I remember watching a 1960s Pathe segment filmed aboard HMS Dreadnought(britain's first nuclear attack boat) and they showed the rum ration being given out to the enlisted crew

When attached to the cav they did a spur ride (silver spurs), and asked if I wanted to, but I showed them my gold spurs (combat spurs) and so they said I didn't have to, and made me cadre for it.

Spur rides are a mix between essential job skill tests and a haze fest. Troopers have to do things like land nav, weapon assembly, vehicle identification, and weapons qual, but its all spread out over a ruck march with tactical scenarios along the way. Any cadre member at any time can smoke the shit out of a candidate for any reason, rank doesn't matter. It took the squadron S shops hours to get through my station which was just dis/re-assembly of an M9 and 870.

When I was in the LRS company we had "viking night" where the whole company had to "dress like vikings" for a company dinner. Served big roasts and your only utensil is your field knife, no beverages other than beer or grog can be consumed, and there are feats of strength and wrestling. But that shit always just devolved into straight up fist fights.

I feel like most american military traditions start out real lofty but end up as drinking and undisciplined chaos.
