I saw that my Gun store had a Gewehr 98 on sale for 250$ and I'm thinking about buying it. I don't know much about the G98 and was wondering if there was any thing I should look out for?
>>32386825
The ammo is fucking retard expensive. Be ready to pay 1.50usd per round once shipping is priced in.
>>32386825
That's a good price for it. Do you have a picture of the receiver?
>>32386861
No, I didn't ask to look at it.
What should I look for?
>>32386963
swastika stamps :)
>>32386825
make sure its not sporterized. check the stock length and make sure it has a bayonet lug and the like
receiver markings are good to know, and does it have the roller coaster sights?
check the bore too
>>32386846
The rifle is $250 ... don't listen to this do.
If it's not sportorized and the barrel is even decent at all, buy it!!!
>>32387026
It does have coaster sights

Manufacturer and date, matching serial numbers, etc. Almost every single part on the Gew.98 was stamped with the last two digits of the serial number, right down to the buttons on the rear sight elevator.

yummy. for $250 i'd buy it as long as the barrel isnt chopped. you could put $100-200 into a new stock/metal bits if the stock was sporterized and you'd still be getting a good deal.
buy that thing and take some pix.
Somewhat related, I just bought an American Krag, sporterized to shit for $400
I'm gonna swap out the stock and sights to try and make it look authentic again.
Did I do good?
>>32387555
>Did I do good?
IDK how badly has it been sporterized? Was the barrel shortened at all? How have the sights been altered?
>>32387562
Don't have any pictures yet because of cuckifornia's 10 day waiting period, but it's in good condition.
It's still in 30-40. Krag and with its original barrel, but it's got some classic 20th century bubba-ing, namely a peephole sight and a beavertail stock

Nice! Do any numbers match?
The "Sterngewehr" or "Star Rifle" were rifles assembled on bare receivers by workshops surrounding the arsenal who made the receiver.

Yes it's all marked "4709"

Any k98 handguard will fit it and early ones look right.
Cleaning rods are out there.
Congrats on the amazing purchase OP
>>32388125
Is this stamped 7,62 at the top of the receiver?
>>32389976
Probably 7,92; the Germans marked the actual groove diameter of the barrel on it, so there's a little variation in the numbers. Tightest I've seen is 7,88.

I have realized that the spring on the take down lever is broken
How fucked am I /K/?
could I just buy a replacement spring and fix it myself, or am I going to need to take it to a gunsmith?
>>32390545
Literally any mauser98 spring will work from any country (sweden, spain, basement america, roach). Its also called the ejector box, its doesn't take anything down, if anything it can be called the bolt release.
fuck me i wish i could get Gew 98's for 250 i'd have enough to field a company
>>32390584
>ejector box
Thanks for correcting my vernacular, I have found a suitable replacement
>>32390545
You just buy a replacement ejector box assembly and tap the old broken spring out from its dovetail slot and replace it with the intact spring. You'll want to keep the ejector box because it's a numbered part.
>>32390800
Thanks I'll keep that in mind
