Massad Ayoob has discussed the .45 having it's place in defensive carry, particularly in cold weather environments where theoretically the increased clothing worn by an attacker and their constricted blood flow will result in less effect on target by a 9mm bullet. Probably not a pronounced effect but it's perhaps worth consideration.

Regardless, Massad Ayoob is a much better source for CC information, especially if you're looking at cartridges and philosophy over what exact gun.

He isn't saying the .45 Auto is bad, he's saying that there are better rounds out there and I don't disagree. .45 Auto is a perfectly capable round, but the kinetic energy dumped into the target is similar between 9mm, .40 and .45 when using all hollowpoints. When using ball ammo, .45 is a slower slug and will dump more kinetic energy than a 9mm that has the potential to pass through and that's wasted energy. A .45 will make someone just as dead as others but in a gun with generally lower capacity. Personally, I carry 16 rounds of 9mm because I'm not banking on a CNS or heart shot to stop someone and want to poke as many holes as possible to drop blood pressure as quickly is possible. Anyone who says .45 isn't capable is an idiot, just the same as anyone who says 9mm isn't effective is an idiot. If you like carrying a 1911 in .45, more ppwer to you.

Its actually a beautiful slide of cost. The .45 super is a bit faster, a bit heavier, a bit flatter shooting, has a bit more energy, and costs about a dollar more for 20 rounds.

If a person owns a .45 pistol, and is concered about being "obsolete", They can rock it on over to .45 super or .450 SMC and it makes for a damn fine carry round.

Got me 100 rounds of .45 super XTP 230 grains for my 1911. Im sure the high power and big bore makes it superior to many handguns. Most of the extra power in these rounds is not going to be manifested on the target as much as it will through barriers and soft armor.
