
>>32477350
It's pretty much luck of the draw if yours comes flat. My Spyderco M and if benchstones are perfect, my F benchstone is crap and I don't use it, but all my Sharpmaker rods are fairly flat.
>>32477497
with that being said, do you think it would be a safer bet to go with the CBN?
>>32477640
Personally, I prefer a 16 micron CBN on balsa convex microbevel to a Spyderco F v-shaped microbevel, but be aware that stropping a convex microbevel involves a bit more of a learning curve and finesse than using a stone for a microbevel.
>>32476347
I want it
Why not ?
>>32476595
Because of you I want this knife
>>32477842
Good.
I've been shilling the shit out of it because if it is a sales success and people like the thinner grind, Spyderco might make more knives with similarly thin grinds, and that would make me very happy.
I also have been enjoying the knife so much I've been carrying it continuously since I got it.
>>32478015
If it was cheaper I'd probably buy that one.
I have a benchmade 940 and an Esee Izula II
Will an edge pro apex allow me to sharpen them effectively?
I have no experience sharpening by hand or by machine. I'm not good at stuff like that and I won't be able to keep a consistent angle. I want to know if the apex is dummy-proof. Easy enough for me to just pick up and use.
>>32478340
An EP Apex only eliminates developing the muscle memory for angle control, it doesn't exclude you from having to learn the basic principles of sharpening.
There is also a trade off between the up-front time required to learn how to freehand (but sharpening individual knives is very fast once you get good) vs much less learning curve for a guided system (but sharpening each knife is slow).
>>32478829
I'm fine with going slow. I realize that even with a fixed sharpener I have to learn about "forming the burr" and all the other intricacies of sharpening, but I'm hoping like you said, I'll be able to pick it up and actually start getting knives sharp sooner.
>>32475370
standard comm cable, coax/network
So is there any reason to ever use the griptilian over a 940?
>>32479397
If you're doing something that will completely fuck up the knife.
>>32479407
Then theres a better tool for the job, and with benchmades customer service, if its not abuse to the knife this voiding warranty , the 940 is still better
>>32479423
You asked why.
>>32467871
>framelock

Alright so I'm looking to buy an EDC knife and I can't decide between the Spyderco Delica 4 or a Kershaw Ken Onion Blur, I have my likes and dislikes about both but I also wouldn't mind having both either.
Seems a lot of people enjoy the Spyderco a bit more, it has the VG10 steel and seems to just be a generally more popular knife. But I do like how Kershaw is USA made. Also I couldn't really tell what knife OP was holding, looks similar to a Spyderco Delica 4, maybe some slight differences. But what would some of you recommend me between the two knifes I suggested?
Finally a good knife thread without that microtech faggot
That guy has to show us all up with his collection of blades he never uses.
So glad i got him to quit
>>32467493
Feels perfect on both of mine
Lube it maybe
>>32479866
Delica
Not shit steel
>>32479891
Wait a second. YOU made him leave?!
Fuck you faggot, he was the only trip i actually liked
Drop dead
>>32479905
I looked up the steel used on the Kershaw Blur and people still said it was good steel, almost comparable to VG10. They even did cutting tests and other kinds of test, and the results were quite similar.
>>32479891
Hunter is why we can't have nice things
You and SOGfag ruin every thread

>>32479891

>>32479397
Plenty of them.
The 940 is slim and slick (though the G10 in your pic is better), while the Grip lives up to its name. The latter is much more controllable if you're using it as a work knife and have wet or greasy hands.
The Grip offers a variety of blade shapes and deployment methods that the 940 doesn't.
Finally, some may prefer 154CM's ease of sharpening over S30V's edge retention.
>>32479866
Are you the same anon who posted >>32478676 ?
Given the choice I'd take the Delica. I don't really like backlocks or FRN but I hate SpeedSafe, aluminum handles, and shitty liner locks even more. I like US-made stuff too, but I'll happily buy a Japanese product like the Delica.

