Speed doesn't equal penetration of ballistic capability.

Have you ever watched the Myth busters shoot a pool with a 50 bmg? The bullet explodes and flies apart into completely non lethal shards after ~3 feet of water. Yet slower bullets like hand gun cartridges are lethal much further down yet have magnitudes less kinetic energy.

Penetration is determined by the following
-Material you're shooting at
-Material of your round
-Penetrating cross section of your bullet
-Drag cross section of your bullet
-Mass
-Drag inside medium you have shot at
-compression and deformation of tyhe round (Determined by material A and Material B as well as both cross sections of the round)
-And lastly kinetic energy, which is partially determined by speed as well as mass

Remember the faster something's going the more it "wants" to slow down, or rather drag coefficients are much higher in air as well as in the material you're shooting at.

To say simply
Speed kills armor
Is a bastardization of people's simple understanding of this equation
Ek (kinetic energy) = 1/2m V^2
Velocity per whole number value plays a much larger role in Kinetic energy, compare a 1kg projectile moving at 10m/s compared to a 10kg projectile moving at 1m/s.

1/2(1) (10^2) = 0.5*100 = 50 J
1/2(10) (1^2) = 5*1 = 5J

But "more Joules" still isn't ability to penetrate materials.
A solid 50kg lead projectile moving at ~500 m/s (~Mach 1.3 ish but heavy as fuck) will have nowhere near the penetrating ability of a 10kg DU projectile moving at 400m/s (Hardly sonic, and 5 times lighter), especially if the cross section of the DU projectile is much smaller than the lead projectile. Imagine a long rod penetrator vs a classical AP shell.
