I just got a 1938 Russian Capture Kar98k, and I have spent the last full day just trying to get the barrel to get any cleaner. I've let it soak in solvent bore cleaner for hours, then I put in a clean rag and it came out clean. I've tried to pour really hot water down the barrel, with the same lack of any result. As I put oiled rags down, they also come out clean (after maybe 50 or so oiled strips). Is the barrel just a lost cause in terms of getting it up to a mirror-like shine? I got my 1938 nugget with a similarly dirty bore, yet I've managed to get it to a literal mirror shine inside, why can't I do the same to this?
Any suggestions? tips?
pic related is the bore as of right now.
>>32411071
its clean, the dark is just from minor pitting. maybe you can use a brass brush to scrub it a bit but in order to get a mirror shine you will need to polish the surface somehow
Took my Vz.98 to the range this morning. It did not split the barrel. Great success.
please excuse the silly question, but I've been told by a veteran who now collects milsurp that brushes are fairly gimmicky, and that you can achieve with a simple rag and oil what you can with a brush as long as you're not lazy. How would the brush benifit me here?
>>32411205
Is there any difference between a gew.98 and a vz.98 apart from markings?
>>32411248
>Is there any difference between a gew.98 and a vz.98 apart from markings?
The only difference in how the Czechs made them is that the Vz.98 stock doesn't have grasping grooves like a wartime Gew.98 stock does.

Stake it, or get a front sight blade with a larger dovetail.

Do this: cut off a finger of a Nitrile or latex exam glove, and rubber band it onto the muzzle. Put the gun muzzle down, and flood the bore with Hoppes #9. Let it sit for a couple of days. Drain it and then clean it.

If you want to 'reset' a bore to pretty much bare steel, you need a brass/bronze brush, and multiple cleaners. Something like:
> Wet patch with Breakfree CLP / G96 gun treatment
> Brush 20x full strokes
> Patch until dry
> Fill bore with Gunslick foaming bore cleaner
> wait 20 minutes or so
> Patch until dry
> Wet patch with M-Pro 7 cleaner
> Brush 20x times
> Patch until dry
> Repeat process until bore no longer improves. Run and oil patch through bore and go drink a beer.
This process takes a long time, but each cleaner works a little bit differently, and removes a different fouling component (CLP for powder residue, Gunslick for copper, M-Pro to help loosen hard carbon / all of the above).
Shooters Choice / Kroil is a good choice too, instead of the CLP. You might not need the foaming bore cleaner if you use that particular combination.
>>32411216
Fuddlore, guy is a dumbass. A lot of fouling in these guns isn't going to come out without a metal brush, you got multiple layers of copper and powder fouling that layered up, possibly over decades. Think a sandwich of copper, corrosive powder residue, and more copper underneath it.

I dunno, that's just what it's used for. Maybe it's less likely to snag or something.
My goal is to own the main rifle of every major nation in ww2 (main 3 axis and main 3 allies, doesn't count if your country got fucked in 2 months). I just started honestly and only have an Enfield and a mosin, my question is should I go ahead and get a k98 or just go ahead and buy a carcano and an arisaka at the same time?
What's a good price to look for a k98 in 7.62 NATO for?

All I know is they don't have chrome lines barrels, is this a deal breaker for this kind of rifle?
>>32417131
Thanks man
>>32411071
That's just how Milsurp rifles are especially the old ones like the Mosin Nagants, K98s, Enfields, etc. Any weapon that's been in service for 50+ years. I several of each and the best I ever got was an M44 with a mirror bright bore from a shop. The rest I've bought were in varying levels of shot out and the cleanest I've ever gotten a bore is a dull grey. As long as it has nicely defines rifling it should shoot fine. Just make sure to clean it every time you shoot corrosive ammo in it and it should last many more years of shooting.
>>32417369
Yugos are fine, but have unlined barrels so clean thoroughly after shooting dirty or surplus ammo
>>32413774
>you mean like to stack several rifles in a pyramid?
That's the idea. Pic related.
>if so, then why not use the traditional stacking peg found on older rifles?
It's probably because it's cheaper and easier to make.
Can someone explain to me wtf moly coated bullets are for? Federal makes 6.5x55 cartridges with coated bullets and they were the only ones I found at my LGS so I bought them. Now that I'm reading online about them they sound questionable as fuck. I shot like 10 of them to sight in my M96 and they shot fine, but I'm worried that I fucked up by shooting them at all.
>>32418672
It's just a molybdenum coating over the bullet that target shooters use to get a little more accuracy. However. If you shoot moly bullets and copper interchangeably then you'll run into accuracy problems because moly and copper fouling don't play nicely together
>>32418769
But they're safe to shoot? I don't really give a fuck about accuraccy problems but I read about corrosion problems and micro erosion in the throat or some shit that I'm too stupid to understand
>>32418861

I got a 1927 hex dragoon, and while I love it to death, the wood is much less glossy. The finish is flaking off in spots, and some of the blueing is worn off, but I can't bring myself to strip and refinish her.
>>32420036
Prior to this one, the only ones I had handled were either bubba'd, rough gun show leftovers or sold out of a van at the flea market. Needless to say I was feeling the confirmation bias
>>32420050
Yeah, that sounds gross. My first real experience isnwith mine, and while it has some issues, it is very structurally sound and well built, so I haven't had an issue with it. If you are buying common, not really WWII correct examples, then it doesn't matter really. You can buy them easily. If you are buying as correct of examples as possible (hard to find and expensive), do LOTS of research and buy whatever is the best example you com across on your to-buy list first. And then eventually you'll have gotten them all

Cool. I don't have one, but don't really want one either since they weren't used much at all in WWII.
I saw an 1895 Chilean Mauser the other day for a decent price, but it was rechambered by the Chilean military to 7.62x51. Looking online at how they rechambered them (not re-barreled), I'm a bit unsure about the safety of the change:
http://dutchman.rebooty.com/1895Chile.html
If I bought the rifle, what exactly could I do with it, other than keep it as a display piece?

