Why is it that the world's biggest Empire had such incapable military equipment? Like seriously, It annoys me whenever I see how basic British soldiers were during WW2 in comparison to Germans and Americans. A salad bowel helmet, Seriously?
>>
>>32465089
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
>>
>>32465089
> incapable
More than capable enough to kill you.
>>
>>32465089
Incapable?

Most of their stuff may have looked weird or just plain shitty (like their uniforms), but it all worked, and that was enough.
>>
>>32465089
Because it turns out that good training and logistics are better than having nice looking guns are uniforms
>>
>>32465089
Why do you think they lost their empire so fast?
>>
>>32465137
>>32465112
>>32465134
>>32465141
Alright, maybe not incapable, but still. Surely they should have had better quality equipment and uniforms considering they owned like 1/4th of the planet
>>
>>32465089
They didnt expect another world war, most of their infantry/army were designed for colonization
>>
their army was only good for shooting pajeets who stepped out of line
>>
>>32465185
What was wrong with their equipment exactly? Their tanks were obsolete, but everything else served its purpose well.
>>
>>32465089
the "salad bowl helmet" was good for protecting from falling shrapnel, which is what it was designed for. A steel pot isn't going to stop a .30 caliber bullet no matter what shape it is

One of the (if not THE) most important factors in a protracted war, especially a protracted world war across continents, is logistics. British equipment and kit may have appeared outdated, but if it can be manufactured faster in more places across the Empire and shipped efficiently to the front in a standardized fashion, that is going to be more effective than more specialized kit that is resource/labor intensive and served by vulnerable supply/manufacturing lines
>>
>>32465089
>>32465280
And besides, I'm not sure where you're getting that it was even incapable or obsolete. It doesn't look as cool as a stahlhelm and splinter camo but it was more modern and refined kit than they had been equipped with during the great war
>>
>>32465089
The helmets were good enough for the job they did, considering they were designed to protect from shapnel falling down on them.

British paratroopers had good kit though, round helmets, denison smocks and body armour, that was still being used up until the 70's.

they had good equipment too, good optics, fur centurian waistcoats, leather body warmers, putties.

Before you complain that the european theatre uniforms look bad:
the cotton is so that its warm even when wet, adds to warmth in winter, and can be taken off and only be warn with shirt in summer.

The odd dimensions of the trousers and shirt (both high cuts) are to ensure the least amount of cotton is used.

>>32465185
I don't think you understand, how the british empire worked. there was no unified military so uniforms differed.

Canadian and australian uniforms were pretty practical and started being issued to the british army as of 1943.

The armies of the british empire in 1939 was the largest all (mostly) volunteer force in the history of mankind.

so equipping an armies was not easy, including hundreds of thousands of volunteers and conscripts, the home guard were given spears and arm bands it was that bad.

What gets me is you hear americans say :"my grandfather served in ww2" in britain everyone's grandfathers served in ww2, and your the odd one out or an immigrant otherwise.

britains economy was solely focused to the war and had in effect practising total war since dunkirk.
>>
>>32465253
Their tanks seem to have been good ideas late to the party. The Cromwell was built for the big wide open african front. now here it is in the hedgerows of france. Centurion is going to lay the foundation of Tanks for years to come....shows up just after the war ended.
>>
>>32465341
everybody seems to forget comet & challenger...

the Matilda was good, as was the valentine.

the early war cruisers were good too, until you sent them to sandy places
>>
inb4 hugo boss meme
>>
I don't know what you're talking about, it's aesthetic as fuck
>>
>>32465371
> sandy places
they did well against Italy. Thoroughly outmatched against Pz IV tho'
>>
>>32465371
The comet is just a better Cromwell. though it got to stretch it's legs in a more open area.

The Matilda and Valentine could smash Panzer 3s, problem was some dingus thought giving them high explosive rounds impedes on the job of the artillery blowing stuff up so the only way they could remove a bunker of field gun was to actually shoot the people in the bunker or on the field gun, which is a helluva lot harder than it sounds.
>>
>>32465227
Exactly this. The Royal Navy from the time of the Spanish Armada until WW2 was the most powerful Naval force in the world. Their army was a tool to subjugate technologically inferior peoples. I believe that it was Erich Von Falkenhayn in WW1 who said if the British army landed, he would send the police to arrest them.
>>
>>32465089
Germany had been effectively disarmed and in the 1930's had to rearm themselves so of course they did it with the best they can get at the time. Add on top of that, one of the biggest arms manufacturers exist within its borders.

The US for the first time since the civil war just happened to be on the forefront of arms technology in WW2. Add on that the US is and was an economic power house who has not had its industry ever attacked by anything but itself (yay civil war).

The UK has always been kinda of a budget empire and was only really focused on the British isles instead of the rest of the empire. This lead to colonial officers being ignored when they would claim about equipment or tactical shortfalls. They were fighting savages and forgot or never knew the proper way of fighting a war. This lead to the British always lagging behind.

But this wasn't just the British, most European countries had a hard time trusting their colonial officers and accepting new ideas.

you will never be this ally.

Driving gloves in a GP with beards and shit.

I remember reading that when the Germans and italians approached them they would speak jibberish and they would be passed off as arabs

I was trying to be polite.

In all fairness, England was just the most successful at it. The rest of Europe tried to strip every possible resource they could get out of the rest of the world too.

100% false. ever hear the phrase "cotton kills" when talking about cold whether ops?

As I enlisted in the 1960s, there was a lot of equipment of WW2 vintage. Some of it was even from the Great War, but most of that had been phased out. For Borneo tours we usually got US and French jungle boots where we could, as they were much lighter and more practical than what we had.

That said, over the years I realised that a lot of militaries have very imbalanced kit on issue. They'll have premier units, which they show off to the outside world, but the bulk of the forces will be using things that aren't just old - but often plain dangerous or broken. There was none of that in the British Army, everything that we did have (regardless of age) functioned well and was looked after by people who knew what they were doing. Even the worst British armouries and stores that I've seen were in far better shape than many of the top end ones I've seen around the world.

>an empire of scrooges
>made India not a total shithole regardless of what currynigs say
>modernised Africa for the time being but then watched as Africans ruined it
>taught and educated both

Last I checked we werent Spain or Belgium. We taught the natives how to not be primitives and destroyed the ENTIRE caste system in India which allowed a social revolution that is now back to being a caste system because of the guys living there who are taught Britain did EVERYTHING bad and nothing good because lolIndia.

Most African nations that maintained their education worship Brits and their colonialism because they KNOW that the populations at the time were subhuman retards and that having a swift kick up the ass is what they needed.

Look at the Congo and the ex-Belgian colonies and compare them to British ones. Same in South America as well with how much more successful the British colonies were until they went socialism.

British imperialism was the greatest evil and greatest facilitator of modernisation the 3rd world has ever or will ever see.
