do we have a timeframe for this even?

Alien and Aliens was seperated by like 70 years. If this is between the two, maybe they dont have Pulse Rifles invented yet?
>>
>>32436003
Incredibly lazy design work to include entirely unmodified and easily recognizable things like ACOGs and eotechs on AR frames. In Aliens the work put into transforming the weapons to be mostly unrecognizable was quite impressive.

This is lazier than the AR pistol in the new Star Wars.

Something I don't understand is how so much work went into creating weapons like the pulse rifle and smartgun for Aliens, and they weren't even the centerpoint of the film. Just the tools the marines used but so much craft and care was put into making them unique and interesting.

Now armourers think it's fine to slap a stupid handguard onto an AR-15.

No, Blomkamp was going to do a sequel to Aliens with Ripley and Hicks that disregards the events of Alien 3 and Resurrection. It was going to have tacticool Pulse Rifles
It was cancelled in favor of this, which is a direct sequel to Prometheus
>>
>>32436003
>visit alien planet
>wear no environmental suit
>tactical Canada hat
>track suit and motocross boots
>no spare mags, no plate, no comms, no kits

>>
>>32436899
>It was cancelled in favor of this, which is a direct sequel to Prometheus

>Make movie in universe that everyone loves, or keep flogging the dead horse that was Prometheus
>>
>>32436857
Every single part of a good production only adds to the quality of the finished product. As of late, there's been a sharp decline in actual passion for the project in Hollywood. It's only gonna get rarer and rarer for careful detail to be put into secondary and tertiary elements in films. I believe the logic is something along the lines of being lazy is also cheap and that it was never their job to appeal to weapon enthusiasts anyways.

>TL;DR: Standardized production has damn near killed sexy weapon design in movies
>>
>>32436884
It's nit picky, but those are background clutter. You might notice unmodified background guns like that on a rewatch or in still photos, but you don't really pick up on it in the movie. In the movie, you mainly see the stuff with prop work put into it. It's admittedly an oversight, but very minor and quick in a single shot of the film.

In Covenant, it's clear the front and center "hero guns" are just ARs. Really lazy. It's a prequel, so pulse guns don't make sense, but the armorers on the set should really work to make their props transformational. Also, having optics all over the place on guns is a bad move for a prequel since it will glaringly be different from the irons-only guns in 'ALIENS'. Things like that really need to be a bit more uniform to keep 'ALIENS' from getting zee-rust problems.
>>
>>32436916
I guess

Why hire a man who's going to put lots of time and effort into creating something unique just for the one film when you can go to the hollywood armoury and get whatevers on the shelf.
>>
>>32436312
>mankind has mastered space travel
>still use AR's
Lazy
>>
>>32436914
Prometheus was a visually-striking pile of crap. If you watch it on mute, it's fairly good
>>
>>32436901
The premise is they are fighting off liberal aliens from the US who are running because of Trump
>>
>>32436901
>visit alien planet
>wear no environmental suit
And in the trailer it's clear they are being infected by stuff in the air of the planet.

LAZY.

I hate the writing convention of having characters take off protective gear just so the plot can advance. At least in 'ALIEN', the facehugger just went right through the poor guy's helmet and he never had a chance.
>>
>>32436923
I miss my kick-ass sci-fi shit that isn't just AR with some shit on it. It pains me that the problem has crossed into everything from TV, cartoons, and vidya. Even when they do decide to be somewhat creative it's just generic space gun with glow parts all the time now. fucking kill me.

Okay why was the Alien movie cancelled? Like the real reason.
>>
>>32437009
Because Blomkamp had two poorly made bomb movies in a row. All the wunderkid goodwill he earned from 'District 9' was used up.
>>
>>32436977
well Oblivion had really good design in general, so not really a wonder...
>>
>>32437009
Apparently it's not cancelled, but delayed with priority given to Covenant
>“Fox asked us to delay so Ridley could shoot his [second] Prometheus movie. That was too bad because we would have already done it by now. Now that we’re waiting for that, I have a couple of Avatars to do and Neill has The Gone World, so we’ll have to see what happens when we get back, when those projects are over.”
>Indeed, Blomkamp became attached to an adaptation of the Thomas Sweterlitsch sci-fi novel The Gone World in the wake of his Alien movie being delayed, and it’s unclear when that plans to shoot. Regardless, he was certainly eager to make the Alien film (especially in the wake of the disaster that was Chappie) and Weaver seems incredibly game, so this could still happen—assuming it doesn’t further encroach on Ridley Scott’s plans.