>>32470372
I like your SAKs, what kind are they?
I have the Hercules model myself, I personally love it since it has a nice set of tools, the screwdrivers saved my bacon once at work. The only gripes I have about it is the material its made from. I'm just nitpicking, but I really like the shinyness of their other swiss army knives.
Should I get another one, not to replace the Hercules but to carry around? I dunno, it would feel like a waste of money to me.
>>32480366
Not the anon you replied to, but my favorite EDC SAK is the Explorer.
It's small and slim enough for dress pants, but has most of the tools you'd need on a daily basis, including scissors and an inline screwdriver instead of the stupid back-mounted one. The only thing I dislike is the magnifier, because it's mostly useless, but at least it doesn't really add much weight.
>>32480399
Nice dubs and thanks for your reply.
I like the way the explorer looks, can the magnifier start fires or is it too little?
>>32479397
Not shit ergos and not shit blade profile. Also not as expensive, considering the Ritter Grip has better steel at lower price than base model 940.
What knife is this? I bought it for 25 at a thrift store. 9in long and a 5in blade. I thought it was an estwing but judging by the brass guard, 4 brass strips, and the non-estwing pommel it's not
>>32480533
pommel
>>32480408
You know, I've never actually tried. It's pretty damn small so I wouldn't bet on it.
I've actually used it for normal stuff a few times, but it was never really critical, more like satisfying curiosity about things.
>>32480476
>Ritter Grip
Speaking of this, the Ritter is being discontinued, in case anybody hasn't heard. Buy one if you want one because they'll be gone soon.
Ritter also confirmed that he'll no longer be working with Benchmade, so it's not that a new model is coming either.
>>32480561

>>32480561

>>32480972
I hope the microtech guy comes back. He's alright in my book.
What do you guys think of this one?
>>32481699
Looks like it would hurt to use without anything other than padded gloves.
Some of you guys may remember me as the Nakamura anon. I just replaced it with a new EDC, a Lionsteel TRE G10. Here's the two together.
>>32482398
And from the other side.
I'm absolutely head over heels for this thing at the moment. The quality is insane, especially considering I got it for little more than half of what I paid for the Nakamura. There's not a flaw to be found in the thing. Every touch surface feels like a well-used bar of soap, the machining is incredible, and I love the design. It's light and the Ti clip actually works. (Thanks to both, I've actually been carrying it around in my pajama pants, which I could never do with the Nakamura.) It has the best factory edge I've ever seen, and shaves my arm hair easily straight out of the box. I'm particularly impressed with the grinding and stonewash work, even under harsh light I can't see a hint of grinding marks, unlike on the Nakamura where they're very obvious.
Unlike earlier versions, it flips very well too. I have to TRY to get it to fail.
All in all I'm blown away. I think the only thing I'd change would be to add some jimping to the spine and flipper tab, but it's not bad at all without them.
By the way, if anybody wants to listen to my autistic knife ramblings, I'm putting up a youtube channel soon. I'll shill it here if anybody's interested. I promise to keep the videos short and on point, too, unlike most knife channels.
Is it true that Ka-bar is now a shit brand, with poor quality knives?
>>32483249
They, like Boker, have licensed their name to certain manufacturers of an Asian persuasion so it's possible to find crappy knives with their name on it but their knives as a whole are still fine, although I think Kabar's gone a little nuts with their pricing. IMO there's no point in buying a standard Kabar when it's only $10 cheaper than a BK7.
My newest addition, it's a pretty great utility tool
>>32480533

Should I get:
>Manix 2
>PM2
>ZT 0620cf
>another Yojimbo 2 and dual-carry like Michael Janich does
Really want the ZT, as I only have one other ZT and no Emerson knives at all. But the price is really up there, and not sure if I like the wait time for shipping on it considering that.

