Hey /k/ what is the best lever gun I can get for sub $500?
What caliber should I get that will optimize the potential of the lever action?

.45-70
Any model 92 clone is the top of lever design in pistol calibers.

Marlin 336 in 30-30 is a great choice, as long as it's either a new one or one from before Remington bought the company.
I'd go either .45lc or .44mag

>New one
How new should it be? Within the last year or so? I've heard varying accusations and acclaim on marlin's quality.

This
Rossi 92s are great, rough out of the box but a few hours sanding and polishing and it's a great rifle.
I chose a Rossi ranch hand in 45 colt, guy I bought it from was a gunsmith and he did some good custom work to it, and I'm taking it to my gunsmith tomorrow for more custom work. Great brush gun for us Canadians where you can't carry a handgat innawoods

And I have some hot loaded rounds that excel my dads 44 mag, and can be as powerful as light .454 rounds. Get 44 mag if you reload and get 45 colt if you reload but you don't have to because buffalo bore makes great ammunition that are bear stoppers