Hell they even had a fancy precursor to the M41A that was supposedly carried by Prometheus but never used in the movie. The Weyland Corporation Storm Rifle existed in 2024. Could have just banged together props of those things instead of AR-15's.

Because they actually gave a shit back then. Pick up a copy of the USMC Technical Manual. Used to be worth big moneuy but they reprinted it when Prometheus came out. It's thicc and creates and explains lore for things in the movie that 95% of the people who watched it don't even think twice about. that attention to detail comes together to create something with actual weight though instead of some hack in a movie armory reaching for ar #2

Jurassic Park made far more sense than Jurassic World. I can get a crazy jolly old man just wanting to make dinosaurs, but Jurassic World was
>Last Park the dinosaurs escaped because the electric fences went offline
>So let's just not make the fences electric at all, but have a tiny tracking beacon in the dinosaur that can electrocute them
>It wont electrocute it if it leaves it's enclosure, though, only if it goes near another dinosaur's enclosure

>Let's train some raptors to work in the military. It worked for dogs, why wouldn't it work for every other animal?
>Wow there's claw marks in it's enclosure and we can't find it, wonder if it got out, better go into the enclosure to look at the claw marks super duper close for some reason without hearing from the guys who can track it
>I served two tours but let me aim my M134 slightly behind the giant dinosaur and trail it instead of aiming ahead
>We can't kill the dino and need to use non-lethal weaponry. It's bigger than a T. rex, so some fucking ZAP BATTONS AND NET GUNS SHOULD DO THE TRICK OF... SUBDUING IT?!?
>We have these see through hamster ball things that CHILDREN CAN PILOT THEMSELVES AROUND HUNDRED TON ANIMALS. I doubt they'll play bumper cars with an Apatosaurus or roll into dino shit and smear shit all over the ball and the rails it gets back on

This has always been a 'problem' with sci-fi future weapons.

It happened with the P90.

Now that there's so many cheaply available and extremely customizable AR-15s on the market, it's the easy choice for movie armorers to go for.

Top barrel was some sort of launcher, which the second trigger actuated once the action was cock and locked.

>>32442693
There's no real evidence as to how powerful the laser weapons are though. We never see them use them.

The Spaec Muhreens use explosive munitions which when used against most living things, tends to do more damage than a burn.

Also the Laser pistols were made from Swiss submachine guns and random parts, not BB guns.

>Three sequels
>Four spin-offs
>Fifty-seven comic series
>Twenty four novels
>Fourty-seven video games including arcade machines
>Most recognizable movie monster in history

The Alien franchise is the fucking definition of "getting off the ground".
>>
>>32440091
Lower production values and high cost of movie tickets is probably why Hollywood can barely keep people in theaters
>>
>>32442904
>sadly Aliens didn't really get off the ground because the not so subtle penis vagina aliens kinda turned people away.

What the shit are you talking about? Alien is one of the most well known and popular horror movies ever made.

Am I the only one who would love to see standalone alien movies based off of the Colonial Marines fighting rebel colonists? I know it will probably never happen, but there are not enough scifi movies that deal with a future human race that doesn't involve some sort of alien species. This is part of the reason I love the Killzone series. The first half of Killzone 2 contains some of my favourite moments ever in a video game.

is that a thompson?

Why is it so hard for propmakers to come up with original weapons designs in the age of 3D printing? They could design any original weapon and not have to base it off of another platform like they did in the past.

because propmakers are hands-on people who like sculpting stuff. 3D printing is basically all CAD design (i.e. computer drawing), which I can imagine artistic people finding very boring.
>>
>>32443518
Can't they just draw concept designs or make scultures and then give it to some autist to blueprint out and print? Sort of like an architect working with an engineer?
>>
>>32443528
I guess they could but that would take a lot more time and money than just buying some AR bodies and letting the prop guys graft on some shiny bits.

That M83 soundtrack too. It was the best part of the film.

>do we have a timeframe for this even?

It's in the Prometheus timeframe, which is near future. No pulse rifles yet.
>>
>>32436899
They've always been two different IPs. Prometheus 2 was set for 2017 and aliens 5 for 2018. Stop being a retard.