0620cf it is.
>>32485761
I almost feel good that my post convinced you to buy yet another shitty tanto, but I also feel bad because I've boosted tanto sales by 1.
>>32485723
Why the hate for tanto?
>>32485821
Because it looks like crap and serves no purpose in the slightest, it improves literally nothing.
>>32485821
Name one thing that only a tanto can do, or that another knife can't do better.
Half serrated is more useful than tanto.
>>32485863
In my experience a tanto tip seems to penetrate things slightly better, bags of sand, feed ect.
But let's say for the sake of argument that it does nothing better than a drop point. Are there any downsides to a tanto other than more of a challenge to sharpen?
>>32485900
A tanto tip is more obtuse than other knife points. A knife with a more acute point will stab better. What would be easier, poking through a bag of feed with a tent stake or a railroad spike?
>>32485761

Tell your caregiver to stop letting your retarded ass browse and post here.
I say caregiver because I assume you're mentally deficient.
>>32485863
Tight straps on packages. We have moving blankets at work that come wrapped in tarp and heavy duty straps that make zip-ties look like bitch-ties. The strap tends to be on them incredible tight. The tantos secondary tip does a better job of reaching the straps and cutting them without cutting the blankets.
Literally only negative is having to reset the blade on a lansky after sharpening ths primary so you can then sharpen the secondary. If you have a belt system, it should be relatively just as easy.
You guys are an embarassment to this thread.
Gonna bitch about the increased time needed to sharpen a tanto on a lansky or by hand on stone, but I bet more than one of your bitch-asses has a karambit you've never sharpened because you have no clue how to.
Classic knife community retardation that gets us mocked. Way to go, faggots.

>>32486282

>>32486329
Glock is bottom of the barrel
Kabar is medium-low, so is Cold Steel, except their expensive 400$+ range
Smallest knife I own, I love it though
>>32469488
Why not just switch to a small fixed blade?
>>32485900
not that anon but, in alot of cases in non powder metallurgical steels the secondary tanto tip is cut against the grain of the steel, making it not take an edge as well, and also possibly not holding an edge as long , Though thats just what ive read and have no personal experience with tantos
>>32486345
The glock knife is inexpensive but is basically indestructible. Expensive blades do not necessarily match in quality and performance
>>32486378
It doesnt matter if it's shit at cutting and shit for doing anything you would need a knife for.
Also it's incredibly overpriced for what it is and what it costs to armies.
You have a trashy mentality. Like people that defend "muh military surplus" and "muh cheap walmart clothes"
>>32486301
I honestly haven't done much with it besides cut thorns I was caught on whilst hunting, and I have a vid on my IG: UrbanMusashi where I cut at some gallon jugs with it as well. Successfully threw and stuck it on a few occassions. Reviewers have said they could successfully baton with them. Came razor sharp and hasn't failed me yet. It was a solid purchase at the time.
When I bought it, Tsunamis were going for $55-$60 on eBay. I got a sheath made for it for $60 so I only spent about $120 total. Now the Tsunami is discontinued and you can't find them for less than $100...
If you want a quality knife/sheath all in one purchase, I'd go with the Cold Steel Recon tanto if I were buying a tanto today.

Why do you people have threads about sharp metal pieces?
I've got this $3 one thats worked for like over a year. Once it stops working I can rub it on a hard rock or something and it works again. When that doesnt work I can just buy another.
Explain to me why I should spend $50 on one instead of $3?

