Yes, and it will never happen.

He just wants Lockheed to come on bended knee just like Boeing did.

POTUS doesn't decide military acquisition. He just commands forces. Sure, he could veto the next defense budget, but that is many months from now.
>>

>POTUS doesn't decide military acquisition
Not normally, but he can push for something if he really wanted to.
>>
>>32414191
No, not in his capacity. Congress makes the budgets, pushed money towards certain acquisitions. POTUS has no control over the military budget except either signing it or vetoing it.
>>
>>32414287
Little more fine grained than that.

POTUS gets to say "If you changed this and this and this, I would not veto it."

Give and take.

But I think the necessary parties have super majority to nullify his veto, so we'll see.

Just to contribute:

Competition is always good, but it's too late in the game now. Shit would've been faster and cheaper if the Pentagon didn't try to screw Lockheed and then get btfo in court, but that's another issue entirely.

Part of how the US does intsec/geopol is absolutely retarded amounts of innovation and sparing little to no expense in warfare development. It's gotten to the point that whether or not it's 9001% overkill for what we'll ask the airframe to do is 100% irrelevant to why we're fucking building it.

Also the tech developed on this thing is fucking cool, and will eventually make it's way down to the civilian world just like every other major military project in history.

>They will kill it.

It’s too late to cancel the the F-35A and C models for the Air Force and Navy but Trump ought to absolutely cancel the even more expensive F-35B for the Marines.

The vertical landing capability is nothing more than meme just as it was for the Harrier, as it so seriously cripples both the range and payload that it’ll only be used for showing off at air shows.

But more importantly; it ain’t the Marines job to be some kinda half-assed Jr.Navy.

Naval airpower must remain the purview Navy and must be based on fully-capable super-carriers, not neutered babbby carriers that also have neutered amphibious capabilities (the entire reason for the Marines…) due to the need to support the F-35B Boondoggle.

If there isn't competition, you start competition. Hence, "I called boeing to come up with a comparable f-18".

Asides the twitter stuff, he is right when it comes to US nuclear capabilities. While the Trident II-D5 is still perfectly capable, the Minuteman-III is getting old and needs to be replaced.

All the US needs is just a simple ICBM that can hold 10 RV's with 4 or 5 of them being nukes (Treaty limitations and stuff) and the rest decoys and jammers.
>>
>>32414287

>>32417634

>>32417745
Minuteman may be old but its still first rate, that and the current iteration will be in service until 2040. I'm just not sure what can be improved with it other than the actual infrastructure for the missiles the computers are pretty old but they will still get the job done. Its just not an expense that is necessary at the current juncture.

The nuke/missile/bomber gap is a tactic that politicians always use, and its normally baseless.
>>
>>32417763
>More A-10s
You'd get maybe 3-6 out of that if Fairchild-Republic still existed and built them.
>>
>>32417792

>I'm just not sure what can be improved with it other than the actual infrastructure for the missiles the computers are pretty old but they will still get the job done.

Well, you can improve raw throwing-weight, range, CEP ,reduce the weight of the missile itself and make it even more reliable.

Introducing things like advanced decoys and jammers will give a decent first step into designing missiles that can breach ABM systems.

>Minuteman may be old but its still first rate, that and the current iteration will be in service until 2040.

Thats a rather optimistic length of expected service for such an old missile. Also, keeping a missile that long in service brings a new problem into the equation as i will explain later.

>Its just not an expense that is necessary at the current juncture.

An ICBM doesnt have to be that expensive and it is quite necessary because if you wait too long with designing and building new missiles, all the knowledge of ICBM R&D will be lost as the engineers who have worked on the Minutemans and Tridents will have retired or gone to other lines of work and thus you will lose industrial momentum which will make designing, developing, researching and building new missiles a whole lot more expensive.
>>
Are there hypersonic nukes?
>>
>>32417911
Minuteman may be old but it still holds up remarkably well, I also think better decoys could be developed at an acceptable cost.

Also, the ICBM program has lost inertia, almost no one developed completely new ICBMs after the Cold War except the Russians and they only did it because they literally had to or be left with a totally obsolete stockpile. Unfortunately there really is no inertia, but the program should be restarted for looking for new designs in around ten years. A new arms race would really wreck our budget, and really no one can actually afford a nuclear arms race right now.

>>32418152
All nukes are technically hyper sonic considering they re-enter at many times the speed of sound.

Much better RCS aspect than the regular F-15 frontally but still worse than both F-22/35.

F-15SE would end up being more expensive than the most expensive F-35 variant (~$100million). The silent eagle was supposed to be an alternative export aircraft for countries that couldn't afford or maintain F-35's, unfortunately it wasn't cheap enough so the project has more or less been shelved with one prototype built.
