Mine, a 4in Official Police, $430.

an ideal first revolver is a medium frame .357 Magnum with a 4" barrel and adjustable sights, made by S&W or Ruger. here's why:
.357 is powerful but manageable, great for self defense.
.357 Magnum revolvers can also chamber and shoot the cheaper and even more abundant .38 Special ammunition.
a 4" barrel is well balanced in the hand and gives much better ballistics and sight radius than a snubnose, and is still easy to carry IWB, OWB, or in a horizontal or vertical shoulder rig.
a medium sized frame will soak up the recoil well, without being heavy to carry.
adjustable sights have a good sight picture. fixed sights on revolvers are usually very minimalist.
S&W and Ruger are the best quality to price value, and they're easy to find new or used.

look for a S&W Model 19, 66, 586, or 686, or a Ruger Security Six or GP100

that said, if you are literally restricted to owning one revolver, best to splurge and get a Janz and multiple caliber conversions.

.357 magnum. GP-100 or S&W 686 are probably your best bet, though even a single action would be fantastic.

>I ain't fuckin' around, anon
.44 magnum. .44 specials for defense or plinking, .44 magnum for big game and keeping the King of England out of your face. .454 would also be good, though the ammo is expensive and the recoil is fierce, you can shoot .45 colt out of it for most purposes.

>Maximum America
Colt Single Action Army, .45 Colt. 6 shots, more than enough to kill anything that moves. Also, you can go with a .44 special if you want to be a damn aficionado.

You want a 4 or 6 inch .357 magnum by Colt, Smith and Wesson, or Ruger (assuming you don't have thousands to spend on a Korth or Manurhin). A good .357 is an extremely versatile gun that can handle anything from light recoiling .38 special loads up to hot .357s that equal or surpass 10mm in power.

.38 special and .357 are also among the easiest and most worthwhile of the common calibers to reload.

A .38 special load that isn't weak factory target ammo is nothing to laugh at. The old FBI load is competitive with many good 9mm self-defense loads today in power/penetration, assuming identical barrel lengths.

I have a question for you. Do you have any tips for taking out the hammer pin when disassembling the gun? Mine won't budge at all, and I don't want to resort to using a hammer + punches unless there is no other option.
>>
>>32420518
>Colt, Smith and Wesson, or Ruger
if you're including out of production Colts you ought to mention Dan Wesson too.
>>
>>32420767
Your gonna have to lube it but rly it's better just to use a punch if your worried bout scratching cover the tip with a napkin and punch away.

That's how I got it out the first time.
>>
>>32420773
The reason I didn't mention Dan Wesson is that their period of greatness was a comparatively narrow one. The DWA Model 14 is a good gun that looks kind of ugly, and the early DWA Model 15s were excellent. The problem is that the company founder died not long afterwards, and the company itself changed owners and production facilities many times afterwards, with the result that only the Monson-made 15s are actually worth a damn.

Someone who is not aware of all of this and just goes out to buy a Dan Wesson is more likely to end up with one of the ugly and clumsily made early Dan Wessons like the Model 12 or one of the shoddy in-name-only ones from the late 80s or early 90s than he is with one of the really awesome ones from their golden age.
>>
>>32420640
I guess if you're shooting hot magnum loads all the time, but it is a fantastic revolver and perhaps the most balanced ever made.
>>
>>32420820
I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.
>>
>>32420852
I agree that it's a gun with an iconic and completely deserved reputation, and, like you, I much prefer how it balances in the hand compared to all of the full underlug magnums today.

That being said, the Security Six is a better buy for anyone whose interest isn't just collecting. They have similar dimensions to the 19 with none of the durability issues (the Border Patrol adopted it after specifically testing this), and you can find one in great condition for much less than a 19 simply due to the fact that it's made by Ruger rather than Smith and Wesson.

Just a few months, both the -5 with mim parts and the 7-shot model came out in 97. This was the first one I'd ever seen for sale and it's in pretty nice condition, obviously having been shot. The guy at the shop didn't realize what he had and was selling it as a nice used 686+.

A pre-lock 686 7 shot was actually the first gun I ever shot, and the one I learned to shoot on.

I grew up in an anti-fun family that wouldn't let me buy a gun when I got old enough, so I spent $100 on a membership at my local range and got unlimited time and rentals, all I had to pay for was ammo. For some reason or other I decided a big revolver with .38s was the ideal first gun to shoot and the 686 was what they had. I fell in love with the thing and probably put 1000+ rounds through it over the following year.

By the way, I highly recommend doing the range membership thing if you're new to guns and have a well-stocked local range with a similar deal. It's by far the cheapest way to try out a shitload of different guns and learn to shoot well without buying a meme gun you end up hating later on.

Got the chance to fire one at the range a little while ago. It was an underwhelming experience. Not to dump on it too much. It was okay but not the be all and end all of revolvers. To tell the truth my range buddy's 1980's vintage 586 L frame was slicker and a better shooter.

>Revolver thread.
I do have a good question.
I have been eyeing a White Rhino lately, and my local gun shop just so happened to get one in, after a year of waiting one brand spank new one. The issue, its a 40DS, 4 inch barrel 357.

My question is, should I go with "and this can go for any revolver for that matter." The 4 inch barrel, the 5 inch, or the 6 inch? "40DS, 50DS, 60DS."

I have a carry fire arm, this would be more so an "display/range/for fun" fire arm.

My carries are 45sig, and 40 Spring.

I'm actually looking for a manurhin myself. they are basically unobtanium and costs a shit tonne when you find them. but I know a LGS that has a new chapuis one laying around that a guy didnt pick up.

Do you think there is any big difference between the chapuis/matra-manurhin made ones?

chapuis have a 2 year backorder on these guns, so if I miss out on it I'm out for a potential long wait.

another thing is that the gun i can buy is a 6 inch one not 5 1/4 which I'm looking for.

>>32427397
4 is a better do-all length, 6 inch preserves more of the cartridge's potential. I've heard that a 5 inch barrel is actually the perfect length, but I have sadly never handled a good revolver that had one.

Why do you want a Chiappa though? You could buy a toppo-tier old Smith for the price that a LGS demands for a Rhino, which is definitely not on the same level unless you really want that bottom-firing barrel or a Mateba-looking gun.

Most of what I've read about them has been good, although I've seen a few complaints about a rough fit/finish from the factory. You can also consider the 4 inch SP101, which is a nice piece that I know at least one /k/ommando uses as his carry gun, or the LCR if you're not averse to polymer.

Be advised that snubs usually aren't all that fun for shooting .357 with most grips that you would actually want to use for carry. Your dominant hand will feel like someone slammed a trunk door on it at full power after one or two cylinders.
