They are not practical in any environment, forever.
>>
>>32407792
In a zero g environment they would be practical, maybe, probably not. Now if you cut all the weight out and give it some kung-fu action grip that thing will lift boxes like nobodys business.

if you got some crazy ass shit like in them vidieer gamez you kids play now a day then yeah you could fuck shit up hardcore

they are theoretically better than tanks in cityscapes. You can bust through houses and buildings, take cover against air attacks and infantry, and has more versatile weaponry
>>
Until we can build highly mobile ones that are better than regular armor in a parte or be efficient enough to justify itself, no
>>
all of you are faggots, mechas are always practical, forever
>>
>>32407853
Every fucking week with this garbage. No, they are not more practical than tanks ever.

>can bust through buildings
Tanks already do this quite well.

>can take cover from air attacks
Nigga what? Do techs have the ability to burrow underground? Hiding in a building (which we just established a tank could do) does not provide any protection from bombing or strafing.

>take cover from infantry
Tanks are vehicles designed to engage infantry and vehicles without the need for cover.

The only argument you can try is mountain terrain and even that's hard to argue.

Mecha are more mobile than tanks though.

No.
Isn't that also the same universe where they found some "plot particle" to make mechs even remotely feasible?

Some of them can even fly.

What about innaspace?
>>
>>32408217
If you're fighting a war in an environment where you need life support you've already lost.
>>
>>32408217
Arms maybe but whats the point in having legs in space? Kinda pointless IMO. Realistically anything short of a specialized spacecraft or remote weapons platform would be pretty useless especially considering most combat would probably occur at ultra long range.

>Heavyarms

Litterally dakka. Have you ever wonder what would happen if ammo racks were accurately depicted in gundam? VOOOOM.
>>
>>32408033
What is weight distribution? Shit won't be like your Chinese cartoons.
>>
>>32408217
Meh. Space warfare would probably be minimalist weapons platforms lobbing tungsten rods and nukes at each other over thousands of kilometers. I see no benefit to arms or legs or a head. Or even pilots, really.
>>
>>32408309
Better cancel all sub programs

Being in the water won't kill you, you have a chance. In space you have little chance.

The reason that mechs are featured in movies and anime are twofold: first (and most importantly), they look cool. However, they're also extremely versatile from a director's perspective because you can put a mech pilot in many different scenarios. For example, Gundam and Code Geass both take advantage of this by having battles on land, in the air, and in space. Additionally, the mechs can perform hand-to-hand, melee, and ranged combat.

However, we know that the real world requires a dedicated instrument to maximize the ability to do a specific activity. If there were such a thing as a multi-purpose mech that could do all of the things that they do in anime, there would also exist dedicated tanks, aircraft, and spacecraft that could wreck them because of their specialization.

My point is that mechs are cool, but that's about it. Frankly, no vehicle had an advantage in an urban environment because they generally compromise situational awareness for the sake of added protection. Infantry continues to be the Queen of Battle, in part, because urban operations keep it relevant. Mechs would suffer the same kinds of problems that tanks do, but they would also be more vulnerable. Power armor, on the other hand, may provide additional firepower and protection without compromising situational awareness and the ability to fit through doorways.

TL;DR Mechs aren't a viable concept in real life, but power armor may one day be useful in urban operations.

No, because you'll be featherweight to be able to move

No, because you're the tallest fucking thing in the street

>and has more versatile weaponry

No, because you have less space and weight for weapons

basically this. read a very interesting article some years ago discussing how space combat will likely be similar to sub combat in the sense that "if you poke a hole in your enemy, you win." Star Trek-esque full-broadside passes are quite ridiculous
>>
>>32408663
Gotta disagree with you on that. Compartmentalised ships in space wouldn't operate like subs. The crush pressure wouldn't be exerted on a starship. Yes decompression would be a bitch, but what if you locked down your compartments and donned some mlsort of pressure suit when going battle ready? Something like flash gear on a surface combatant but able to survive the vacuum of space. Then you would be able to suffer a hull breech and continue operations
>>
Would the possibility of genetically created gigantic surrogate bodies in armor be feasable?
>>
>>32409495

Why would you think giant meat puppets would work better than giant machines?

Maybe on other planets. Sans atmosphere. But not and any planet with infantry or against vehicles with high mobility.

Not yet anyway...

Only if material sciences make alloys super strong, light, and cheap. Then "maybe". At that point we've probably hit post scarcity anyway and war is a moot point anyhow.

As of right now or the near future? Fuck no.

What advantages does a humanoid tank have over a conventional unit, if any?
>>

This can't be stressed enough. Pilots are the weakest link in vehicular current design. Once AI gets off the ground the only human interaction will be command RTSing hundreds of units for whatever purpose.

I can't imagine having a multi-ton multipedal robot try to walk up the side of a building with windows and shit is going to work anywhere near as well in real life as it does in a vidja game where the building is an invulnerable rectangular prism with textures.
>>
Why is it people always try to argue large multi ton mechs like gundum while ignoring borderline power armor like votoms

M8 if someone has stacked some nice neat boxes in your path it's either an ambush or a video game puzzle.

Anything powerful enough to flip a fucking tank has caused serious damage to the vehicle or crew and it's time to call for a recovery crew.

Holy hell. It actually made me fucking sick that anyone would even try to do it. I did work in the fuckin congo and I didn't see shit half as sick as that. That's straight up fuckin worse than killing humanity. That's sending all of humanity to fuckin hell because you wanted to see your cruel wife who was in hell again. Jaysus.