Hi /kg/
I was thinking about purchasing this one right here.
"Gerber 4.11-in 2-Blade Steel-Stainless Utility Knife"
Anyone have experience with it or anything, I'm not too crazy about the design of it, but overall its mostly what I'm looking for.
And the smaller knife I could give to my kid brother or throw it into my EDC Pack.
What do you guys think?
>>32485701
ZT0450
>>32486217
Folders. Start with the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or 3, easily the sturdiest folders I've ever seen (other than Cold Steel whose folders are horrible carries)
>>32490686
Protip: never buy ANYTHING Gerber. Even the "decent" ones suck in comparison to other options. If you're looking for a cheap but quality carry get a Spyderco Tenacious, CRKT Fossil, or Kershaw Skyline.
>>32490855
Alright, dubs tell the truth so I guess I'll avoid Gerber.
Thanks for that tip, any other guidelines you could throw at me?
>>32490686
I think I wouldn't trust my life on either and thus wouldn't buy them.
While suitable for edc, they're likely to be insufficient as actual weapons. The steel is likely to be of lower quality and will not retain its' edge for very long.
>inb4 telling me you aren't looking for advice on capable weapons on a weapons board
>>32490879
But I am looking for advice!
I have a SAK already but I don't feel too confident with it, meaning if I were to stab really fast or deep I feel like my hand wouldn't stop and I'd cut the fuck out of my hands.
(Not that I would ever get myself in a knife-fight scenario, I know its better to run, but sometimes things just happen)
>>32490686
It's a literal piece of shit. My sister gifted me one before I knew anything about knives. The pivot became loose and there's no way to tighten it or even loosen it, so the blade closes at the slightest touch. Stay away from it.
>>32490864
Serrations are a waste if you keep your knives sharp regularly. Just adds difficulty to sharpening and doesn't give much benefit unless you're cutting bread regularly.
Never buy pull-through sharpeners, y'know like the handheld ones where you pull the blade through to sharpen it quickly? Those *destroy* your blade, fast. Same applies for the electric versions. Get yourself a Lansky system, it looks like a clamp and they're like $40-70 depending on which model and where you buy them, they work insanely well and can teach you how to sharpen easily and for cheap. It'll last a while and sharpen almost any knife.
Another thing to stay away from are gun brand licensed knives, by that I mean Smith & Wesson and Ruger branded knives, some others may be out there I don't know of. They're basically cheapos that are licensed by well known gun makers, total sham.
Also if it doesn't list an actual blade steel (ie a combination of numbers and letters) and just says "stainless steel" or "carbon steel" it is 80% likely to be shit, especially if made in Pakistan.
Old brands like KA-BAR, Gerber, Buck, Case, etc are all a little behind the times and even though Buck and KA-BAR still make quality knives, there are better options out there. I highly recommend Spyderco, they have a wide range of knives from budget to high end and the majority of them are great value for the money. Benchmade can be good but their quality control is horrible and their materials midrange, mostly overpriced due to the warranty, I tend to avoid them. Don't ever buy a Microtech. If you want to stay cheap, Kershaw and CRKT make some good ones mostly in the lower price range, just do your research and decide on a model that fits you. I do recommend spending a decent amount on a good knife just so you have something to rely on. It's like the difference between a Glock and a Sig Sauer, Glock makes good quality for cheap and Sig makes expensive guns that are justified because they're so damn good
>>32490897
The sad truth is, most folders, particularly liner lock and frame lock knives in general, aren't built for a fight. The problem lies with the possibility of the lock disengaging mid-fight and closing on your fingers.
The best locks from the tests I've watched appear to be: back lock, triad lock, compression, ball-bearing, axis, or arc lock. Liner/frame locks can make the cut if there is a swedge on the lock/blade to prevent slipping/disengagement, if the framelock is relatively thick, and of course, the stop pin and pivot needs to be capable of withstanding a minimum of 150lbs of force, but preferably 200lbs of force or greater. You may see a knifes' frame lock fail in tests, but don't let that discourage you from them entirely. The argument/theory is that they won't disengage while a firm grip keeps the lock engaged. In shorter words, while liner/frame locks are to generally be avoided, some can be trusted. Research must be done on the particular make/model to be sure.
For example, I own a Zero Tolerance 0452cf. It's a very beautiful knife. Very collectible. But the stop pin is too thin, and it isn't secured by any screws. It also used a thin ball-bearing pivot that you can see the blue plastic rim for while lock is engaged. It's more like pocket jewelry for showing off.
Then there's my Yojimbo 2... It surpassses the ZT Sinkevich models as both an edc and a weapon for half the price. Very similar steel. Similar quality handle materials. Very different knives in terms of overall capabilities.
You should also avoid 440 stainless. 8Cr13mov and similar steels are better options. CTS, CTX, Cruwear, Elmax, AUS-8, VG-10, etc. are some better quality steels to name a few.
Look for a thick stop pin, a blade at least 3in in length, a strong pivot, a solid lock, etc. Being designed by a martial artist can help, but unless it's Janich, Williams, or Thompson, I wouldn't immediately trust it without some form of proof the knife can perform as they claim.
sup guise. any thoughts on the piranha miniguard? Seems like a good little auto knife for edc.
>>32491182
Goddamnit I thought SOGfag was gone.
The Yojimbo is $120 and the ZT0450 is $160, only $40 more and is made of a similar steel with full ti handles. It is thinner both in width and thickness and is lighter than the Yojimbo with a thinner blade, making it a more versatile EDC except for the weapon factor. If your primary concern is a weapon then you should carry a Cold Steel Espada Large, a 4" fixed blade, or god forbid, A HANDGUN. Most folders are not designed to be weapons and as such should not be used that way. Even folders designed to be weapons will most likely not be very effective at it or as an EDC tool.
I will agree on avoiding cheap steels, mostly 8cr13mov (or similar), 440A/B/C, 420HC, AUS-8, CTS-BD1 or ATS-34. Mid range steels like VG-10, S30V/S35VN, H1, ZDP-189, etc. are miles better.
>>32491235
Wouldn't touch Piranha with a 10 foot pole. Autos are novelty knives. If you want a good cheap auto get a Protech Sprint or Kershaw Launch 4, but don't expect easy 1 hand operation, reliability, or durability out of them. If you want any of those 3 qualities, or all of them at the same time, get a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or Benchmade Griptilian in D2.

