What is /k/'s opinion on the Gewehr 98 and descendants/copies of it like the Wz.29, Kar98az etc.? I've got a Gewehr 98 with the postwar sight and absolutely love it, though 8mm is a real pain in the ass to get. Pic related, it's a rifle of the same type as mine.

They are better than meme-nagant but they use rarer ammo.
Long Mauser is best Mauser. Plus I love the Model 98 because of how widely it was adopted as a service rifle.
True dat. I'm lucky to have a postwar Belgian-made Mauser chambered in 30-06 too, so that's better if I just want to go plinking. Though if you're not extremely picky, you can get 8mm for pretty cheap.
8x57 IS is not that rare
It isn't ultra-rare, no, but sometimes it can be a little bit of a pain to find at a decent price. As long as you're using a bolt-action, I've found that Turk ammo gives you the most bang for your buck, quite literally considered it's pretty damn hot ammo.

The only good surplus I've tried is Yugo/Serb surplus; I've gotten mixed results on Turk and Ecuadorian surplus.
Yugo or Romanian surplus is good stuff, snatch it up anytime I can. I try to stay away from the new steel-cased noncorrosive stuff, I've had a few jams with it.
Bumping for more Mausers.
>>32446650
>though 8mm is a real pain in the ass to get
Reload.
Also it's a pretty good rifle for what it is.
>>32446650
Turkish mausers are the best non-german mausers. fact.
The factories in turkey were even supervised by the head honchos from mauser.
>>32448305
Goddamn that is a thing of beauty. Swiss Guards are already badass, Mausers only make them more so.
>>32448370
Probably going to start doing that soon desu, though surplus serves my needs for now.
>>32448383
I've heard good things about Turkish mausers, only complaints I've heard are about the post-WWII ammunition being pretty hot-loaded and being unsafe in semis. Like I said, I use a Gewehr 98, so it's fine. Pretty cheap at local gun shows.
>>32446650
>Most rifle ever
I mean, there's nothing more that can be said.
>>32449213
Ayup.
>>32448383
What is Sweden
>>32448472
>Swiss Guards are already badass, Mausers only make them more so.
They still have at least some of those rifles, too. 200 were ordered in 1908, and they are chambered for the original 7.9x57mmI Patronen-88 cartridge. They served until 1953, when they were replaced by the Swiss K31. Probably the rarest Mausers in the world.
>>32448472
>I've heard good things about Turkish mausers
He's probably having you on m8. Turk Mausers are OK but most saw lots of use and they look it.
>>32448383
Lol. Let's conveniently disregard Karl Gustafs gevarsfaktori
>>32448305
I have one of these Danzig 1918 and a ce44 K98k. I really enjoy them.
I really want a g98, but I just can't figure out how to dish out 1 or 1.5k for a rifle that will get shot once a month
Should I get a Gew98 or USP9? Both are in good shape and around the $550 mark. USP has $250 in jetfunnel stuff tho
>>32452257
which one has gotten progressively more valuable as time goes on and is not being made anymore?
>>32452274
That is my reasoning too, I'll get more use out of the USP but the Gew will be my baby
>>32446650
That's called a Kar 98b long Mauser is best mauser
>>32451716
I wonder why more WW2 guys didn't have K98az, they are basically identical, what did they do with the ones they had in storage?
I only have a Swedish one.
What do you guys think of these?
>>32452408
No it's not. Kar.98b requires a bent bolt handle and side-mounted sling. It's just a Gew.98 otherwise, even with the S/42 rear sight. Collectors call the Gew.98M (M for "Modernized) to differentiate them, but the Germans did not give them a special designation.
>>32446928
if you want your rifle to blow up, sure
>>32452471
>if you want your rifle to blow up, sure
>tfw none of your rifles have blown up
What am I doing wrong?
>>32452257
if it is in good shape, and not bubba'd $550 is a very good deal on the mauser and the USP will still be available and is not going to go up in price it may in fact drop over the next couple of years.
Bumping for more long Mausers.
I totally lucked out and got an original 1896 south african republic republic Boer War issued Mauser brought back by a Canadian Boer War vet, one of the rarest long mausers!
>>32455144
That's really cool.
>>32452471
Semi-autos will go kaboom for sure, but bolt action Mausers are 100% safe to use with Turk surplus ammo. I have a Yugo Mauser which has chugged at least 1,000 Turk rounds without a trace of any harm to it.
>people actually fall for the "Turk surplus is bad" meme
I bet you also think Tula is evil because it's "dirty".
More Gew.98s?
