My grandfather left me his Browning Hi Power shortly before he passed. It was in pristine shape with a nice deep blue. Not thinking much of it I stored it in the bilge area of my boat in a soft case. It got wet over the years and fast forward 11 years, I remembered it and when I opened the case it is covered in light surface rust. Are there any good methods of removing the rust so I can get down to that beautiful blue finish? I tried a vinegar soak but it didn't help much. I don't want to sand but will if I need to.
blast it with piss

This job probably requires a bit more, but I've found that when dealing with light surface rust, a potato of all things is actually really useful. It contains a small amount of phosphoric acid and acts as a very mild abrasive, which is perfect for removing a small amount of rust without damaging the finish. Just cut it in half and scrub the metal with the inside, or alternatively if you're dealing with a blade, just stab it into the potato and let it sit for a bit. It sounds retarded, but it works.
For you, anything with phosphoric acid in it will do the job. Naval jelly is particularly effective, but it will strip the blueing as well. That said, it looks like the rust is severe enough that the finish is already pretty damaged. Even with the rust gone, you'll still have some pretty major pitting to deal with, so going for a full refinish might not be a bad idea.

thanks ill give those a try. the worst thing is my grandma asked to see the gun last week and I had to ignore her calls, so Id like to clean it up a bit before showing hert. It was her husbands pride and joy.
See if it works by loading it with ammo, pointing it at yourself and pulling the trigger.
Not like Hi Powers are worth much but

No, i seriously love old fucked looking guns that function. I bought a star model b that was from 1947 that looked like a burnt piece of bacon. I mean this thing sat in the ground for at least 10 years of its life, the sear was completely fucked, the trigger assemble was fucked. I was gonna fix it up and keep it, but my friend ended up buying it back.

>anon would like to buy a crawfish-shit infested rusty taurus judge that costs 500 dollars new
atf ur just not pulling my leg
if it makes u feel better I ran the numbers and it's not stolen nor reported in a crime
My brother has used molasses and water to remove rust ,on an old truck panels it took a week or two. It only takes off the rust and will not damage anything else. So if you have the time, it works.