Alright, so I've got the corner of an oak desk, some horse butt for a strop (unless you recommend something else?), what micron of CBN emulsion would be best for me, in use with tasks relative to cutting bunches of cardboard. If it makes any sort of difference, the steel will range from 1095 carbon steel all the way to CPM M4, S110v or ZDP-189
>>32480989

>>32491401

>>32491434
Just as good as the full size, just depends on which size you like better. There's a 154CM Grip, a D2 Grip, and a CPM-20CV Grip. Also KnifeWorks . com has Doug Ritter RSK MK1's (both full size and mini) which are basically Griptilians in M390, that's the one I would get because it's just slightly more expensive than the regular and less expensive than the 20CV. Get them while you can because they're getting discontinued.
>>32491809
What ammo do you need? I highly recommend getting into handloading. Saves a shit ton of money if you use the right stuff. Lee makes a Classic Turret Press for like $100 and some cheap accessories and supplies and you can put out about 200 rounds per hour.

>>32495519
There are no advantages to the design aside from being able to play with it.
Nothing wrong with that. I get more use out of my knives as toys to get rid of nervous energy than tools for cutting.
Page 9 bump
>>32495264
Yes, on one side. What good is one screw side.
Sup? Just got this in the mail
>>32495548
This is is not true at all. The balisong design precludes the possibility of the knife accidentally closing on your fingers. It's stronger than any folder lock and would require actual breakage of the knife to fail.
>>32497676
Yes because balisongs are known for how strong and safe they are. Maybe you can print that sales pitch off on a pamphlet that you can keep in the breast pocket of your trenchcoat, so when you clack open your balisong to cut the wrapper off your McGriddle and people give you funny looks, you can hand them out like a Latter Day Saint spreading the gospel.

Guys, I fell for the Zero Tolerance meme. This fucking thing came mostly centered, but too tight to open, so in order to allow it to spring open, the pivot screw needs to be loosened until it's almost touching the liner. I sent it in to ZT and 4 weeks later, it came back to me and all they did was tighten it back to the point where it couldn't open, didn't bother doing anything else. 2/10. Pretty disappointed.
>>32499889
Which model did you get? Could have been a fluke. Return it to the place you boughtit from. I recommend the ZT0450. Will definitely make you change your mind.
>>32499966
I got a ZT0566BW. I just picked it up on Amazon from my suggested list since it had such good reviews, but they won't take it back anymore since it's past their 30 day return period... And that's because ZT took 4 weeks to send my knife back to me after doing diddly shit to fix it.
The one I bought for my boss is flawless, opens nice and smooth, razor sharp.
Honestly, I can understand a bad product slipping through the cracks, but when they don't care enough to even fix it when it's clearly defective, that's some real shit. They can have the best product in the world, but if their customer service is that bad, they've lost my business for good.
I hope the paramilitary 3 comes out in a nicer colour.
>>32500041