Well Prometheus is set in 76 years time
Alien is set in 105 years time
Aliens is set in 162 years time

This film is apparently set before Prometheus so it may be that its just not actually set very far in the future so it doesn't make sense for a pulse rifle to exist yet
>>
>>32445991
If I'm not mistaken they actually bump into the characters left over from the Prometheus Expedition so it's sometime in the gap between Prometheus and Alien. Hell on the website made for Prometheus they feature the Storm Rifle which is obviously a predecessor of the M41A and it's supposed to have been in service since 2024. This is just a case of lazy ass prop guys.

But will the space axe return? Apparently they're colonists, so the weapons should be a mix of new and older designs that they would have brought along. I hope it's more than just ARs and AUGs, it'd be nice to see a PKD blaster or a sawed off Browning 2000. The lack of a flame thrower in the trailer is worrisome, though. All except 3 had one, even resurrection and Prometheus.
>>
>>32441415
The stupid mistakes were in abundance. Which is sort of why Chris Pratt's character made the movie- he was the only character who acknowledged the sheer volume of idiocy at any point in time, so the audience could connect with him.
>>
>>32436003
>on an alien planet that thwy know very little about
>ever going outside not wearing a multi layer suit or even a fucking helmet for that matter
They fucking asked for it and the whatever corporation (wayland right?) is fucking retarded
>>
>>32436003
At over a century in the future, it's unrealistic for them not to wear Crysis Nanosuits and command hundreds-strong drone swarms that do the real fighting.

I like the 1970s American military + 2010s British upper-class aesthetic tho.
>>
>>32436003
This movie series gets even more retarded with every movie and its infuriating because its just scott being a hack and creating scenarios in which no human with a will to live would ever subject themselves to.
>>
>>32446506
>>32446559
I wish there was a character who would refuse to leave the ship without a suit only to be called paranoid all the time. Meanwhile the rest of the crew would keep doing stupid shit and wondering why bad things are happening.
>>
>>32446244
Yeah i suppose , just saying its not very far in the future.
However it is like soldiers today using an MP40, must be out of place.

>>32446251
I would be surprised if a flamethrower didn't appear on the ship, looks more like its going to be an expedition though , can't speak for the other upcoming aliens movie-maybe there?

>>32446506
You see they have spacesuits in the trailer as well
>>
>>32446752
Here's hoping if they didn't bring flamethrowers they could make some like in the first one, but I dunno if they're going to be smart enough desu.
>>

Because it's too involved to hire a mechanical engineer to craft a mechanically functioning and reliable device and then deal with whatever gun laws the nation you're shooting in will throw your way when you can rent Magpul-blinged ARs or Tapco-fucked AKs and be good with most of your audience.

i'm not sure if i want a movie with Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn as they look right now, unless they CGI them with half the fucking budget.
>>
>>32448780
So basically, what we've done to the M16
>>
>>32441415
I could accept most of that, Just shrug it off as plot.
But the point that made me just give up on the movie was when they had their DINO SWAT guys, all rock out in cars, with tasers and tranq rifles....
You know what would've been 100% safer, Quicker, More efficient?
1 helicopter with 1 guy with a tranq rifle.
I don't understand why they didn't even have a helicopter for Medical Purposes,
if someone gets injured on the other side of the island what the fuck would they do?
They could have had Ultimate Beast dinosaur throw something and take out the helicopter, and i would've sat back in my chair and grinned at the stupid movie like an idiot.

Dino escapes, You need to get eyes on it, Fly helicopter up. Monitor it while it runs around. Shoot it with sedatives, Or stick a giant cattle prod out the window and zap it to move it a different direction.

It was just DUMB.
>>
>>32447283
Fuck i kek'd too hard.

I loved these guys in the first movie.
They probably were just told to ad-lib their lines and that they just wanted more cash.
>>
>>32436899
It wasn't canceled. It was shelved in favor of this - depending on how this one does, they may move forward. I'm expecting them too, actually.
>>
>>32444805

Right my bad.

Unless we had a whole past high civilization that crashed down to stone age levels like in Halo.

In which case perhaps Eugene Stoner came across some pre-historical cutting edge relic of an AR15 lower in the ruins of an African Jungle held in the hand of some ancient astronaut.