Fucking hate looking for guns so much. I had to overpay on my model 19 because I'm never buying a used revolver online and it took like 2 years to find one.
We need to have a milsurp meet up sometime.
>>32422228

You could try lapping the bore, but it's a very laborious process with a lot of potential for bore damage depending on the methods used.
>>32429904
All depends on what kind of Turk you get. They're generally in rough condition, or weren't particularly well-assembled when they were rebuilt, but sometimes even 90 years of neglect can't tarnish a real jem, like this Czech/Turkish Vz.98/22 for instance.
Yugos are usually found in better condition tho.

Didn't some US military branch use the Savage 24 as a pilot's survival over/under?

Keep the gas to the minimal setting that it can reliably cycle the particular surplus ammo which you are using. Don't use anything that's not 147-148 grain (DO NOT USE HEAVY BALL AMMO [more than 148 grain, ie. 198 grain]), and don't use anything that's not surplus. In addition to this, make sure you do a particularly thorough job of cleaning the gas system components, take them apart, as soon as you can after shooting it, as it is the most vulnerable and rust-prone component.
my ideal gas setting is 1.3

is that a 1941 tula? mine's a 1942 tula
I just acquired a yugo sks not very long ago, fresh out of the box. Cleaned it well, it's a great rifle. I love it. We used to have a yugo before we traded it off for a shotgun (back when they were so cheap) and ended up somehow with an extra receiver cover.
My buddy I take to the range with me sometimes, he can't see so well with just the irons so he can't really shoot anything past about 50 or 100 meters. Since I've got a spare receiver cover laying around, it occurred to me that maybe there would be a way to mount a scope on it.
My question is how difficult would it be to take a PU-style scope and mount it to this extra receiver cover? What all would need to be done? I know that I would probably have to drill and tap the receiver cover. How difficult would this be? Would a scope mounted like this keep its sighting at all? Would a PU scope be decent at all for this?
>>32438986
Yes, it is a 41 Tula.
>>32438825
You can absolutely use heavy ball safely in a SVT.
>>32439220
>You can absolutely use heavy ball safely in a SVT.
I've always been recommended against it and have been too loving of my svt to prove the myth, besides that, cheap russian surplus 54r has never failed me, so I've never been bothered with it.
>>32412041
really whats an easy ass weld if you find someone thats good at tig welding. (i wouldn't slop mig all over it but that seems to be what alot of people do) but to anyone doing something like this does it have to be re heat treated or what? i imagine welding it changes the receiver strength.
>>32421663
awesome i have one to. bought it and 300 rounds of 30.06 and a bunch of clips and cloth bandoliers for 400 bucks cause a guy at work was getting a divorce.

I see a contradiction.
Seriously though it's fine. I generally use 150gr bullets but I've used 174 and 203gr as well with no issues.
>>32439203
It won't be accurate. The dust cover will move during recoil. Your buddy just needs to learn how to shoot properly.

I don't mind shooting corrosive ammo through it because I immediately go about cleaning it very thoroughly, which I actually enjoy.
Under my care, my tokarev is very clean, cozy, and comfy, don't you worry.
>>32439646
It doesn't seem like there's that much room for it to move though. Is this something I could fix with shimming?

Eh, I shoot corrosive all the time. Normal cleaning with Hoppes and all good. I don't see the hate with corrosive. Take 2 seconds extra and hit everything with windex if you must. I think it's lazy fucks really

Thinking about buying this BARS Gorka 4 suit and the hat to go with it.
Is it comfortable?
Can the front (not on the brim) of the hat be patched?
Can the sleeve be patched?
Anything else I should know?

oh is this thread for milsurp rifles only?
>Saw an FR-7 in excellent condition the other day for $300

I thought it was an FR-8 at first which really got me excited
>>32443574
FR-8 is also chambered in 7.62 CETME tho. But it does have the large ring. I would have passed on that FR-7, too.
I like my FR-8. It's my general use woods rifle.
>>32443383
It's just a repaired "duffle cut" that came loose.
>>32443574
>>32443622
Neither are chambered in 7.62 CETME. Read the god damn Spanish manual on them. Furthermore, 7.62 CETME is a lower recoiling round, not a lower pressure round. Pressures are virtually identical.

Also, be careful about keeping your brushes and cleaning rods clean. You're not doing your rifling any good by scratching it up with carbon bits embedded in a stainless steel rod, or stuck in the bristles of a brass brush.
>>32444207
Using a muzzle guide helps a LOT with not wearing out the rifling when cleaning the bore.

Local guy for $60. It doesn't match the rifle but is from the same letter block.

1927 m91 izhevsk all numbers match really nice bore, bluing is perfect, stock finish was in poor shape so stripped it found all kinds of cool stamping and such that was covered up waterfalls the wood put a teething layers of all weather poly, now it can go on my week long camps and I wont have to worry about the wood getting messed up. When did sight hoods start getting introduced? It seems like it wasn't until the 1930's that newer Mausers started having them.
>>32450446
Czechs used a spring-steel sight hood on the Vz.23. IIRC FN carbines made for Mexico between the wars had a similar sight hood.

Because the idiots that spread that don't understand basic chemistry. Jesus Christ, the salts are just hygroscopic. Just pour water down the barrel and they leave with the water.
>>32453760
It does react with the sulfur salts from blackpowder and was useful to remove the cupro-nickel fouling from Krag and early 30-06 loads.
I got a crappy, bubba'd, can't hit anything that isn't within 15 feet type 53. Someone put JB Weld on the barrel. Here it is with my M24/47 and AR.