>>32500157
I took it apart completely on Thursday, cleaned all the surfaces, then applied a nice coat of oil to all the moving areas, still garbage. The speedsafe bar was packed with an absurd amount of grease that I mostly cleaned out, I left a thinner coat in there. I'd say it's slightly better, but I'd take my old Kershaw Blur over this thing any day.
>>32500157
>>32500254
My next course of action is to take a polishing agent to the inside and try to further reduce friction and maybe take a little material off the right side of the blade around the pivot.
>>32500272
Have you played with the screws on either side of the pivot?
>>32500333
I have, I've tried adjusting everything I can think of. I even tried loosening all the frame screws to try and shift the frame slightly to push the blade to the other side with no luck. If I tighten the screws around the pivot to center the blade, it squeezes it too tight to even open. If I loosen the blade to allow the spring to open it enough to engage the frame lock, then my blade is almost touching the liner. I'm about ready to just put this in my backpack as my backup camping knife and just buy something else.
I used to carry my Buck 110 in it's pouch on my belt. But I realized that belt buckle was made out of weird shitty metal that gave my belly a nasty rash. So now I need a belt. Are you allergic to nickel? Almost all hardware is nickel plated. Look on Etsy for a good maker who uses stainless steel buckles and hardware. It'll cost a bit more, but it's worth it. A good, 10oz+ double shoulder leather belt made out of pre-dyed, vegetable tanned leather. Gun belts are fairly thick and might not be comfortable if you're just clipping a knife to it. I could make you one, but I'm in Canada and shipping would probably be shit if you're in the states.

Buck is really behind the times as far as steel and designs. The 110 may be a classic but it's made of shitty 420HC and has a lower lockback. You could just get a regular folder and take the clip off. Or you could use the clip like a normal person and find out that it's much better than you think it is. You have a fear of better options.
>>32502428

Has this fact hindered Benchmade in any way from selling as many hilariously overpriced fixed blade knives (in steels totally in appropriate for the intended scope of work, no less) as they want?
It's not going to stop them from selling as many of those balisongs as they want, either

I don't get all the midtech hate lately.
I mean, sure, you're stupid to think that they're actually better than a good production knife, but they still let you have something a bit more "special" than one, and often let you get a design you really like but can't get the custom. They also often have finishes and machining processes etc. that are impractical on production knives.
Sure, they're frivolous pocket jewelry, but what's so bad about that? Pretty much any knife over $200 or so is a luxury item.
What's a good bowie? I'm thinking the Cold steel Frontier or svord von what the fuck ever.

Just found Case makes a USMC style Bowie in a carbon steel. Available on Zippo for $75.

Just came here to post this. This honestly doesn't surprise me. But it's for the same reason that people buy Sebenzas or Microtech's, like the Tachyon 3. They think it's nice and have the money and somehow better than other things at lower prices. Anyone that buys a Sebenza over a Zero Tolerance 0450 is obviously a retard and they're the same kind of people that would buy this.

It will definitely stop the experienced balisong community from buying them. But fuck Benchmade either way.

I did want to buy the 51 because I can get it less than $200 new is it worth it?
>>32509332
Oh look it's the guy who incessantly shills the 0450
Has it occurred to you that maybe some people just don't want a flipper? And when you get into that price range it becomes extremely subjective. I don't own a Sebenza, I don't plan to, but I find the simplistic looks of a plain Jane Sebenza to be outstanding. Pretty much all ZT knives are just too tactical looking for me.

How much do you want to spend?
>>32509524
Not worth $200 new, no. Get it used or on sale for $150 or less.

I'll agree on the "tactical" looks on most ZT's, the 0450 and the 0220 are the only ones I really like the looks of. But still, there are other options for a ti framelock without a flipper that don't involve spending upwards of $300. The 0450 to me is just the best all around carry for a really good price, and yeah that is subjective but like I said there's other options. The Spyderco Techno, Slysz, and SpydieChef are all good manual ti framelocks with the same (or better) steel than a Sebenza at $100-200 cheaper. I just think it's retarded to pay that much money for something not as practical as a cheaper option. That said, the Mnandi is a damn sexy knife. And you gotta admit what Benchmade is doing with the latest bali is a rip.
