Yeah, i've met a few and been talking to 2 of them for a while.
One of them was a crazy little Italian, must have been almost 50. Guy was fucking out of his mind and didn't really talk much, but showed me a few of his tatts and said he was a legion para for over 25 years. His arms, legs and torso were full of scars and tattooed parachutes and legion emblems, stuff like that. On his right shoulder he had the tattoo he was most proud of, the name of his first battallion and a Waffen-SS logo. Apparently his first CO was ex-Waffen-SS, like many other officers back then so the whole pack had some kind of SS tradition. Like i said, he seemed pretty old, maybe even older than 50, but we trained Krav Maga together and the guy was a fucking machine. Said he never expected to become the age he was, and that he doesn't plan to become much older. He said one day he'll just say goodbye to his daughter and put his Glock in his mouth. Very impressive guy. I'm pretty sure he killed more people in his life than the whole German army since 1945.

The other one i met was a pretty young Romanian, like 25 years or something. When i told him about the Italian legionaire i met, he had wide eyes and said that that guy was part of what they call the "legendary generation" of the legion, back when they were all tough guys and shit. He himself was in for 2 years "but left because my mom was sick blabla", he said in that case it would be possible to do so, not sure about that tho. But he told me the legion today was very different from the legion 15 years ago, seems like there were a lot of law changes and shit, and now it's just a "normal" french army branch and less SF.

a good friend of mine is in Rojava right now, he said the Kurds treat him like a fucking diamond. In his first weeks at the frontlines, they had 4 HAT ("anti terror units" trained by US SF with decent gear) guys attached to his unit, just to make sure he's safe. After a few weeks he convinced his commander that he can take care of his own and doesn't need babysitters, but wants just to be treated like everyone else. They're extremly welcoming and funny people he said.

For what it's worth, I watched several documentaries about the FFL, in both French and English (so no bias for the people to think it's great or terrible) and there was littlé screaming compared to say, the typical Marines bootcamp.

With that being said, the legion is without a doubt it's own little universe, with it's own rules and laws...

Combat experience, contrary to popular belief, is NOT something that would help you. It is said it is much easier to train an intellectual to be a soldier than the other way around. They choose people with extraordinary abilities such as multilingualism, mechanical, culinary, and other hands on skills. Other than that, they prefer those who come from third world countries over somebody from the west, along with those that are desperate or hopeless than a starstruck young male looking for adventure. Not on any political sense, but rather habib abu bakr from war-torn Syria is less likely to desert than Joe Average from small town Connecticut. Hence why the majority of legionnaires recently are either from Eastern Europe or South America.

A college degree in a useful field will help, along with the ability to speak anything more than French and English. They have a lot more applicants than they do slots so they can afford to be picky. Nowadays the rate is around 1 out 8 - 1 out of 10 men picked to become legionnaires in Aubagne.

Athletic ability AND physique is judged, the French army doctors would often deem applicants unsuitable if they look out of shape.

No. Not at all. Mechanics are from the maintenance branch and are detached to legion units. Cooks are detached from GsBDD, are civilians or at the WORST it's a rotational chore and not a full-time job.

A legionnaire is either an infantryman, a sapper or a cavalryman. All the non-combat jobs are given to old legionnaires or to non-legion personnel.
