Hey /k

Just met guy at outdoor range who had nothing but wood stock conversions. He let me try his AR-15 in with Wallnut stock. It's 35° and he asked me to take off my gloves. The wood seemed warm and comfy compared to my standard polymer stocks. Is there any reason/drawbacks to wood stock conversions?

Only drawbacks are price, weatherproofing, and scratch resistance.
>>
>>32407533
Only downside is it rots in jungle environments.

And weight if your one of those bitch numales
>>
The reason is looks, weight distribution changes, and raw sex appeal.

The main con is it needs more care and maintenance than plastic and can be heavy.
>>
>>32407533
The cost involved is a drawback.
I imagine they also weigh more, which isn't going to really give you much benefit as .223 recoil is already negligible.
Probably also less durable, but that's not a real big concern for range queen rifles.

Makes you want to cry when you damage the wood

He did warm the seat up for you.

>price, weatherproofing, and scratch resistance.
These. I appreciate some nice wood but the with the whole living in a rain forest thing I try to go with synthetics rather than stress about it.

>>32407569
>>32407572
>>32407577
The wight seemed same, so although might be different it was utterly negligible. Only wood stock I own is a PSL Dragunov. But shit if some extra coin and a bit or buffing is all I have to contend with I might wood stock everything I own.
>>
>>32407635
Scratches are a non issue. They practically turn invisible when oiled. Unlike plastic it can also be repaired with expert use of epoxy and sawdust
>>
>>32407533
I love wood guns, but I live innadesert. If you live innahumidity it might be different for you. That pic makes me actually want an AR, which I seldom do.
>>
>>32407635
The waterproofing is the bigger deal for me.
I put wood on everything I can, but I put polymer on anything I am going to actually use for home defense/hunting/concealed carry.
>>
>>32407739
I'm not sure I buy the whole weather and scratch meme. I've had the Dragunov for 5ys and have friends with wood stock AK's for years. It does not seem likely wood stocks just fall apart on you after a decade of hard use (shitty weather considered).

It shouldn't provided the wood is nicely finished and it's kept dry.

Muhhh dick

They're expensive, get scratched, and are pretty heavy. All things considered though, the aesthetic they provide make it totally worth it

All these retards saying wood doesn't like humidity or water, is difficult to maintenance etc etc know nothing. I have a Winchester M95 made in 1916 in my gun safe, and it has the original wood furniture on it, which means it's 100 years old wood and it's still fine. I also have a Winchester M94 and a Suhl SxS shotgun from the '60's, with original wood, still in perfectly fine condition. So what's all that ranting about?

Fuck you guys. I start talking about how metal and wood look the best on guns and you call me a fudd. You sit here and put wood on your AR's and I hear nothing about it.

YOU'RE ALL CLOSET FUDDS

They're memeing pretty hard about scratches, as if plastic is immune. But wood doesn't like humidity. Proven fact by every military inna jungle.
>>
>>32407816
If you finish it well and keep moisture off of it, it will be fine.
However go camping for a few days in the south and you will understand how hard that can be, keep a gun on your boat and watch how fast you suddenly start caring about things like finish and sealing.
When I am hiking around or stalking a deer the last thing I want to have to worry about is dinging up my nice wood stock.
>>
>>32408053
It's not that plastic is immune, it's that scratching a nice wood stock sucks a lot more than scratching a piece of injection molded plastic.
>>
>>32407569

You know, it almost seems like the AR-15 platform was designed with wood in mind. It just looks right.
>>
>>32407569
>>32407533
pointlessly heavy
>>
>>32408949
The point is it wont crack easily even if abused. That means you can club a mofo without breaking. The point is it protects the rifle far better than thin walled plastic from damage and is actually repairable rather than replaced.

Stop buying into the plastic marketing. They exist because its a compromise between cost, durability, and manufacturing needs.

Militaries like it because they cost nothing to make and can be shat out of a mold while being stupid proof for maintenance.

They will always be a sacrifice for durability. Unless you're inna jungle

i just got my set today from woodforAR, its is walnut and so fucking beautiful, and its not much heavier than any polymer I have felt, was also not that much more expensive than and quality polymer or aluminum furniture sets, WAY cheaper than most rails, the kit had grip handguard and stock 200 delivered. going to install tomorrow but I am very impressed so far
